UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FORMAN G. SPENCER, OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE UPSON WALTON COM- PANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CABLE CLAMP.
Application filed May 14, 1925.
This invention relates to cable clamps and has for its object the provision of an improved clamp which is of simple and inexpensive construction and extremely eiificient in its clamping action.
Further objects of the invention are in part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter.
In the drawing, Fig. l is an end elevation of a cable clamp embodying my invention, part thereof being broken away; Fig. 2 is a side elevation with a part broken a 7ay; and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3 3, Fig. 2, the cable being shown in elevation.
Referring to the drawing, the present improved cable clamp includes a metal clamping jaw member comprising a substantially flat base portion l provided with two spaced pairs of upwardly extending arms 2. The arms of each pair are suitably spaced apart to provide therebetween an opening or passageway 3 for the superposed or overlapping cable portions l, which are clamped together between the arms of the jaw member by a U- shaped bolt member 5. Said bolt member straddles said cable portions with its end portions extending through openings 6 in the clamping jaw member between the two pairs of arms 2 thereof, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 3. The end portions of said bolt member extend below the clamping jaw member and are threaded as at 7, to receive the lock nuts 8, which, when tightened on f said threaded bolt portions, lirmly clamp the two cable portions together between the bolt member and the clamping Jaw member. In order to increase the eiective clamping Serial No. 30,183.
or binding` action of the present clamp the four upwardly extending arms 2 are provided with downwardly and inwardly inclined inner faces 9 so that the opening 3 between each pair of arms is of substantially V shape, with the result that when the lock nuts 8 are tightened upon the bolt member 5, the lower cable portion is firmly wedged and clamped between each pair of arms, as clearly indicated in Fig. l.
To further increase the clamping or binding action of the present clamp, the inner faces 9 of each upwardly extending arm 2 is conveXly curved in a transverse direction, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3, so that the area of engagement of the lower cable portion with the inner face of each arm 2 is reduced to substantially a line,
as clearly indicated in Fig. 3.
The cable portions are, therefore, firmly and securely clamped or held together without liability of accidental loosening or disengagement thereof. 1
A cable clamp, comprising a clamping j aw member, and a U-shaped bolt member e'X- signature.
