This invention relates to certain improve ments in velocipedes; and the objectsand nature of the invention will be readily recognized and understood by those skilled in the arts involved in the light of the following explanation and detailed description of the accompanying drawings lllustrating what I at present consider to be the preferred embodiments or mechanical expresm sions of the 1nvent1on from among various other forms, embodiments, combinations and arrangements of which the invention is ca pable within the spirit and scope thereof. More particularly, the present invention is primarily directed to'that'general type of velocipede which is characterized by a passenger and cargo receiving body mounted thereon and carried thereby as an element or part of the general structure of the velocipede, and one of the fundamental and basic objects of the invention is to so design, construct and mount the body of the velocipede as to provide for a maximum of space and wide range of carrying utility therefor, together with a simple and strong construction and mounting thereof on and as an element of the velocipede to provide a resulting general structure and arrangement which is ei licient in operation and use for the various 30 purposes forwhich adapted.
A further object of the invention is to' provide a design and arrangement of velocipede body in which various seating arrangements are possible for passengers in order to meet the varying conditions encountered in use and for the difierent types of passengers which it is desired to carry.
'13 further object of the invention is to provide certain improvements in the design and construction generally of velocipedes of the type having a body mounted thereon, and in the construction and arrangement of operating mechanism therefor, with a view to obtaining maximum strength and rigid ity through the use ofa minimum of parts, and of securing ease of operation in use.

With the foregoing general objects, and certain other objects and results in view, whichotherobjects and results will-be readily apparent to those familiar with this art from the following. explanation, the invention consists in certain novel features in construction and in arrangements and combinations of elements, as will be more fully and particularly referred to and specified hereinafter. a
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters refer 'to corresponding elements throughout'the Fig. 2, is a view partly; in side elevation and partly'in vertical longitudinal sectio through the velocipede of Fig. l.

An embodiment and 'mechanical expression of the principles and various features of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings and described herewith purely by way of example and not of limitation, as applied to and forming a'velocipede of the type having a body mounted thereon and provided with a traction wheel which forms the steering wheel of the vehicle. -However, all features of the invention are not restricted and confined to use with and application in the type of velocipede shown, or to the forms or embodiments disclosed, as certain features of the invention are applicable to various other types of velocipedes and to other vehicles, and are capable of other mechanical expressions to 7 embodying the invention includes a main frame, in the present instance formed of metal tubing, comprising the opposite side longitudinal bars 10, the vertical bars 11 extending upwardly from the forward ends of bars 10 and extended forwardly and converging at their upper ends to. and joined to form the fork 12 centrally of the sidebars.

Preferably, the rear wheels 10 are of the rubber tired bicycle or wire wheel types familiar in this art and mounted on suitable ball or antifriction bearings (not shown) to secure the desired quietv and ease of operation.
V A wheel fork 21, of the usual or any desired and suitable construction is mounted depending downwardly from the frame head 15 and rotatably journaled therein, in the usual manner to permit of turning movement of the wheel fork on a vertical axis. A front wheel 23 providing the traction and steering wheel for the veloeipede is mounted in the fork 21 and is provided with the pedals 26 in the usual manner for rotating or driving the wheel 23. The traction wheel 23 is preferably of the rubber tired bicycle or wire wheel type, and is of greater diameter than the rear wheels of'the velocipede so as to support the velocipede frame in the desired substantially horizontal position. The wheel 23 in mounted operative position is disposed and substantially occupies the space below and defined by the bars 11, fork 12 and forwardly extending bar 14, as will be clear by reference to Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. A cover or top wall 46 is secured over and across the side and forward walls, and is provided with a forward seat forming portion 47 pivotally mounted along the rear edge portion thereof to the cover 46, and provided with a seat 48 on the under side thereof. The-seat portion 47 is swingable upwardly and downwardly on a horizontal axis into position resting and supported on the cover or top wall 46 with the seat 48 in position to receive a passenger (see Fig. 1), and is swingable downwardly and forwardly from this seat providingposition to the position shown in Fig. closing the body and forming a part of the top wall or cover 46. 7
, Railings 49 are provided along opposite sides of the body and in the present example are formed by tubes orrods secured at their rear ends to the vertical rods 17, respectively of the frame and extended upwardly, then. forwardly along the sides of the body, and
downwardly at their forward ends to and secured on the body adjacent the rear end of the hinged seat portion 47 on the velocipede frame depend downwardly a distance below the rear ends of the frame side bars 10, and a rear step 50 is mounted at the lower ends thereof extending rearwardly therefrom and across the frame of the velocipede. The step 50 is pivotally mounted for vertical swinging on a horizontal axis by pivots 51 secured to the opposite inner sides of bars 17, and the 1}} over curbstones or such like, to prevent.

