IMPROVEMENT IN SEAL-LOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,493, dated March 2, 1875; application filed December 4, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, OHRIsToPHER 0. WHEELER and ANTHONY LAFFREY, both of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which improvements the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the said improvements, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lock embodying our invention, one side of the case being removed; Fig. 2, an elevation of that side or edge of the lock in which provision is made for the reception of the key and the arrangement of the seal; and Fig. 3, a view of the key.

In the drawing, A represents the case of the lock. With the exceptions hereinafter mentioned, the case may be made in the usual manner. a a are pins or studs projecting inwardly from one side of the case. B is the bolt. The bolt is fitted and arranged to slide freely between the studs a a, but may be arranged in any suitable way or guide which will conduct it, when drawn and released in the manner hereinafter described, into and from the slot in the free end of the shackle. C is a spring resting against the bolt, and

is the shackle. The free end of the shackle is slotted to receive the bolt, and enters the case in the usual manner. One end of the bolt is made cylindrical to receive the key; and e is a small pin or post projecting laterally from this cylindrical part. E is a key, recessed at its end to receive the cylindrical part oil the bolt, and notched longitudinally, as shown at c, to receive the post or pin 0. c is a notch sunken from the notch e.

In order to unlock the lock, the key is inserted through an opening, 0, in one edge of the case, and is pushed upon the cylindrical end of the bolt, which is arranged to receive it. The key is then turned until pin 6 enters the notch e, and is then drawn outward uned as to receive the sides and lower end and expose the central part of the seal, and is open at the top to receive the latter. We prefer to make the seal F of glass. This glass may be prepared on one side to receive written or printed characters. The seal is dropped into its recess when the shackle is lifted. The heel of the shackle is so constructed as to close the upper end of the recess 0 when the shackle is engaged by the bolt. The position of the heel when the lock is open is represented by the full lines in Fig. 1, and by the dotted lines when the lock is closed. By this means the look, after being once looked and sealed, cannot be opened until the seal is broken, that being the only way in which the key-hole can then be exposed.

The lock is simple in its construction and operation, cheap, and durable and the manner of sealing it renders it easy to determine when it has been wrongfully tampered with. The lock cannot be opened until after the seal is broken, and not then without the proper key.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A padlock wherein the key-hole is arranged in the rear edge of the case, and is surrounded by a recess, open at one end or side to receive a seal, the said look also being provided with a pivoted shackle, having its heel constructed substantially as specified, to close the said open end or side of the recess and inclose or look the seal when the shackle is locked.
