My invention relates to printing presses; more especially 1t relates to an automatic feeding and discharging device for such presses, for instance platen printing presses.
I am aware of the fact that there exist devices of this kind, in which the grippers moving the work-piece, i. e. the printing sheet, swing or oscillate around an axis arranged vertically with respect to the plane of that work-piece, but with those known devices jdifliculties were encountered in operating their grippers in such a manner that the work-pieces, or the printing-sheets respectively, were fed into the press, moved forward therein, and discharged, in the proper manner. An especially diflicult poi'ntwas keeping the grippers checked in their end-positions, and a lot of interruptions of service resulted just from this cause. Hitherto the grippers have been actuated by eccentrics, pawl-gears, and the like,
which, however, gave rise to difficulties after a comparatively short duration of service even if they were of first-class make. Resource was taken to springs which were inserted into the respective driving means and the object of which was to force the actuat-v ing members proper into the required positions in spite of play and back-lash. But just these springs caused new disturbances.
The object of my invention is to do away with these and other difliculties and to obtain a positive drive which is superior to the former drives, in that the grippers are caused by very simple and reliable means to move exactly in the requisite manner and at the accurate point of time. An important point which must be observed is that the grippers must not move with uniform speed through their path, but the speed must be accelerated gradually from zero to a certain maximum and must-then be delayed gradually down to fore, therein that a driving member which rotates with uniform speed, engages, during every feed-movement of the grippers, a second rotating member at several points consecutively, viz, from the outer end in the direction tothe axis, and reversely, whereby the speed is accelerated gradually from zero to a maximum and from this down to combine the parts concerned in such a manner that the rotating driving member engages the driven part while the grippers perform their feeding movement, and that the dr vlng part (pivot, roll, sliding block) is shifted radially or approximately radially along the driven part, whereby motion is imparted to the grippers only when, and onl as long as, it is necessary to move the WOI' piece. In order to retain in every case the grlppers in their. position of rest, a checking device controlled. by the press may. be provided, this device acting on the driven part of. the grippers, as is all more fully described hereinafter.
My invention is illustrated diagrammatisection; Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on line II of Fig. 1, Figure 3 is a vertical section through the parts shown in the upper part of the lefthand half of Fig. 1, in the plane of this Figure (1), the Figure (3) be-, ing drawn on an enlarged scale and showing the gear intended for the grippers and carried by the platen; and Figure 4 is a frontview of the parts shown in Fig. 3.
In the frame 1 of the press is supported the main driving shaft 2 (Figs. 1 and 2) to which is afiixed a disk 3 or another member carrying two rolls 4 which revolve with the same speed as the shaft 2. Below this shaft is a shaft 5 also supported in the frame 1, and on it is fastened a disk 6 having a plu rality of guide-wa s 7. In the example shown there are our radial guide-ways forming a cross. The arrangement of the rolls 4 relatively to said guide-ways is such that they enga e them successively when revolving, where y the disk 6 is partially rotated. This rotatory motion commences when a roll enters into the adjacent guide-way, and the speed of this motion increases gradually as the roll moves towards the centre of the disk- 6; it is greatest at the end of the path of the respective roll in the respective guideway, and'then decreases down to zero while the roll moves away from that end outwards to the outer end of the respective guideway.
That adually accelerated and then gradually retarded motion is transmitted by the control disk 6 to the shaft 5 and by this to a pair of bevel-wheels 8, one of-these wheels bein afiixed to the shaft 5 and the other to a s aft 10, the other end of which is connected by a ball-joint 9 with an obliquely upwards extending shaft 10, at the upper end of which is a bevel-wheel 11 (Fig. 3). This wheel meshes with another bevel-wheel 12 secured to a short horizontal shaft 14 located at right angles to the plane of the platen 13, or to the plane of the work piece located in the platen respectively.
Owing to the connections described, the
shaft 14 is rotated in the same manner, as regards speed, as the control disk 6. It is provided with the known gripper supporting member 15 which swings or oscillates 1n the plane of the platen 13 and is opened and closed in the usual manner.
In order to check the gripper supporting member 15 in the position 0 rest, a checking disk 16 is aflixed to the shaft 14:. The rim of this disk is provided with a plurality of notches 17, of which there are four in the example shown corresponding to the number of the guide-ways in the disk 6. The notches co-operate with a checking bolt 19 which is under the pressure of a spiral spring 18 and is controlled by a cam 20 suspended from the shaft 14 and acting on a roll 22 located on a pivot 23 extending laterally forth from the upper end of the checking bolt 19. The cam 20 is actuated by means of a rod 21 (Fig. 4). The latter is moved to and fro, in the example shown in Figure 1, by a bell-crank lever 242&, the arm 24* of which is provided with a-roll 25 engaging a cam-groove 3 of the disk 3. The shape of this groove is, of course, such that the movements of the members 24 -24, 21, and 20 are timed in exact correspondence with the rotation and operation of the checking disk 16 for the grippers.
I wish it to be understood that the check ing device shown and described is merely an example. It may be devised otherwise without departing from the invention. Also the gearing composed of the control disk with its four guide-ways and of the disk or other member with the two rolls that cooperate with said guide-ways may be devised otherwise without departing from the invention. The conditions to be fulfilled may be fulfilled by other, equivalent means. Such means may consist, for instance, of elliptical wheels, elliptical part-toothings, or the like.
