WASHING MACHINE.
Application filed November 27, 1922; Serial No. 693,538.
This invention has reference to washing machines and particularly to the domestic or household type machine.
The invention has forits principal object to combine in the oscillator tub type machine, the vacuum cup type machine; whereby the advantages embodied in oscillating and vacuum cup machines are contained in one machine.
This application discloses an improvement on the tub or container forming the subject matter of the application filed by me October 12, 1922, bearing Serial No. 594,019. In that caselthe cups, agitators, or pounders are more in the form of an attachment and the walls of the container are constructed to receive the same. As herein disclosed, the vacuum cups are built in and, preferably located in the head walls of the container, producing a simple and inexpensive structure and yet obtaining substantially the same results as the structure referred to in said mentioned application.
That the invention may be more fully understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the present invention, illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention, in which Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section through a tub or container embodying my invention;
' Figure 2 is a detail transverse section through the vacuum cups, as the samewould appear on the line 2-2 Figure l, and
Figure 3 is a plan view in section looking up into the vacuum cups, as the same would appear, if taken on the line 33 Figure 2.
Like characters of reference denote 'coralso the power unit, such as an electric motor, er other means. A complete disclosure of these elements have been shown in said pending application and may correspond thereto or be modified at the discretion of the manufacturer. I
The tub or container 1 is preferably intendedfto be mounted so that it may be oscillated alternately in opposite directions. It is also preferably constructed of sheet metal and includes the side walls joined by the curved preferably corrugated or ribbed rubbing wall 3 and the head or top walls 4. The head walls are spaced and receive in such space a central neck or inlet portion 5 of suitable contour, the opening 6 of which is covered by a removable lid or cover, not
shown. The head walls 4 on either side of with their axes in upwardly converging relation and flangedly connected with said head or top walls through the openings 8, somewhat in the manner shown in Figures 1 and 2. As shown, there are preferably three cups on each side of the neck 5, but by such showing it is not intended to limit the number of cups, as-I realize such an arrangement is capable of" modification, and that any number of cups on either side of the inlet to the tub or container may be pro vided' andstill be within the scope of the inventlon.
As in my pending application referred to, there is shown on the bottom of the tub or container a partition or obstruction 1-0,.
being a sheet preferably bent into the form of an inverted U to provide a compartment; the walls having openings 11 therein for the circulation of water in the tub or container, and for the passage of water to a drain pipe, pokt) shown, when it is desired to drain the In operation, the vacuum cups will act on the water, as the tub is oscillated, first in one direction and then in the opposite direction, and the water forcing the air out of the cups into the water and through the fabrics will result in a cleansing of the fabrics. The oscillation of the tub will move the clothing or fabrics toward and away rec lllfi acts to keep the clothes or fabrics in agitation and to change the position thereof within the container or tub. Furthermore, the use of vacuum cups in an oscillatory tub or container have a suction effect on the clothing or fabrics as they are moved with the volume of water to thecups, and such suction will act to momentarily hold or re tard the fabrics as the water falls away due to the alternate action of the tub or container, and as the water falls or moves away i What I claim is 15 A tub for Washing machines having a spaced" downwardly and inwardly inclined head walls adjacent its outer sides and an upwardly extending inlet portion disposed in the space between the head walls, and 20 vacuum cups connected to the inclined head walls and projecting upwardly thereabove and exteriorly thereof and having their axes inclined upwardly in converging relation.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my handthis 25th day of November, 1922.
ALPHEUS W. ALTORFER.
