CAR CONSTRUCTION.

This invention relates to railway freight 7 cars and has for an object the provision of a car. which will have a maximum width- Within clearance limits allowed, so as to ob- 5 tain a maximum capacity and yet permit of the application of the coping members, side walls, side braces or stakes etc., without materially increasing the over all dimension of the car.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel slde plate or coping member for the side wall of a freight car.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel end construction for the side wall of a freight car These and other objects will be apparent from 'the following description.
Referrin to the drawings in which like reference c aracters refer to like parts, Fig. 1 is a side elevational view ofthe end of a railway car embodying the invention; Figs. 2 and 3 are plan and end views respectively of the same; Figs. 4 and 5 are cross sectional views taken on the lines 44 and 55 respectively of Fig. 2; Figs. 6 and 7 are side and end elevational detail views respectively of a side st and Figs. 8 and 9am sectional views of t e side post taken on the lines 8-8 and 99 respectively of Fig. 6.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the reference character 1 indicates a freight car body which is of the hopper or ore type having sidewalls 2, sloping end floors 3'and an underframe 4.
At each end of each side wall 2, posts and 6 are provided, the lower end portions of both of which are secured to a side sill member 7 at one side of the-body, such member forming portion of the underframe 4. The post 5 is located at the end of the body and is preferabl flanges 8 and 9, t e flange 8 extending in a direction longitudinally of the car and the flange 9 extending in a direction transversely of the car. The post 6 is spaced some distance from the post 5 in the direction of the length of the car and from its lower end to a point beneath the sloping end floor is of flanged channel form in cross section and for the remainder of its length is substantially Z-shaped in cross-section. This post is so formed anddisposed that the flanges 10 and 11 thereof Wlll be in substantially the same vertical plane as the web of the side sill member 7. The channel shaped porof angle form, having tion. of the stake extends outwardly from the vertical plane of the side sill member 7, the web 12 thereof forming a flat surface.
At a point indicated by the reference character 13 the flange 10 is curved upwardly and outwardly-to a point indicated by the reference character 14 and contacts with and is secured to the one side of one of the sloping end floors 3. At the point 14 the flange 10 and the channel shaped portion of the stake are merged into a flange 15 which is in substantially the same plane as the web 12.
Each of the side walls further comprises a side wall plate 16 which extends between the posts 6 and at each end for a portion of its width is secured to the web 12 of the channel shapedportion of one of the posts 6 and for the remainder of its width is secured to the flange 15 of the Z-shaped portion of this post. It will here be noted that, from the upper edge of the side wall plate 16 to the lower edge thereof the flange 15 and the web 12 are in the same vertical plane and from the lower edge of the side wall plate to the lower edge of the post, the Web is sloped inwardly, thus the portion of the post below the side wall plate is of varying cross section. It will be understood,
however, that this portion of the channel A shaped portion of the postmay be of uniform cross section.
To the lower edge portion of the plate 16, the upper edge port-ion of a side floor plate 17 is secured such floor plate extending downwardly and inwardly and at its lower end being. secured to the undcrframe in the usual manner.
The upper portion of-each of the side walls is formed by a coping member 18 which extends for substantially the full length of the body and at its ends is connected with end coping members 19 through themedium of gusset members 20 which are secured to both.
The member 18 is of angular form in cross section for the greater p/ortion of its length, having a substantially -shaped upper portion 21 and a vertically disposed flange 22' extending downwardly therefrom which flange has secured thereto the upper edge portion of the side wall plate 16. The part 21 of this member 18 comprises a downwardly and inwardly sloping portion 23 and a downwardly and outwardly sloping portion 24 which portions form the V-shaped upper part of the member, the open side of the V being directed outwardly, i. e., in the direction of the outside of the car. The flange 22 of the member 18 overlaps and is secured to the upper portion of the flange 15 of the post 6. From this flange 15 to the adjacent end of the member 18 the flange 22 is cut away or omitted and the portion 24 is bentv inwardly in line with the portion 23, thus increasing the width of the end portion of the member. Between the posts 5 and 6 at .each side of the car, a side wall late 25 is provided, one end portion of.w ich is secured to the flange 8 of the post 5 and the other end portion to the flange 11 of the post 6. This plate 25 and flanges 8 and 11 of the posts 5 and 6 respectively are set back from the vertical plane of the plate 16, thus pro viding an ofl'set or recess in the side wall for 'the accommodation of ladder irons 26 which are secured to the plate 25 and flanges 8 and 11 of the posts. When the ladder irons are so secured they will be substantially wholly within the vertical plane of the plate 16 and will not increase the over all width of the car. This plate 25 has secured to it one of the outer side flanges 27 of one of the sloping end floors. The upper portion of the plate is provided with an upwardly and outward- 1y extending flange 28 which contacts with and is secured to the underside of the end portion of the. member 18.
Each of the gusset members 20 which serves to connect the ends of the side and and coping members 18 and 19' respectively, is provided with a downwardly and inwardly sloping portion. 29 which is secured to the sloping end portion of the member 18 and flange 28 of the sidewall plate 25. This gusset member is also provided with a horizontally disposed flange 30 which is secured to a horizontally disposed flange 31 of the end coping member 19', the flange 32 of such member 19 being sloped downwardly and inwardly and secured to the posts 5 at its ends and to the end floor intermediate its ends. To further connect the members 18 and 1.9 and to close the space between the sloping end floor and the members 18 and 19, which is due to the large radius in the sloping end floor as indicatedby the reference character 33, the gusset member is provided with a downwardly and inwardly extending portion 34 which overlaps a portion of the s oping end floor at one corner of the body and is secured thereto. This portion 34 is so shaped that it conforms to the shape of the 0nd floor at the corner of the body and when secured as just described, forms in effect a portion of the end floor.
- It will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains that changes may be made in the detail and ar- 'rangements of the parts forming the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a dump car, a side wall having inset portions adjacent its ends, and a copin member forming the upper portion of sai wall, said coping member having flat downwardly and inwardly sloping ends.
2. In a dump car, a side wall, and a coping member for said wall, said member having fiat downwardly and inwardly sloping end portions and a flanged portion intermediate said flat end portions.
3. In a dump car, a side wall, a coping member for said wall, a sloping end floor, a coping member for said floor, and a gusset member connecting said members and forminga portion of said floor.
4. In a dump car, a side wall, a slopin end floor, -=coping members secured to sai wall and floor,and a member connected with said coping members'and floor and forming a portion of said floor.
5. In a car, a side wall, and a post for said wall, said post having a channel shaped portion and a Z shaped portion, the web of said 2 sllliaped portion forming an offset in said wa 6. 7. A post for railway freight cars having a channel shaped lower portion and-a Z- shaped upper portion, said channel shaped portion having lateral flanges, one of said flanges I being continuous for substantially the full length of said post and forming one of the flanges of the Z-shaped portion of the post.
8. A post for railway freight cars having a flanged channel shaped lower portion and a Z-shaped upper portion, one of the flanges of the lower portion forming one of the flanges of the Z-shaped portion and the other flange of said channel shaped portion being merged into the other flange of said Z-shaped portion.
9. In a railway car, a side sill member, a side post secured to said member, a coping member secured to said side post, a sheathing plate secured to said coping member and post, a sheathin plate ina difl'erent vertical plane than the first mentioned plate and secured to said post, and a flange on said plate secured to said coping member.
10. In a railway car, a side sill member, a post secured to said member and extending upwardly therefrom, the upper ortion of said post having oppositely extending flanges in di erent vertical planes, a coping member secured to one of said flanges, a sheathing plate secured to said flange and coping memher, said coping member beyond said flange hein flat and sloped downwardly and inwar ly and a sheathing plate secured to the other of said flanges and to the flat sloping portion of said coping member.
11. In a railway car, a side sill member, a side post secured to said member, the lower portion of said post being channel shaped in cross section having its web in a plane be yond the plane of said member, the upper portion of said post having a flange in the vertical plane of said web and a flange in the vertical plane of said side sill and sheathing plates secured to said flanges.
12. In a railway car, a side post, a side Wall sheathing terminating at and secured to said post, a side wall sheathing in a different vertical plane from the first mentioned sheathing and secured to said post, a coping member having a flange secured to the first mentioned side wall sheathing and post, saidcoping member beyond said post being flat, and a flange on the second mentioned side sheathing secured to the flat portion of said coping member.
13. lln a car, a side wall, a coping member secured to said wall, said member having a downwardly depending flange which terminates short of the ends of said member and an angular upper part, a portion of which for a portion of its length slopes inwardly and upwardly, and a portion of which for substantially the entire length of the member slopes upwardly and outwardly, the first mentioned portion, from the ends of said flange to the end of said member, being displaced to the plane of the upwardly and outwardly sloping portion.
14. in a car, a side wall. and a coping member secured to said wall, said member having a V-shaped portion terminating short of the ends thereof, one part of said ll-shaped portion extending the full length of said member and other parts at the ends being displaced to the plane of the first mentioned part.

