WILLIAM TUCKER, OF FISKEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BIT=STOCKS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,365, dated March 2, 1875; application filed September 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TUCKER, of Fiskedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bit-Stocks, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to means for attaching braces, handles, and stocks, to a peculiar form of the shanks of twist bits and angers which have flat holding ends or shanks, each of the same or nearly the same width and thickness as the metal of the pod or twist of its individual bit or anger, and consequently of varying dimensions in different sizes.
The present invention consists, primarily, in constructing and providing a stock or holder with a central V-projection within a large fiat socket, and a clamp-screw in the same longitudinal plane, to ooact with corresponding V-notches and countersinks in the flat holding ends or shanks of different sizes of bits or angers, so as to holdthe same true and tight. The invention consists, secondly, in adapting the peculiar holder for applicationas an attachment to ordinary braces.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents an elevation of an auger-bit and a brace attachment, partly in section, illustrating this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, from a point of View at right angles to that of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a portion of an auger-bit, and a portion of an improved brace, illustrating the invention in a modified form. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the holder or stock, and a portion of the bit of a machine-auger, illustrating the present invention as thus applied.
The lines 1 l and 2 2, Figs. 1 and 2, indicate the planes of the sections in the figures correspondingly numbered.
A stock or holder, 11, made according to this invention, is constructed with a recess or socket, z, of the same general shape as the flat holding ends 3 of auger-bits A, of the peculiar form hereiubefore referred to, and of sufficient size to accommodate the largest of the same. A central V-projection, y, within the recess and socket, corresponds with notches 4,
in the extremities of the holding ends, and engages therewith. A clamping or locking screw, 00, tapped into one side of the holder in the same longitudinal plane as the \/-pro jection, corresponds in position with, and has a pointed end to enter uniform central countersinks 5, in the faces or backs of the flat holding ends.
Bits of various sizes are thus adapted to be truly and tightly held in one and the same stock or holder, notwithstanding the correspondingly different dimensions of their holding ends, the latter being brought to truth in the direction of their thickness.
The stock or holder has been adapted for application as an attachment to ordinary braces, by arranging the peculiar socket z, with its appurtenances, at one end, and a central tapering square, 20, of ordinary shape and size, at its other end, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Braces may, however, be manufactured with stocks or holders H, constructed as above specified, in lieu of the ordinary heads, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The invention is also applicable to machine-angers, and the stock or holder H may, in this modification, be formed on the end of the spindle, or it may constitute a special attachment, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
The following is claimed as new in this invention, namely:
1. A stock or holder, H, having a central V- projection, y, within the inner end of a large flat socket, z, and a clamp-screw, w, in the same longitudinal plane, substantially as herein illustrated and described, for the purpose specified.
2. The stock or holder H, Figs. 1 and 2, having a flat socket, 2, projection y, and clampscrew 00, at one end, and a square, w, at its other end, for application to the head of an ordinary brace, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
