My invention relates to aventilating system for houses and other buildings 111 which nati 1 air CL. 'rei'its are utilized in producing positive ventilation of rooms in the building.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple, economical, eltlcient ventilatsystem for houses and the like, which will not detract from the outward appear- W ancc thereott, whereby air will be caused to flow positively into rooms to be ventilated and where the same air currents are utilized in causing a flow of exhaust'air from the rooms to the outer air. The apparatus tune l5 ti-ons automatically, irrespective of the direction of the wind.
With the above and other which will appear as the ceeds, my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, which form a part of the specification:
Figure 1 is a horizontal cross-section taken on line 11 of Fig. 2;
is a vertical cross section of a house equipped with my ventilating apparatus;

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a building such as a house having rooms 2 and :3. Intermediate the top and bottom of the root -l provide what I term an air gatherer consisting of a horizontal bottom partition 6 and a top plate 7 the latter tapering downwardly towards the center. A series of radial vertical partitions 8 divide the air gatherer 5 into a plurality of substan tially horizontal chambers 9, which, as clearly shown in Figure 1, converge toward the center. Qhe partition 6 adjacent the center oi the air gatherer is curved downwardly at 10, which is substantially parallel with the portion of the top immediately above.

escription pro- 1 The object of this construction is to give the air current flowing toward the center downward direction. To prevent any eddying or cross current at the inner end of the chamber 9 I provide a series of parallel air direction plates 11, which are substantially parallel to the top 7 and the floor 10 ha inediately above and below.

The same forms no part of the presentinvention, and may be omitted altogether and the air may be passed preferably provided with manually operated valves 18 to regulate the fresh air supply.
. In order to facilitate the movement of the exhaust air and to insure positive llOaV of air current, I provide on the sides of the house, between the ceilings 0t the rooms and the root 4:, a series of louvers22, which are made adjustable, as shown in Figs. 3 and l,
and may be operated by any suitable mechanism, not shown, attached to operating rod 28.
The apparatus functions as follows:
Assuming that there is a slight breeze or current of air coming in the direction indicated by the weather vane 15, shown in Fig.
2, the same will enter air chambers exposed to that direction. it should be noted here that the upper root section 4t above the air gatherer 5 is oil set in regard to the lower root section 4- below the air gatherer 5, so that as the air current strikes the lower root section 4 and is deflected upwardly, it will flow along the root until it strikes the openings of air chambers 9 and then will flow toward the center. ()wing to the construction of the air chambers 9, which are wide at the entrance but gradually converge to ward the center, the velocity of the air current is increased as the air moves inwardly. The air is given a downward direction, due
to the downward curvature at 10 of the air chambers 9 assisted by deflector plates 11, and enters the port 13. The port 13 registers with the said chambers 9 by reason of the position of the weather vane 15 which turns the port 1.3 always in the direction of the 7 wind. The air passes through the air washer ell) and purifier 16, which, however, as stated before, may be omitted, thence through air conduits l7 into the rooms 2 and 3 below. Tl'lG GXlltttlSt air leaves the rooms 2 and 3 through outlet ports 19 into the roof chainber 20, whence the air passes through the exhaust stacks 21 into the atmosphere. The movement or current of air through the root chamber 20 and out through the exhaust stack 21, is assisted by the wind, which passes through theopen louvers 22 and creates a draftthrough .the exhaust stacks 21'. Louvers 22 are adjustable, and the louvers on the sides of the h ouse, not in the direction of the wind, may be closed or partially closed, to produce the proper draft,
It is thus seen that I have constructed an automatic ventilating system which is effective irrespective of the direction of the wind and which produces a positive ventilation of the'rooms of the building, provision being made to accelerate the speed of the air current downwardly and deflect the same downwardly into the rooms of the building, and also means being provided to assist in the exhaust of the said rooms. It should also be noted that the apparatus as installed in the house does not detract from the appearance thereof, the major part of. the apparatus being within the root chamber, which usually is a vacant or waste chamber.
Various changes may be made in the arrangement and construction of parts by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit oi my invention, as claimed.
1 claim: 1. In a ventilating system tor rooms of buildings, comprising the combmation'o'lf a substantially horizontal air gatherer open on all sides and disposed intermediate the top and the bottom of a root of a building, said air gatherer being divided into a series oi radial air chambers, each chamber having its walls converging downwardly and toward the center of said air gatherer, an air conduit leading from the inner ends of said radial air chambers to a room below, a wind controlled valve directing the air from said air chambers to said air conduit, an air exhaust chamber below said air gatherer andan air exhaust port leading from said room to said air exhaust chamber, a series 0t exhaust stacks conveying the air from said air exhaust chamber to the atmosphere, and adjustable louvers in the sides of said air exhaust chamber to regulate the admission oi air from the atmosphere to the said air exhaust chamber.
2. In a ventilating system for rooms of buildings comprising the combination of a horizontal air gatherer open on all sides and disposed intermediate the top and the bottom of a root of a building,said air gathercr being divided into a series of radial air chambershaving means at the inner ends for deflecting the air downwardly, an air conduit for passing the air from the air chamhere to a room below, a wind controlled valve directing the air from said air chambers to said air conduit, an air exhaust chamber below said air gatherer and an exhaust port leading from said room to said air exhaust chamber and an exhaust stack conveying the air from said air exhaust chamber to the atmosphere.
3. in a ventilating system for rooms of buildings comprising the combination of an air gatherer on the roof of a building, said air gatherer being divided into a series of radial air chambers having means to deflect air downwardly, an air conduitcommunieating with said air chambers leading the air into a room below, a wind controlled valve controlling the passage of air from the said air chambers to said air conduit, an air exhaust chamber above said room communicating therewith,a stack conveying air from said exhaust chamber to the atmosphere and controllable means for admitting outside air into said air exhaust chamber to assist'the draft in said exhaust stack.