Although I have shown the invention applied to a platen printing-press, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself thereto, in that the invention can be used also in connection with printing presses of other kinds. I
I claim:
1. An automatic feeding and dischar 'ngdevice for printing-presses, especially p aten printing-presses, comprising, in combination, gripper supporting members arranged for intermittent rotation on an axle located at right angles with respect to the plane of the work-piece; a rota driving member and means to rotate it with uniform speed; another rotary member arranged to be driven by said driving member with alternately and adually increasing and decreasmg spec during every feed-motion of said gripper supporting members; and means to transmit positively motion from said driven member to the gripper supporting members.
2. An automatic feeding and dischargingdeyice for printing-presses, especially platen printing-presses, comprising, in combination, gripper supporting members arranged for intermittent rotation on an axle located at right angles with respect to the plane of the work-piece; a rotary driving member and means to rotate it with uniform speed; another rotary member arranged to be driven by sald driving member; motiontransmitting means provided at the driving member, and motion-receiving means provided at said driven member and being adapted to be engaged by said motion-transmitting means in such a way as to cause the driven member to rotate with alternately and gradually increasin and decreasing speed during every fee -motion of said grip )er supporting members, the speed rising rom zero to a predetermined maximum and falling from this to zero; and means to transmit positively motion from the said driven member to the gripper supporting members.
3. An automatic feeding and dischargingdevice for printing-presses, especially platen printing-presses, comprising, in combination, gripper supporting members arranged for intermittent rotation on an axle located at right angles with respect to the plane of the work-piece; a rotary driving member and means to rotate it with uniform speed; another rota member arranged to be driven by said drlving member; motion-transmitting means projecting forth laterally from said driving member; guide-ways provided in a side of the driven member and being adapted to be engaged by said motiontransmitting means, these latter being adapted to move along in said guide-ways alternately inwards and outwards; and means to transmit ositively motion from the said driven mem er to the gripper supporting members.
4. An automatic feeding and dischargingdevice for printing-presses, especially platen printing-presses, comprlsing, 1n com-' bination, gripper supporting members arranged for intermittent rotation on an axle located at right angles with respect to the I plane of .the work-piece; a rotary driving member and 'means to rotate it with uniform speed; another rotary member arranged to be, driven by said driving member; a plurality of motion-transmitting means projecting forth laterall from said driving member; a plurality 0 practically radial guide-ways provided in a side of the driven member and-being adapted to be engaged successively by the successive motion-transmitting means, these latter being adapted to be moved along in said guide-ways alternately inwards and outwards and thereby to rotate said driven member with a speed increasing from zero to a predetermined maximum, and decreasing from this maximum to zero; and means to transmit positivel motion from the said driven member to t e gripper supporting members.
5. An automatic feeding and dischargingdevice for printing-presses especially platen printing-presses, comprlsing, in combination, gripper supporting members arranged for intermittent rotation on an axle located at right angles with respect to the plane of the work-piece; a rotary driving member and means to rotate it with uniform speed; another rotary member arranged to be driven by said driving member with alternately and gradually increasing and decreasing speed during every feed-- motion of said gripper supporting members; means to transmit positively motion from said driven member to the gripper supporting members; and a checking device controlled by the printing-press and adapted to check the gripper supporting members'in their position of rest.
6. An automatic feeding and dischargingdevice for printing-presses, especially platen printing-presses, comprising, in combination, gripper supporting members arranged for intermittent rotation on an axle located at right angles with respect to the plane of the work-piece; a rotary driving member and means to rotate it with uniform speed; another rotary member arranged to be driven by said driving member with alternately and gradually increasing and descreasing speed during every feedmotion of said gripper supporting members; means to transmit positively motion device adapted to check the gripper supporting members and the, actuating means connected positively with them in the position of rest of the saidgripper supporting members.
7. Anautomatic feeding and discharging device for printing-presses, especially platen printing-presses, comprising, in combination, gripper, supporting members arranged for intermittent rotation on an axle located at right angles with respect to the plane ofthe work-piece; a rotary driving member'and means to rotate it with uniform speed; another rotary member arranged to be drivenby said driving member; motiontransmitting means provided at the driving member, and motion-receiving means provided at said driven member and being adapted to be engaged by said motion-transmitting means .in such a way as to cause the driven member to rotate with alternately and gradually increasing and decreasing speed during every feed-motion of said gripper supporting members, the speed rising from zero to a predetermmed maximum and falling from this .to zero; and a checking device controlled b the printingpress and adapted to check t e gripper supporting members in their position of rest.
8. An automatic feeding and dischargingfor printing-presses, especially platen printing-presses, comprising, in combination, gripper supporting members arranged for intermittent rotation on an axle located at ri ht angles with respect to the plane of worE-piece; a rotary driving member and means to rotate it with uniform speed; another rotary member arranged to be driven by said driving'member; a plurality .of motion-transmitting means projecting forth laterally from said driving member; a plurality of practically radial guide-ways provided in a side of the driven member and being adapted to be engaged successively by the successive motion-transmitting means, these latter being adapted maximum, and decreasing from this maximum to zero; means to transmit positively motion from the said driven member to the grip er supporting members; and a checking evice controlled by the printing, press and adapted to check the gripper-supporting members and the actuating means connected positively with them in the position gf rest of the sad gripper supporting memers.
