LUBRICATING MEA1\TS.
Application fi1ed March 18, 1925.
Tbis invention relates t0 improvements in lubricating means and more particularly to sncb as are adapted for use and in cooperation with canning apparatus.
In certain canning apparatns, a pocketed carrier is provided and adapted to rotate witbin a casing, the pockets of said carrier forming vacnnm filling cbambers in wbicb cans or containers are filled witb liqnid, usually syrnp. Sucb apparatus is disclosed in my copending applicat1ons Scrial Nos. 582,712 and 734,224. It 1S important that the free rotation of the rotary pocketed carrier sball not be interrupted or interfered witb, bnt it may sometimes happen tbat spilled s vrup may find its way to the hearing surface between the carrier and its casing and interfere Witb the free movement of the carrier. Tbe object of my present invention is to provide simpleand eflicient means whereloy t be outer loearing surface of the rotary carrier may be kept clean and lubricated.
Vith tbis object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of con struction and combinations of parts as bereinafter set: fortb and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is a view partially in plan and partially in section illustrating an applica tion of my invention,
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the lubricator;
Figures 3 to 8 are views illnstrating details, and
Figure 9 is a view in section on the line 99 of Fignre 2.
In Figure 1 of the drawing is shown a fragmentary part of the can filling mechanism of canning apparatus said mechanism including a casing 1 and a rotary pocketed carrier 2, the pockets of wbicb form liquid filling chambers, and near the inlet opening 3 of the casing, a rotary feeding device 4 is located for moving cans tbrough tbe opening 3 to the pockets of the rotary carrier, all as fully disclosed in my copending applications bereinloefore identified.
Tbe feeding device 4 is carried loy a vertical sbaft 5 provided with a gear 6 to whicb motion is applied from snitable driving mechanism, and tbis sarne shaft 5 carries my improved lubrittating device 8.
In constructing the lubricating device, a
frame 9 is monnted on the feeder 4 and in cludestwo parallel frame plates 10 and 11 spaced apart and the plate 11 is provided with a central elongated enlargement 12 entering a recess 12 in the plate 10 and l1aving an opening 13 tbrougb the same, the frame plates being secnred together by means oi bolts 14 passing tbrough the enlargement 12 on one of said plates and entering the otber plate.
Holders 15 and 16 baving gnide ribs 17, 18 are movable between the frame plates 10, 11 at respective sides of the enlarge ment 12. The bolders 15 and 16 carry felt wipers 19, 20, and said bolders are normally pressed outwardly by means of a spring 21 passing tbrougb tbe opening 13. Tbe movements of the bolders and the wipers car riedtbereloy are li1nited loy bolts 22, 22 carried by the frame 9 and passing tbrough enlarged boles 23, 23, in said bolders as clearly sbown in Figures 2 and 9.
Tbe bolder 15 carries a receptacle 24 ror lubricant, and tbis receptacle discbarges lubricant (water or oil), tbrougb ducts 25, 26 to the felt wiper 19, and the bolder 16 car ries a lnbricant receptacle 27 (made annular in form and encircling the receptacle 24) is movably mounted on the bolder 15 and is adapted to discbarge lubricant, tbrougb ducts 28, 29 to the wiper 20.
It is apparent tbat as the lubricator and. the pocketed carrier rotate as indicated by the arrows in Figure 1, the wipers, projecting throngb the entrance opening 3 in the casing 1, will wipe and lubricate tbe onter face of the rotating carrier.
Varions cbanges migbt be made in the details;of construction of my invention withont departing from the spirit of the latter or limiting its scope and bence I do not wish to restrict m vself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention wbat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In lubricating means, the combination with a frame, of bolders movably mounted tberein, wipers carried lo v said bolders, spring n1eans between said bolders exerting outward pressure against the same, lubricant supply means, and means for conducting lubricant trom said lnbricant supply means to said wipers.
2. In lubricatirig means, the combination
