UNITED sra'rss ROWLAND I-I. BOONE, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO PATENT QFFICE.
EDEN VJASHER CORFORA- TION, OF NEi V YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
CYLINDER FOR WASHING- MACHINES.
Applieation filed July 19,
This invention relates to a cylinder for washing machines, and it is an object of this invention to simplify the construction and assembly of such cylinder for reducing the cost of manufacture.
The invention comprises the novel structure and combinations hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views,
Figure 1 is an elevational view of my improved washing cylinder.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view upon the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sect onal view through the cylinder at one of the baflie plates.
Figure 1 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View through one of the cylinder heads taken in a longitudinal direction.
Figure 5 is an enlarged broken sectional view taken upon the line 55 of Figure 8.
Figure 6 is an enlarged broken longitudinal sectional view of the cylinder taken ad jacent the sliding door thereof.
Figiu'e 7 is a broken fragmentary eleva tional View of a cylinder having a hinged door.
Figure 8 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the cylinder at the hinge of the door.
Figure 9 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of acylinder head and the hinged doors.
Referring now to the drawing, the numeral 1 represents a perforated cylindrical member or sheet of metal, the ends of which extend into under-cut grooves 2 in the peripheral heads 3 of end heads 4 that close the cylinder. These end heads 4 are in the form of solid metal plates or the like, a series of recesses or socket-s being formed circumferentially of the interior of these end heads adjacent the outer periphery. Each recess or socket is formed by a pair of parallel radially extending lugs 5 (Figure 3) and a medial lug 6. The sockets in the respective heads are in alinement, and battle plates 7 1924. Serial No. 727,025. a i
which in the present instance are shown as made of wood have their ends supported in opposite recesses. These baffle plates are:
provided with longitudinally extending grooves 8 through which adjustable belts or rods 9 extend and which are provided with heads 10 engaging the outer surface of said heads. 1n the present instance, each rod consists of two sections, the end of one section being threaded in the end of the other section as shown in Figure 5. Consequently, when a wrench or key is applied to the heads, the sections may be relatively rotated for extending or contracting the rod. When such rotation contracts the rod, it is evidentthat the heads l will be drawn tightly against the ends of the perforated cylindrical. member 1.
The clothes to be washed are adapted to be put in this cylindrical member and for this reason, the same must be provided with a suitable opening and door therefor. In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, a sliding arcuate door 11 which is suitably perforated is confined for sliding movement in the grooves of the heads said grooves be ing suitably enlarged for such a purpose. By sliding this door 11 in the proper direction an opening for the insertion of clothes will be uncovered. Instead of using a sliding door, an arcuate perforated door 12 may be hinged to the cylinder adjacent the opening through which the clothes are inserted.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
In a device of the class described, a perforated cylindrical shell, a pair of heads having grooves for receiving the ends of said shell, baffles extending between said heads, means on said heads for supporting said battles, and adjustable rods extending through said baflies and connecting said heads, each of said rods comprising a pair of telescopic, threaded members.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
ROWLAND H. BOQNE.
