JACK.
' Application mcd January zo, 192e. serial No. 82,537. p
My said invention relates to a jack suc as is-uscd for lifting automobiles and the like and it is an object of my invention t provide qulckly acting mean-s for raising n and lowering heavy ob]ects.
A further object of my inventionv is to provide quickly acting means for pos'tioning the lifting elements of the jack.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
le which are made a art hereof, and onwhich similar reference c aracters indicate similar parte?, i,
Figure 1 is a side` elevation of. my device.A Figure 2, a plan. Figure 3,'a section on 2, and
Figure 4,a fragment of the invention. In' the drawings reference characters 1() indicate intermediate side members of the frame of the jack, said frame carrylng a lifting device '11 vby means of a lever 12 fulcrumed at 13 on front frame members 14 and pivotally connected at 15 to rod 16.
Links 17 are pivotally connected at one end to the lifting device and at the vother end to frame members 14, as indicated at 18.
The rod 16 -is threaded at its rear end for engagement with an internal thread on a nut 19 provided with peripheral teeth to form a ratchet bearing at its rearside 'against a block 20, which serves 'as a support for the ratchet nut.l The block is supported by trunnions indicated at 21, which trunnions are mounted for limited oscillation in bearings on the side frame members and said block is provided with a ball-thrust bearing (not shown) against which a collar 15 line 3--3 of Figure o; a modified form on thezratchet bears for the vpurpose of re i ducing friction.n Q A pair of oppositely facing inwardly-d1- rected pawls 22 are arranged lfor engagement with the ratchet, these pawls being spring pressed toward the ratchet and being slidable in bearings 23 fixed to hand levers 26 hereinafter described. The bearings are notched at opposite sides adjacent their ends toreceive pms 24 on the shafts of the pawls, which shafts are also provlded a vwith hand-grips 25, by means of which the..
.pawls may be withdrawn in directions radial to the ratchet and by turningthe shafts until the pins 24 .are out of enga ement with Atheir` notches, the pawls may held out y of engagement with the ratchet by the pms .wardencLa shaft 32 is ixed in the front `located directly rearwardly of the side frame bearing against the outer rims of the bearings and qthus holding the pawls away from the ratchets. Itis to benoted here' thatv the notches are wider than the pins 24, thus permitting a limited rocking movement, whereby the active faces of the pawlsmay remain in engagement with the teeth cf the ratchet throughout the stroke of the 'pawls,` as hereinafter referred to.I It will be evident, alsothat the pawls are reversible by iirzgmg the hand-grips 25fthrough arcs of 'F or operatingthe ratchet nut to move the rod lengthwise'of the jack, and thus raise or lower the lifter 11 the device of my invention' is providedwith a pair of handlevers 26 unitedat their rear ends by a cross bar (not shown) for engagement by the hand of the operator, torock the lhand-levers up and down about their pivots 27 on the rear'set of side frame members shoi's'n at 34. This, as will be obvious, causes'the pawls to engage' alternately withvthe ratchet` nut for rotating it, thus rendering the ratchetdouble acting. By retracting both the ypawls from `the rat( het nut and so rendering it inoperative the nut maybe turned by' lian-d to bring-the 10d 16'and the lifter rapidly to any desired positiomafter which the pawls may be ree-engaged4 with the ratchet. The frame of the jack is provided near the rear with `brackets 29 carrying-wheels 30 which are m'unted after the manner of castersin vertical' bearings 31. At the forside members, said shaftcarrying wheels 33 at its outer ends forv supportingthe front end .of the jack. 'In the present embodiment of the .invention the hand levers 26 are members 10, thc pivots 27 being on the auxiliary side frame members 34,v which are bolted to the members 10 by the same bolts 'which secure the brackets 29 in place. A
bridge member 35 may be secured to the aux- Je' iliary members 34. or may be made integral as preferred,'sai d bridge memberfserving to" hold .the sides of thex frame in spaced relation. v
' One advantage of the device thus far described resides in the fact that it may be` very quickly taken apart and re-a'ssembled. Fo lthis purpose a pin 36 extends through a socket '37 pivo'ted at lto the lever 12 and through the end of the rod 16 in said socket.
Thispin is held in place merely by friction and can readily be forcedI out of place.
Thereupon the rod can be turned to remove it from the ratchet nut and the thrust block and when the rod has been-removed Figure 4: shows a modified frm of the\ invention, only so much being` shown as is lil) essential to an understanding thereof. In this form of the invention the socket member 38 is similar to socket member 37 in Figure 1, but has a long thread of rather steep pitch coacting with a like thread on rod 39, these threads being right-hand. A unit 40 on the rod 39 has a left-hand thread coacting with a-likef thread on said rod 39, and a ratchet 41 is fast" to the rod. Pavvls (not shown) are actuated to cause rotation of the rod and its operation'is like that of the first form except for the reversely-acting screw threads, whichvimpart a more rapid rota.- `tion to the rod and thus accelerate the speed of the movement of the parts, as will be readily understood.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit 'of the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described inthe specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said inuntion, what I claim as new and desirel to .heure by Letters Patent, is
l. A jack comprising a frame, a lifting device at one end thereof, parallel motion mechanism for said lifting device, a threaded rod movable lengt wise of the frame for operating said paral el motion mechanism, a ratchet having internal threads engaging the threads of the rod, hand levers on the frame rearwardly from the ratchet, and oppositely acting reversible pawls on the hand levers engagino' said ratchet, substantially as set acting face-s of the ratchet teeth, substan? tiall-y as set forth.
3. A jack comprising a frame, a lifting device in said frame, a threaded rod removable lengthwise of the frame for operating the lifting device, a. ratchet on said rod adapted to be rotated to move the rod longitudinally of the frame, said ratchet having teeth spaced about its circumference, a lever pivoted longitudinally of the frame and having arms disposed adjacent the periphery of said ratchet, a dog carried by said arms, said dog extending inwardly and engaefing said ratchet teeth, substantially as sett` forth.
In witness `whereof, I havel hereunto set.
my hand and seal at Washington, District of Columbia, this twentieth day of January, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-six- AXEL oNIELsEN. [1.. s.)
