' Application filed August 17, 1925." Serial No. 50,781.
This invention relates to improvements in hooks for use upon motor vehicle skid chains and the like and which contemplates the provision of a plate having anotched end portion for receiving the loops of a side chain and having a correspondingly shaped latch plate hinged to its outer end and whenfold ed to receive therein the inner end of the latch plate'for rigidly holding the entire hook in a locked position for eliminating the displacement of aside chainlink therein.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of my invention shown in a lockedposit-ion. Figure 2 is a side elevation showing the latch plate open.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corre'-- sponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a relatively flat plate forming an abutment or shoulder 11 adjacent its forward end from which extends a locking platej 12' having a plurality of reversely extending notched portions 13 therein, the purpose of which will be presently apparent. Pivoted as at 14 to therear end portion of the plate 10 is an end link 15 of a chain,'not shown,
while washers 16 and 17, arranged upon the rear and forward end portions of the plate 10, include elongated slots 18'therein for facilitating their sliding movement upon the said plate 10 and eliminating any rotation thereon. Encircling the plate 10 and having I its respective end portion engaging the corresponding inner side of the washers 16 and 17 respectively and holding the washer 17 against the abutment or shoulder 11 is a compression spring 19, the purpose of which will be presently apparent.
*means for-rigidly holding the opposing end link20 of the chain mentioned, within the-re- In order to provide versely dispos'ednotched portions 13 of the locking plate .12, I provide a latch plate 21 havingits forward end pivoted as at 22 to the corresponding end portion of the locking'plate 12and which further includes' 'a plurality'of reversely disposed notched portions 23 upon its under side for registration with the notched portions 13 in the locking plate 12 when swung into the positions as clearly illustrated in Figure l of the drawmgs.
The outer free end of the latch plate,
21 includes an abutment or shoulder 24 'adi I jacent its outer end while its remaining links termlnatlng 1n a reduced extension 25 which when in a locked position lies flush with the outer sideof the plate 10 within the inclosure defined by the compression spring 19 and extending throughthe elongated: slotted portion 18 in the washer 17 whereby the reversely disposed notched portions 13 and 23 arebrought into registrationand forming such inclosures for the end link 20 of the chain, not shown, as will not permit any accidental displacement of the same therein. i
In the mode of operation of the present invention it is clearly apparent and manifest that the end link 20 may be arranged in any one'of a plurality of their reversely' disposed notched portions :23 in' -theflatch plate 21 V and when swung rearwardly therewith into" the position as clearly illustrated in Figure l 1 of the drawing, it will be noted. that the said inner looped end of the link 20'will be completely inclosed between the reversely disposednotchedi portions 23 inthe latch V 1 plate 21 and notches 13 in the locking plate 12 after which the washer 17 is moved rearwardly upon the plate 10 against the tension of the compression spring 19 in -allow' ing ample. and suflicient room for the reduced extension 25 of the latch plate 21'to sw1ng rearwardly and lie ,flush against one side of r the plate 10 after which the washer 17 is released and the reduced extension 25' received within the elongated'slot 18 in the washer 17 and held rigidly. in a locked posit on.
The invention is susceptible ofvarious 1 changes in its form, proportions andminor details of construction, .and the right isherein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended. claim.
Having thus described my invention what i I A chain 'hook for use upon side chains... 1 Comprising'a relatively flat plate havmg'a' is claimedis:
V 11v 1,600,916 i chain end pivoted to one end thereof, an the reduced extension of the latching plate,
enlarged locking plate provided upon the and a compression spring encircling the flat forward end of the flat plate and including plate, and having its opposite end portion reversely disposed notched portions upon its engaging in the corresponding inner sides upper side, a correspondingly shaped latch of the washer for rigidly holding the reduced plate pivoted to the forward end of the lock: extension of the latch plate in a locked posiing plate, a reduced extension on the inner tion upon the flat plate. free end of the latch plate,ra pair ofwashers In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. including elongated slots centrally thereof ii r arranged upon the flat plate and receiving I JAMESHLWEBBER.