The step 50 further provides a foot support or rest for a passenger seated on the rear end of the vehicle body, as well as forming a platform or support upon which a. passenger can stand while holding onto the railings 49 on the body. V v l A drawer-like member 54 having an open top is slidably mounted within the rear end of the vehicle body, and is normally retracted inposition within the body with the rear end of the member forming the rear end wall 55 for the body. The central portion 56 of, the bottom wall; of the member 54 ;is removable to provide a transverse opening through the bottom wall for a purpose to; beexplained. The drawer member 54- is 'projectable" rearwardly from the ,body to form .an. extension thereof incre'as 'ected position as shown by dotted lines in ig. 2 of the drawings, the section 56 of the bottom wall of member 54 can be removed to leave a space therethrough above the rear step 50, with the rear portion 57 of the bottom wall providing a seat, of which the back is formed by the rear end wall 55 of the member 54:, upon which a passenger can sit with the feet resting and supported upon the rear step 50. 'lVith a child, the step can be swung upwardly to vertical position so the childs feet will reach and can be supported upon the upper edge of the seat, as will be readily understood by reference tocFig. 2 of the accompanying drawings.
lVhile the invention and various features thereof are disclosed and described here-with as embodied in and applied to a vehicle of the velocipede type, it will be readily apparent that certain features thereof are applicable to vehicles generally of the wheeled and other types, and the invention contemplates such use and application, and it is not intended by the illustrated type of vehicle to restrict all features of the invention to use with such type.
The term or expression velocipede appearing in the appended claimsis used in u a broad generic sense to include all types of vehicle Where the same or equivalent conditions are met with and where the construction and combinations set forth are adapted to embodiment in and application to such types.
It is also evident that various changes, variations, substitutions and modifications might be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit my invention to'the exact and specific disclosures hereof.
Desiring to protect my invention in the broadest manner legally possible, what I claimis:
1. In combination, a wheeled frame, a body mounted thereon embodying a bottom, top, and side walls, a member comprising a bottom wall, side and end Walls and an open upper side, slidably mounted within the body and closing the rear end thereof, saidmember having an intermediate transverse section of the bottom wall removable to provide an opening therethrough, and the said member projectable rearwardly from the body with the removable section of the bottom wall removed to form a seat at the rear end of said member.
2. In combination, a wheeled frame, a rear step disposed transversely across said frame a distance therebelow, a body mounted on said frame, a drawer-like member having an open upper side slidably mounted with in the body, said member having an intermediate section of the bottom thereof removable to form an opening therethrough, and said member proj'eotable a distance rearwardly from the body with the removable bottom section removed and the opening formed thereby above said rear step, said member forming a seat'at the outer rear end portion thereof with the bottom opening providing leg space and the rear step forming a foot-support.
3. In combination, a wheeled frame, a
body mounted thereon, a rear step depending below said body, and a seat forming member mounted for retraction within the body and for projection rearwardly therefrom above said step, in projected position of said seat member the rear step forming a foot support for the occupant of said. seat. i. In combination, a wheeled frame. a
bod mounted thereon having a bottom, side and top walls, the forward section of the top wall pivoted along its rear edge to'the remainder of thetop wall and swingable upwardly andv downwardly onto the top wall, a seat mounted on the under side of said pivoted sect-ion and positioned for use with the section in open position, and a seat forming member slidably mounted in the body for projection rearwardly therefrom to provide a rear seat for the body.
5. In combination, a wheeled frame, a body mounted thereon, a step depending below said body and spaced outwardly therefrom, and a seat forming member mounted for retraction within the body and for projection outwardly therefrom above said step, the said step forming a foot support for the occupant of the seat forming mem- Eer in projected position of the said mem Signed at Akron, Ohio, this 21st day of August, 1924.
