EXTENSIBLE LEG.
Application filed October 12, 1921. Serial No. 507,397.
My invention relates to extensible legs and more particularly to extensible legs having a shank adapted to slidably fit within a socket which is formed in the upper and attaching portion of the leg. My invention relates further to an extensible leg as described above and which is adapted to support a weight and to be pivotally mounted on the end of a drawer or other pull-out receptacle to support the end of the receptacle when it is pulled out from the frame in which it slides.
Heretofore in extensible legs there has been no convenient way of registering the holdingmeans in the walls of the socket in the upper. portion of the leg with that part of the shank adapted to engage the holding means. The objects of my invention are to provide an extensible leg in which the holding meansin the walls of a socket in' the upper portion of the leg may be quickly and easily brought into engagement with 'that part of the shank adapted to receive the holding means; to provide an extensible leg having a socket in the upper portion thereof and a shank adapted to slidably fit in said isocket, the socket and the shank being arranged so that the shank cannot turn in the socket and the holding means in the wall of the socket will always be in vertical register with that part of the shank adapted to receive the holding means; to provide an extensible leg having a shank with a part thereof arranged with a plurality of in wardly extending holes formed so that they may be quickly and easily brought into hori- Zontal register `with the holding means in the walls of the socket in which the shank slidably lits; and to provide an extensible leg which is adapted to be pivotally mounted upon a pull-out receptacle so that the leg when not in use may be swung out of engagement with the surface onwhich it rests when said receptacle is pulled out. y
My invention is `fully shown in the accompanying drawings wherein similar letters are used to designate similar parts. Fig. 1 is a view of an extensible leg embodying my invention showing in elevation the arrangement of the parte; Fig. 2 is a view of the upper portion of the leg; Fig. 3 is a View the lower portion adapted to slidably t in the socket in the upperV portion; Fig. 4; is a cross section along the line P-4 in Fig. l;

Referring to the figures it is seen that the extensible leg comprises the upper portion A having the socket B extending upwardly from the lower end thereof. The socket B is, preferably, square in cross section, but 1t may be of any non-c1rcular shape. The Y lower portion of the extensible leg has the shank C adapted to slidably fit the socket B, as shown in Fig.` lf, and arranged on the lower end thereof the foot D, or any other suitable means whereby the leg will be prevented from injuring the surface upon which it rests. A. part of the shank, C is arranged with a plurality of inwardly extending rholes E, as shown in Figs. l and 4, which, as shown, preferably have their walls for a greater portion of their lengtharranged at substantially right angles to the side of the shank and have the outer ends of their lwalls arranged with the bevels E. As shown in the figures the holes E are spacedso that the bevel E of one hole substantially meets the bevels E of the adjacent holes, for the purpose hereinafter described. The front wall of the socket B is provided with the block F and is arranged with a hole extending through said block and the wall of the socket B, the hole being threaded to receive the substantially cylindrical ybolt G. The
.upper end of the upper portion A is arranged with the shoulders H, as shown in Figs. .l and 2, which have therein the oppositely disposedholes J. The extensible leg may be mounted in any way; but in the figures it is shown as pivotally mounted on a drawer or `other pullout receptacle, and therefore the plate K having the projecting lug L is adapted to be; fastened to the bottom of the drawer or other pull-out receptacle, as shown in Fig. 7, whereby a pin passing through the oppositel disposedholes J in the shoulders H and trough the boletn the lug L will pivotally attach the extensible leg to pullaout 'receptacleI Aa it is usually lui) legs are swung up underneath the receptacle,
as shown in Fig. 7. The button O, -or any other means suitable t0 the purpose, is provided to hold the. legs and the strip N in place underneath the receptacle. When the legs are` allowedy to swing downwardly into engagement with the surface upon which the frame rests the upper sides of the shoulders H come in contact with the plate K, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, and the legs are prevented from swinging further out-wardly from the frame holding the receptacle then to a'right angle with the bottom thereof. vWhen the legs are in the position last named, the shank C is moved in the socket B until the foot D is upon the floor or other surface upon which the frame rests, and the bolt Grv is turned in the threaded hole in the bloc F until it entersy one of the holes E and thereby maintains the shank C in determined position. in the socket B. Since the socket B and the shank C adapted to fit therein, are non-circular'in cross section, the shank cannot rotate in the socket, and therefore the end of the bolt G will always be in vertical register with the holes E, The holes E are provided at their outer ends with the bevels E so that it will be easy to bring the holes inthe shank C horizontally in register with the bolt G1, and since the bevels E of adjacent holes substantially meet, as described above, when the bolt is screwed in it will strike the bevel E" of one of the holes and will move the shank until. the hole registers with the bolt Gr so that the bolt G canbe made to enter the hole. The inner end' of the bolt G may also be beveled thereby aiding to bring the bolt and the holes E in register. Then the extensible leg is adjustedi to the proper length, the bolt Gr is turned through the block F far enough so Y t that the side of the shank C opposite said bolt is'forced into engagement with the oppositely disposed wall 0f the socket B, as shown in Fig. 4, and the shank is thereby rigidly held in the socket. Since the bolt Gr is substantially cylindrical and the walls of each of the holes E. are for a greater portion of their length at substantially right angles tothe side of the shank a substantial engagement will be had between the bolt and the walls ofthe hole and av comparatively great weight may be supported by the leg without breakage of any of the parts.
It is obvious that it is not my intention to limit my invention to an extensible leg having a socket and shank square in cross section, since it is clear that if the socket and* shank are formed so that the shank is prevented from turning in the socket such a construction would come within the spirit of my invention. Furthermore, I do not intend to limit the use of my extensible leg for attachment to adrawer or other pull-out receptacle although the form of the leg shown in the drawings is primarily intended for use where the leg may be pivotally mounted.
lVhat l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. An extensible leg comprising an upper portion having a socket extending upwardly from the lower end` thereof, a lower portion having a shank adapted to slidably fit in said socket, said shank being provided with a plurality of substantially circular holes, the walls of said holes having the outer edges thereof beveled, and means extending through the wall of said socket and adapted and arranged to enter any one of said holes whereby said lower portion may be maintainedv in adjusted position in said socket, said holes being spaced so that the beveled surface of one hole substantially meets the beveled surface of the adjacent hole whereby said means will be broughtl into register with one of said holes, 1
2. An extensible leg adaptedy to support a weight and comprising an upper portion having a socket extending upwardly from the lower end thereof, a lower portion having a shank adapted to slidably lit in said socket, said shank being provided with a plurality of holes in alignment, a cylindrical bolt threaded through the wall of said socket and adapted to enter any one of said holes, the walls of each ofsaid holes for a greater portion of their length being at substantially right angles to the side of said shank and the outerends of said walls being beveled whereby when the inner end of said bolt is moved in engagement with the beveled portion of the walls of one of said holes said shank will be moved to allow said bolt t-o enter said hole so as to cause the sides ,thereof to bear against the walls of said hole to carry said weight and hold said socket and said shank in 'adjusted relation.
