GUN MOUNT.

provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a gun mount which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, conveniently ad usted to arrange the gun in the desired position for firing, H1011 oughly eflicient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to set up.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention oonsistsof the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a gun mount, in accordance with this invention, showing the adaptation therewith of the gun.

Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a base upon which is mounted a turntable 2 provided on its upper face with a circular gear rack 3. Suitable bearings 4 are interposed between the turn-table 2 and the base 1. The reference character 5 denotes a support on a deck of a vessel upon which the base 1 is secured. As illustrated the base 1 is arranged forwardly on the sup port or deck 5, of an observation room 6 and from the interior thereof the mount is adjusted to position the gun 7 at the desired angle with respect to a vertical and a horizontal axis whereby the gun will be properly trained for firing purposes.
The gun 7 is of a repeater type and formed with a pair of oppositely extending trunnions 8, 9 which are journaled in the upper end of an inverted U-shaped supporting frame 10 fixedly secured to the turn-table 2. Bearing members 11 are mounted at the upper end of the arms of the frame 10 for the trunnions' 8 and 9. The trunnion 9 is provided with a gear wheel 12 which is arranged between one of the arms of the frame 10 and the gun 7. The gear 12 is positioned 1n proximity to one of the arms oft-he frame 10 and such arm is indicated at '13 and which has journaled therein below the gear wheel 12, a shaft 14, provided at its inner end with a pinion 15 which meshes with the gear 12. Stop collars 16 are carried by the shaft 14. The outerend of the shaft 14 is provided with a bevelled gear 17 spaced a substantial distance from the arm 13 of the frame 10 and secured to said arm 10 and extending, outwardly therefrom is a bearing bracket 18 for the shaft 14. Secured to the arm 13, of the frame 10, below the bearin bracket 18, is a superposed spaced pair of bearing brackets 19 and 20.
Extending upwardly through the outer ends of the brackets 19 and 20 is a vertically disposed shaft 21, provided at its upper end with a bevelled gear 22, which meshes with the bevelled gear 17. The hub 23 0f the gear 22 seats upon the top of the bracket 19, which is arranged in proximity to the bracket 18. The lower end of the shaft 21, below the bracket 20 is provided with a pinion 24, having its hub abutting against the lower face of the bracket 20. The hubs 23 and 25 prevent vertical movement of the shaft 21 relative to the brackets 19 and 20. Secured to the outer face of the arm 13, of the frame 10, below the bracket 20, is a pair of outwardly projecting and oppositely inclined suspension arms 26, 27 for slidably supporting a shiftable actuating member referred to generally by the reference character 28. The member 28 consists of a segmental shaped bar 29 provided on its bottom with a toothed rack 30 and on its inner edge with a toothed rack 31. The pinion 24 meshes with the rack 31 whereby when the member 28 is bodily shifted in either direction the shaft 21 will be revolved, and which will revolve the shaft 14, owing to the gear connections 17 and 22. When the shaft 14 is revolved, the pinion 15 is carried therewith, and as the latter meshes with the gear 12 the trunnion 9 will be shifted for the purpose of 5 adjusting the gun 7 in an angular direction with respect to its horizontal axis. The turn-table 2 is revolved for the purpose of angularly adjusting the gun 7 with respect to its vertical axis,by a bevelled gear 32 which meshes with the bevelled rack 3 formed on the turn-table 2. J ournaled in a pair of supporting standards j33iis.a driven shaft 34, and which has its outer end provided with a bevelled pinion 35. Bodily shiftable uponthe shaft 34,'that is 'to'say lengthwise of thealatter, as well as adapted to revolve therewith when clutched with the shaft 34, is thebevelled gear 32 and a gear lwheel'36. The gears 32 .and 36 are carried by aclutching mechanism 37, operated by a shifting mechanism 38 therefor, which is ipivotally mounted on the standards 39 and 40 and extends into the observation room 6 so that said'shifting mechanism can be operated from such 'room andwhen operated in one direction couplingrthe "gear wheel 32 with the shaft 34: an'd;further shifting the gear wheel 32to engageiwith'the rack 3 so that when thesha ft 34 is operated the turntable 2 will be revolved. When the shifting mechanism 38 is operated in the other direction the gear-wheel 36 is moved to mesh with the rack 30 of the member 28 and on the o1 eration of the shaft 34the gear wheel 36 meshing with the rack 30 will shift the ele- ,ment 28 and-on the shift of the latter the rack 31 engaging with the pinion 24 will operate the shaft 21. The suspension arms 26 and 27 have their outer endformed to support and toprovide for the shifting of the element *28 therethrough. Any suitable means can be employed to: prevent the back rotation of the. turn-table 2, and such means is indicated at 41 and can consist of a dog shiftable-to engage'the rack 3-to prevent back rotation thereof. a

The shaft 34 is driven through the medium of-an operating shaft 53, which is mounted in standards 54, 55 secured to the support or deck 5. The shaft 53 is disposed at right angles with respect to the shaft 34 and has its outer end provided with a bevelled pinion 56, which meshes with the bevelled pinion 35 formed on the outer end of the shaft 34. The shaft 53 extends into the observation room 6 and carries an operating handle'57 therefor. It wlll be said that any suitable means can be employed to operate the shaft 53, and this statement also applies to-theshaft 49. It will befurthermore statedthat the clutch mechanismand its shifting means therefor can be of any suitable arrangement.
It is thought the many advantages of a gunmount, in accordance with this invention, can'be readily understood in view of the fact that the gun can be conveniently adjusted to various inclinations with respect to a horizontal axis and also to various inclinations with respect to a vertical axis, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described,
yetit is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
lVhat I claim is 1. A gun mount comprising a turn-table,
:a-frame bodilyishiftable therewith and pivotally supporting the trunnions of the gun, a gear wheel carried by one of the gun trunnions, a bodily shiftable actuating-member provided withla pair .of racks disposed at an angle to each other, means secured to said frame for slidablysupporting said member, means for shifting said turn-table to adjust the gun on a vertical axis, 'meansengaging with one of said racks for shifting said member, means carried by the frame and engaging with said gear and operated from the other rack of said member for adjusting the gun on a horizontal axis, and a common operating means: for the means for shifting saidanembe-r and the means for shifting the turn-table;
