This invention relates to improvements in the use of dynamos for supplying current to the filament and plate circuit of vacuum tube relays.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates an embodiment of the invention as applied to a system.for supplying current to the filament and plate circuits of a vacuum tube I Figure 2 illustrates a filter system which may be used in conjunction with the current According to the present invention, a direct current machine is used and comprises a commutator provided on each side of the armature and in addition, collector rings are used, as shown in Fig.1. The first collector 1 of relatively low tension supplies current to the filaments 3. In order to increase the current tension and thus to reduce theloss'es at the collector 1, the filaments of the vacuum tube relays of the same amplifier are preferably connected in series. This is 1 contrary to the general practice accordin to which the filaments are connected in para lel. The secondary winding of the transformer of each amplifying stage may be as a matter of fact connected independently and without special complications to the proper pole of the filament of the tube which it actuates.
A second collector 2 of relatively -high tension supplies current to the plate circuit 4 of the vacuum tube relay.
In order to-avoid variations in voltage which may cause noises in the amplifier precautions should be taken in the construction of the dynamo (slanting the slots, dividing into large sections, etc), and in addition self induction coils are connected in series and capacities in shunt with the output circuit.
This latter is preferably accomplished in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2. A capacity 7 is connected directly in shunt with the brushes. A double wound self induction coil 8 is connected in series with the output circuit which is also shunted by a capacity 9. The invention also extends to the use of the samearrangement for the low' voltage collector. This is desirable as every small heat variation efi'ects a variation in the emission of the filaments and causes current varia-- tions in the plate circuit. Furthermore, a floating battery 5, is provided to aid in equalization, thereby preventing variations in the filament current which would result in hum or noise. This battery can be used to drive the dynamo as a dynamotor. in the event that the normal source fails. By means of the rings 6, connections may be made to an alternating current circuit so that the devicemay function as a rotary converter for the purpose of charging this battery. Furthermore, when the power source fails at which time the dynamotor is driven from the battery, these rings may make possible the use of the dynamo as a signaling or ringing current source in the event that the apparatus and circuits of Fig. 1 are employedin a telephone system.
In order to avoid. losses due to the excitation of the dynamo, quite often it will be advisable to use a permanent magnet field for the.dynamo. The driving motor (not shown) may be an electrical, hydraulic or' any other motor.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a vacuum tube system, a plurality of vacuum tubes provided with filaments and anodes, a generator having a low voltage output and a high voltage input, means in cluding an external source of power normally serving to drive said generator, at battery connected across the output of said generator, filaments energized from said low voltage output, said high voltage output serving to supply voltage to said anodes,
said generator being arranged to be operated from said battery when said power source is not used;
2. In an arrangement for supplying heating current and space current in an electron discharge tube system, mechanism for generating a direct current of low voltage and a direct current of high voltage, said direct currents each having an alternating current component, means for normally operating said mechanism, a current storing device for filtering out the alternating current component of said low voltage direct current, and a filter for filtering out the alternating a battery for supplying said low voltage currents, a machine for supplying said high voltage current, said machine being operable 1 from said battery, and means for operating said machine to charge said battery.
