ROLLER-BEARIN G CAGE.
Application filed November 14. 1921.
The invention relates to cages for roller bearings and has for its main object to provide a cage with spacers for the rolls which permit of free lubrication of the rolls and comprise spaced plates engageable with the rolls for relatively short portions of their lengths and cross bars connecting these plates. Other objects of the invention reside in the novel features of construction as more fully hereinafter set forth.

1 and 2 are the spaced heads of the roller bearing cage connected by the shouldered tie bars 3 extending therebetween. 4 are the rolls having the reduced pivot portions 5 at their ends extending through apertures in the heads 1 and 2, these apertures being of sufliciently greater diameter than the pivot portions to permit of limited relative movement of the rolls and heads. Each roll has the main cylindrical portion 6 and the enlargement 7 at one end thereof having the oppositely inclined portions 8 and 9 forming bearing surfaces for taking care of end thrusts in opposite directions. The surfaces of the main cylindrical portion and of the inclined bearing portions extend beyond the inner and outer peripheries of the cages and engaging corresponding surfaces in the inner and outer race members 10 and 11 respectively. v
To properly space the rolls 4 and to hold the same in parallelism and at the same time to permit of free lubrication of the rolls, there are the spacers12 which have the end plates 13 extending transversely of the rolls and provided with the concave edges 14 conforming substantially to the curvature of and engaging the main cylindrical portions 6 of the rolls. These end plates have the apertures 15 through which the tie bars 3 pass and are connected by the cross bars 16 0 extending therebetween and preferably integral therewith, the cross bars being spaced an appreciable distance from the surfaces of the main portions of the rolls, as well as the Serial No. 514,842.

With this arrangement, it is seen that the rolls are spaced by members which may be readily formed as by being stamped out and that these members engage the rolls for only relat ve short portions of their lengths, the remalnder of the lengths of the rolls being exposed to permit of lubricant freely reach- 1ng their surfaces.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a roller bearing cage, the combination with spaced heads, of tie bars extending therebetween, and spacers for the rolls rotatively secured to said spaced head, having spacer plates extending transversely of their axes and engageable with relatively short portions thereof, and cross bars spaced from the rolls and secured to said spacer plates for connecting the same.
2. In a roller bearing cage, the combination with spaced heads, of tie bars extending therebetween, and spacers rotatably mounted upon said tie bars and comprising spacer plates extending transversely of the rolls and engageable with the same, and cross bars spaced from the rolls and secured to said plates for connecting the same.
,3. In a roller bearing cage, the combination with spaced heads, of tie bars extending therebetween, and spacers for the rolls rotatably mounted upon said tie bars and comprising spacer plates extending trans versely of the rolls and engageable therewith, and cross bars spaced from the rolls and integral with said plates.
4. In a roller bearing cage, the combination with spaced heads, of tie bars extending therebetween, rolls extending between said heads intermediate said tie bars and having enlargements, spacers for said rolls mounted upon said tie bars and comprising spacer plates extending transversely of the rolls and engageable with the same near their enlargements and near one of said heads, and cross bars extending longitudinally of and spaced from the rolls and connecting said spacer plates.
5. In a roller bearing cage, the combination with spaced heads, of tie bars extending therebetween and spacers mounted on said tie bars comprising a cross member extending longitudinally of said tie bars and integral transversely extending end portions apertured to receive said tie lrars, said transverse end portions being formed with con- Cave bearing surfaces engageahle with the rolls and said cross members being spawud from the rolls and from said tie rods.
