A splash board 12 is slidably mounted on bolts 13 carried by the box 1 1 containing the cross needles D. The machine illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 is of the type 'in'which the plate I is, by means of rods 27 (Fig. 1), moved to the left by treadle or like mechanism actuated by the operator in charge of the punching machine, thereby permitting the needles E which are not caught in the grid G to move in a like direction to operate. the selecting needles in thejselecting needle box. lVhen the punches heretofore mentioned have been caught in the hand plate, the plate I (Fig. 8) is moved to the right to itsnormal position. On the return movement the notch 22 coming in contact with the arm 17 turns same and thereby also thespindle 16 and cam members 18 which latter, acting on the'splash board, moves same inwardly, thereby returning the cross needles .to their normal position. Before the end of the return stroke the arm 21 coacts with the pin 24 which results in the notch 22 being freed from the arm 17 This permits the splash board 12 to be moved outwards under the action of the springs 13 so thatthe cross needles can be again actu-- ated.
The chain dotted lines in Figure 5 indicate --the position of the trip mechanism just before the notch 22 is freed from the arm 17 and the full lines indicate the normal position of the mechanism. r
Preferably a hand lever 27 is also rigidly V secured to the spindle 16. By moving this lever as indicated'bythe arrow the operator can immediately return all cross needles to their normal position should he find an error has been committed in operating the keys 1.
The mechanism indicated in Figure 6 is substantially similar to that in Figure 5 with the exception that the notched arm 22 is carried by a bracket 29 secured to the connecting rod 26. This arrangement is suitable for use in the automatic type of punching machine in which the punches are normally prevented from moving by short spindles secured to the string needles.
Said connecting rod 26 is connected to the grid G and punching machine in such manncr that when it is moved to the left (the pivoted arm 21 then overriding the arm 17) the grid is moved to the right to operate the said short spindles.
After the card has been punched said rod is movedto the right returning the grid to its normal position and also causin'g the notch 22 to co-act with the arm 17 and thereby return the cross needles as herein before described. v
Also in such automatic machines of the type hereinabove set forth, I preferably provide means whereby, when a number of repeats are required to be punched, the grid Gr (Fig. 8) is kept in its outer position, i. e.,

The arm 17 is preferably provided with an extension 17*, see Figure 2, which pro jects below the arm 21. The latter always rests 011 and is guided by said extension-dun ing its reciprocatory movement.

Preferably the other end of said cross needles are provided with ferrules d1 which the language thereof, when read in connection with the prior art, regardless of the details and functions mentioned-in'the description or illustrated in the drawings.
lVhat I claim is 2- 1. In apparatus of the type set forth, the