In a railway car, a side sill member, a side post secured to said member, the upper portion of said post having flanges extending in opposite directions in difl'erent vertical planes, a side wall sheathing secured to one of said flanges, a side wall sheathing secured to the other of said flanges, anda sloping floor having a flange secured to the first mentioned sheathing and flange, and having a flange secured to the second mentioned sheathing and flange and a coping member securedto both of said sheathings and to said post.
19. In a railway car. a side sill member, a side post secured to said member, said post having a Z-shaped upper portion and a channel shaped lower portion, side sheathings secured to both of the flanges of said Z-shaped portion, and a sloping end floor secured to said sheathing and to said flanges 20. in a railway car, a side sill member, a side post secured to said member, said post having a channel shaped portion and a Z-shaped portion, the web of said channel shaped portion and one of the flanges of said Z-shaped portion being in substantial the same vertical plane, and side wal sheathing secured to said flange and web.

In a railway car, a side sill member, a side post secured to said member. said post comprising an outwardly extending corrugation tor a portion of its length, a flange in substantially the same vertical plane as the web of said corrugation and a flange in a different vertical plane, a side wall sheathing plate secured to said web and adjacent flange, a second side wall sheathing plate secured to the other of said flanges, a sloping end floor a portion of said post being made to conform to the shape of the side portion of said floor, means for securing said portion and floor together, flanges on said floor secured to the flanges on said post and to said side sheathing plates, and coping means for said sheathing plates.

23. In a railway car having a Wide central body portion and contracted end body portions and coping members for said sides, said coping members being widest at said contracted end portion.
24. In a railway car having a wide central body portion and contracted end body rtions, coping members for the walls of said portions, said coping members being V- shaped throughout the length of said central body portion and flat throughout the length of said contracted end body portions.
