EXTENSION TABLE.
Application filed September 17, 1925. Serial No. 56,810.
This invention relates to extensible tables and has particular reference to devices of that general character having means for facilitating the insertion or removal of an extra leaf into thetable'top.
Among the objects of this invention is 'to provide an extensible table having novel means for facilitating the insertion of a leaf into the table top, thus eliminating to a large extentthe labor which is generally involved.
Another object of this invention is to provide an extensible table having means for retaining an extra leaf or leaves within the table structure .and in convenient pos1t1on to be raised into the plane of the top of the table; when the same is extended, means be- I ing provided for automatically raising and guiding a leaf for insertion into the table top and also for retaining the end portions of the table top automatically in engagement with each other and in oo-operation with said leaf to provide a strong and readily operativefistructure. With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view showing the table with the leaf disposedbeneath the table top.

V I I Referring now more specifically to the drawings, I show my extensible table as comprising a top having the end members or the line 55 of portions and a supporting structure for V the table comprising the legs 11 and the reenforcing braces 12. A leaf 13 is provided which has co-operation with the table top in the usual manner when the table is extended. Said leaf is provided with holes 14 along the opposite side edges thereof offset with respect to each other to receive the pins 15 which extend from the end portions of the table top and serve to retain the leaf reliably in the plane of the top of the table and to insure a perfectly smooth and uniform surface. Said leaf is likewise provided with a plurality of extending portions16 secured at the ends of the leaf and along opposite sideedges, thus making four in all, said projections being secured to the underside of said leaf as by means of the screws 17 and in such manner as to be rotatable about said screws. Said projections are arranged to contact the underside of the end portions 10 of the table top, thus serving the function of a limiting or stop means to limit the upward movement of the leaf under the actuation'of automatic means to be described hereinafter and retain the same in position at predetermined relavided extending downward from said leaf and into holes 19 in the cross beams 20 of the supporting structure of the table, each pin 18 serving 'to insure thatthe leaf will move upward or downward in constant parallelism to the top of the table, thus serving in conjunction with the projections 16 to insure that the leaf will seat properly and with the least amount of trouble when the table is being extended. The guide pin 18 is provided at its lower end with a head 18 which abuts against the underside of the cross beam 20 and serves likewise to limit the upward movement of the leaf as set forth hereinbefore.
The end members 10 of the table top have r table wherein actuating means may be received for facilitating the operation of said leaf when the same is raised or lowered. Thus said dove-tail joints includethe members 21 which are fixed to the ends 10 and are slidable in the cross beams 20. Said cross beams are recessed at 22 coincident with the position of the leaf 13 so as to receive the leaf within said recess and support the same beneath the top of the table. My invention provides means for automatically causing the members to move toward each other into engagement, thus preventing the table from opening up or dis engaging accidentally and eliminating the necessity of any positive locking means which would require manual operation. re specifically, I provide means such as springs 23 which have engagement with anchor members such as beams and beams 25. The beams 2i are secured part of the supporting structure of the table and the ends 10 of the table top are slidable thcreover, while the beams are rigidly fastened to said end members 10. In this way the s 'irings are operative under tension to cause the end members to move toward each other. In this way the top of the table whether in collapsed or extended position is readily maintained as a strong unitary structure.
To add to the convenience in extending the table I provide lifting mechanism including a member 26 which is hinged to a beam 2-]: as by means of the hinge 27 and carries a bracket. 28 to which is pivoted an anchor member 29 carrying a plate 30. when the member 26 is moved up or down the plate 30 is effective for raising or lowering the leaf. Means is provided for automatically causing the movable or operating member 26 to move constantly upward or generally in such manner as to cause tire leaf to move upwardly. is a specific arrangement I provide a spring 31 which is secured at one end of said movable member and at the other end to a beam 2t as within the recess 32 thereof. Likewise a catch 33 is provided pivoted to the supporting structure as by means of a screw 3-1- and notched at 35 to engage over the movable member when the same is depressed as shown in F 1 and against the tension of the spring 31.
The mode of operation of my invention is as follows: In order to extend the table I release the catch 33. thus causing the actuating member to bear upwardly by means ofthe plate 30 and intermediate mechanism against the underside of the leaf 13. The end members 10 of the table top are then moved apart by any suitable means such as manual force against the springs 23, the leaf 13 being then automatically seated as described hereinbefore. Upon release of the end members 10 the springs 23 are operative to cause said end members to locl; in against the leaf by means of the dowel pins. hen, however, it is desired to collapse the table the actuating member is locked in inoperative position by means of the catch 33. The end members 10 are then drawn apart, thus causing the leaf 13 to drop by its own weight into the recess 22 of the cross beams 20. ii hcn the end members 10 are again released from manual operation the s rings draw the same together and into engagement with each other as shown in Fig. 1 and with the end leaf concealed beneath the table top.
I claim:
1. In an extension table, the combination with a supporting structure, of a table top for the structure having two movable end portions and a leaf therebetween removable from the plane of the table top to permit said end portions to move together, means operative between said leaf and said end portions to retain said leaf against unintended movement from the plane of the top, means normally urging said end portions toward each other to retain said leaf inengagement therewith when positioned in the plane of the table top, means to retain the leaf beneath the end portions of the table top when the leaf is removed and the end portions are engaged with each other, and lifting means for automatically raising said leaf into position to be received between said end portions, said lifting means including a pivoted lever, a bracket on the lever, and a plate pivotally mounted on the bracket to raise the leaf as the lever is moved upward.
2. An extension table comprising a supporting structure, an extensible table top having a plurality of end port-ions and a leaf arranged to be received therebetween, and operating means for automatically raising said leaf to be received between said end portions to form a plane table top of increased size, and to retain said leaf against unintended movement from the plane of said top, said leaf including a lever, :r bracket on the lever, aplate pivotally mounted on the bracket to raise the leaf as the lever is moved upward, and a spring arranged to move the lever upward.
