Application filed October 20,1924. Serial No. 744,736.
My present invention pertains to doors and door appurtenances for stock cars, and it has for its object to provide a construction including among'other elements agangway door over which stock can walk.
Other objects and practical advantages of the invention. will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and formng part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing. the outer side of a stock car constructed in ac cordance with the preferredembodiment of my invention.
Figures 2 and 3 arehorizontal sections taken in the planes indicated by the lines 2-2 and 33, respectively of Figure 1.
Figure 4-. is a detail vertical cross-section taken in the plane indicated by the line 4.-% of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail vertical cross-section in the same plane as Figure 4, but with the gangwa-y door placed in an idle position on the floor of the car body.
Figures 6 and 7 are detail perspective views of parts included in my invention and are hereinafter explicitly referred to.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The floor of the car body is indicated by the reference numeral 1, and the side wall of the body being designated by 2, and including stiles 3 at opposite sides of a door opening 4;. At 5 is my novel gangway door, the major portion of which is preferably of appropriate wood. Bolted at 6 to the lower portion of the outer side of the door 5 is a metallic strap 7, having at its lower edge two barrels 8 integral with the strap and serving for the hinge connection of two 0 en links 9 of rectangular configuration. he opposite bars of the open links 9 are hinged- 1y arranged in integral barrels 10 at the outer ends of metallic straps 11 which latter are bolted at 12 or are otherwise fixedly connected to the floor l. Manifestly, by virtue of the manner just described of connecting the door 5, the said door 5 may be fastened in the upright position shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4:, and when released the door 5 can be placed in the position as shown in Figure 5 or can be arranged so as to depend from the door opening 4 and at the outer side of the car. It will also be noted that the door 5 can be arranged so as to extend laterally outward from the car body and bridge a space between the car body and a loading platform so. that stock can pass over the saiddoor in perfect safety.
Bolted or otherwise connected to the door 5 ad acent to the upper edge thereof is a longitudinal metallic strap 13 with eyes or barrels 14, preferably integral, at its ends, ant serving for the hinge connection of angular fastening links 15*, Figures 1, 3 and 7. Included in my invention is a novel and useful door fastener. The said fastener construction comprises an upright metallic plate 15 appropriately fixed to the face of one stile 3, and a metallic bar 16 having an eye 17 ad acent to one end which receives a loop 18 on the bar 15 for the connection of the bars 15 and 16 in a loose manner as best shown in Figure 6. The bar 15 is preferably bolted to the stile 3 referred to and is equlpped with a pin 19 and with spaced staples 20, the pin 19 being adapted to be received in an aperture 21 of the bar 16 and 89 the staples 20 to be received in slots 22 of the bar 16. It will be noticed that the bar 16 1s a keeper bar, and that the staples 20 are adapted to receive a pin 23, the said pin 23 being connected by achain link 24 to a staple 25 or the like on the stile 3 referred to. The staples or projections 20 are de signed for use in cooperation with one fastening link 15 in securing in closed and working position the door 5, the keeper bar 16 being positioned over the fastening link referred to as illustrated. The other fastening link 15 is slotted to receive a staple 26 on the other stile 3, and is detachably secured on the said staple 26 by a pin 27, Figures 1 and 3.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention the staple 26 is carried by the pendent portion of an angular keeper 28 fixed to the face of the last-named stile 3 and adapted to guide and receive the lower portion of an upper slidable door 29, the said door 29 being appropriately hung from a longitudinal rail 30 on the car body and being provide-d at 31 with a loosely connected fastening link, the said link 31 being apertured, as shown in Figure 2, to receive the pin 19 and is adapted to be interposed as shown in Figure 2 between the body plate or bar 15 and the keeper bar 16.
In the practical use of my invention the upper door 29 is moved longitudinally into and out of closed position and when closed may be effectlvely fastened 1n the manner described.
The door 5, when the car is to be loaded 7 or unloaded, is moved inwardly as far asthe links 9 will permit and is positioned on and in parallelism to the floor "of the car body or else is permitted .to extend laterally outward from the car body. I would also have it understood that when the door 5 is to be closed and fastened, the lower portion of the said door 5 is'positioned as far outward, as possible.
Notwithstanding the practical advantages of my improved construction'it will be noted that the same is 5 simple and inexpensive 1 and at the same time is well adapted to withstand the usage to which structures of corresponding character are ordinarily subjected. Q i I I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement otthe parts" embraced in the present and preferred, embodiment of 'my invention in order to impart a full, clear and "exact un derstanding of the ,fsaid. embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as [claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: V
i In aifastening means for a pair of doors comprising av normally vertically secured plate, a loop extending from the upper end thereof "a barnormall" 'de Jendin from said loop to lie parallelfwith. the plate v a "pin laterally extending 'from said plate, a pair of spaced staples alsolprojecting fromsaid plate; and said bar being formed with an opening and also with a pair of spaced slots to r'eceiveithe pin andstaple respectively and said staple's'being adaptedjto receive a link ofthe doors for securing thev same between the plate and bar,
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
