Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: To fold the corners of the hem folds to form a mitered joint therebetween; to mechanically dispose the surplus material at the junction of the hem edges of a garment prior to folding said edges; and to produce at the junction of hem edges, a smooth and even thickness of material. The immediate purpose of the present invention is to provide mechanical means to fold the hem edges of collars for mens wear, and particularly the hem edges of collars known as semi-soft collars. The blanks or shapes from which the oollars'are made are out in accordance with any desired method formingcorners in accordance with the design of the garment as shown substantially in Figure 6 of the drawings. In subsequent operationof the machine,

When the operation is complete, the corner of the garment will bev sections 18 operate upon the garment when placed in the die 15 to curl the corner eX- tension of the garment, indicated in the drawings by the numeral 19, forward. The
corner extension 19 'of the garment bridgesbetween the overhanging sections 18 and does not enter between the extensions 18 or into the corner 17 thereof. This position is shown best in Figure 3 of the drawings.
As shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, the fabric forming the garment 20 is so disposed that the marginal edges rest on the rails 21, while the portion 19 is upstanding and bridges across and below the gap formed by the extensions 18.
When now the male die is moved toward the die 15, the cornerof the forming die 22 enters between the extensions 18. of the cor ner block 16. The corner portion 19 of the garment is engaged and is depressed. The corner portion 19 of the garment 20 is thus carried into the die 15 below the forming plate 22 of the male die, while the hem edges 23 are left upstanding, as seen best in Figure 4- of the drawings. The plate 22 being now at rest, the folding members 24 of the edge folding machine are moved over the forming plate 22 toward the center of the die 15, thereby turning down the hem edges 23, as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings.
As explained fully in the application [0 which cross reference is above made, the pressure necessary to permanently crease the material to retain the hem edges in position is set or pressed by the bed of the die 15, lifting to exert the necessary pressure upon the material to set or crease it permanently. I
When the members 24 are retracted, the die and the forming plate 22 thereof, lift the garment out of the die 15 so that the operator can immediately and conveniently vextract the garment from the plate 22.
It will now be found that the corner for the shaping and folding of which the 'present invention is particularly designed,
has been folded so that the turned ends of the hem edges meet in mitered arrangement and the material is disposed evenly at both sides of the mitered joint thus formed.
a female die, means at the corner of said female die for moving the corner portion of the garment into the path of a forming die, means including a forming die for overturning said corner portion and upturning the hem edges on either side thereof, and means for folding saidhem edges overon said overturned corner portion.
2. A mechanism for making a corner fold on a garment,comprising in combination, a female die, a male die adapted to cooperate therewith, and a block disposed at the corner of said female die and adapted to hold the corner portion of the garment over the main portion of the female die so that it will be engaged and overturned by said male die. V
3. The combination as claimed in claim 2 in which said block is provided with. overhanging sections radiating from the inner corner thereof.
4. A collar folding machine comprising in combination, a female collar shaping die,
a block disposed at the corner of said female die and adapted to hold the corner portion of the collar over themain portion of the female die, a male forming plate shaped in accordance with the collar and having a corner adapted to engage and overturn the corner portion of the collar held by said block said female die having marginal rails adapted to cooperate with the male die to turn the hem edges into an upstanding position when the male die enters the female die and overturns said corner portion of the collar, and means for folding said hem edges over on said overturned corner portion.
