FLOOR CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed July 5,
My invention relates to floor securing means for railway cars of the general type described in Pratt United States Pat nt No. 1,498,119 in which the securing means does not pass through the tloor sill.
The object of the present invention is to obviate the use of a clip in the construction above referred to. This I accomplish by using a nut of sufficient size and spacing it from the floor board so that the nut itself comes in contact with the under face of the flange of the sill;
in the accompanying drawings Which illustrate one form of device made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical cross section through a portion of a railway car to which the same is applied; Figure 2 is a detail view of the nut and spacer, the bolt being shown in section; and Figure 3 is a section taken in a different plane from igure l.
5 indicates a center sill of a railway car upon the horizontal flange 6 of which is supported a fioor board 7. Formed in the floor board 7 adjacent to the edge of the flange 6 is a bolt hole to receive the bolt 9 by Which the floor board is secured to the sill. The lower end of the bolt 9 is threaded to receive nut 10. This nutis of considerably greater diameter in relation to the diameter of the bolt than is customary and it is preferably polygonal in shape so as to approximate a dish in form and at the same time present suitable flat faces for the application of a Wrench. ltn order to separate the nut from the floor board a suiiicient distance to enable the edge of the nut to properly contact with the under face of the flange 6, I provide the 1924.. Serial No. 724,28?
upper face of the nut With a central boss 11 surrounding the bolt between the nut and floor board. The end of the bolt 9 is provided With a slot 12 so that it may be spread to form a lock to prevent the accidental loosening of the nut. By this construction I am enabled to dispense with a separate clip and to make use of the nut itself to engage the flange of the sill.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1.. In a device of the class described, the combination Witha floor sill, of a floor board supported thereon, a bolt extending through said board at one side of the sill, and a threaded member on said bolt overlapping the under face of the sill and also bearing on the under face of the floor board.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a floor sill, of a floor board supported thereon, a bolt extending through said board at one side of the sill, and a nut on said bolt, said nut having a pair of upper faces in different planes. one of said faces overlapping the sill and the other cont-acting With the board.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination Witha floor sill, of a floor board support-ed thereon, a bolt extending through said board at one side of the sill, and a nut on said bolt, said nut overlapping the sill and having in its upper side a central boss forming a contact face engaging the board.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this the 2nd day of July, 1924,
STERLING H. CAli IPBELL.
