This invention relates to a splining tool which is adapted for use in connection with shapers, planer-s and the like for cutt ng grooves for keys and for other work of hke character.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the cutter may be readily adjusted and secured in a variety of angular positions relative to the holder.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved cutter and holding means therefor, whereby clearance for the cutter is provided and proper location of the same relative to the work is insured at all times, as well as the .inaintena'nceof a standard width of cut at all times.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bit having two cutting edges whereby considerable time and trouble is avoided as the cutter may be used twice without regrinding.
Other objects and advantages of the 1111/611 tion relate to certain improved details of construction and improved methods of operation as will be more fully set forth in he detailed description to follow.

in detail my tool comprises a supporting arm or shank 7 adapted to be carried by the tool post of a shaper or planer. The shank 7 has upon its end an enlarged integral head 8 having a cylindrical extended portion 9. The head and extension have a bore 10 which is provided with broad shallow 1nternal threads 6, for the reception of a tool bar 11 provided with external threads 12 engaging the threads 6 of-the bore whereby the bar 11 is located at right angles to the shank 7 This bar is mounted for longitudinal and angular movement and may be clamped in any longitudinal or angular position by means of a binding p111 13 located in an opening 14 in the head 8 communicatmg with the bore 10 and at right angles thereto. The bolt comprises a body 15, a head 16 and a threaded end portion 17 upon which is a binding nut 18 engaging the washer 19 resting against the head. The side of the bolt is provided with an arcuate channel or recess 20 to receive the periphery of the rod 11. Tightening the clamping nut serves to bind the bolt and the rod in am desired position of the latter.
The tool bar is provided with an enlarged cylindrical head 22 having a diametrical opening 23 extending therethrough. The exterior of the head is recessed at one end of the bore to form a rectangular seat or recess 2 1. Loose in the opening 28 is a cylindrical'plug or bushing 26 provided atone end with a rectangular flange 27 registering 1n the recess 24: whereby the bushing is maintained in proper position and held against turning. The end face ofthe bushmg and the. flange are each convex to con form to the e-xterior contour of the head 22. The bushing is provided with a longitudinally disposed open channel or slot 31 flat at the bottom, as at 32 and diverging outwardly at its sides, as at 33. the slot 81 is a cutting tool 34 longer than the diameter of the head andconforming transversely with the shape of the slot having tapering side faces 36, so that its front face 37 is broader than its rear face 38 and parallel therewith. The end faces 39 of the cutting tool are inwardly inclined rearward ly from the broad cutting face 37. The head 22 has in its end a longitudinally disposed threaded aperture 41 extending to the channel 31 and adapted to receive a threaded binding screw 42 having a squared head 44: and which is adapted to clamp the bit against movement.
The tapering sides of the cutting tool insure it a firm seating in the bushing and provides a clearance for the same cutting. The removable character of the bushing 26 enables its being hardened-to resist wear by the endin reel.-
Tn the operation of my improved tool the shank 7 is placed in the tool post and clamped in position the tool bar 11 is threaded into the head 8 to the desired extent and so that the cutting tool 84 will occupy the proper angular position for cutting. The nut 18 is then tightened to clamp Slidable in ing of the tool and provide proper clear ance on both sides. The cutting tool having two cutting edges is reversible and one grinding only is therefore necessary for two cuttings such as would ordinarily necessitate two grindings.
What I claim is 1.7 In a device of the character described, a supporting arm provided with a threaded opening extending transversely therethrough, a tool bar provided with a transverse opening adjacent to one end thereof and having a threaded portion insertable within the threaded opening in said arm and ajustable both angularly and longitudinally. with respect to said arm, means for clamping said bar to said arm in any one of its adjusted positions, a cutting tool mounted in the transverse opening in said tool bar and adjustably longitudinally within the opening in said tool bar, and means for clamping said cutting tool to said tool bar in any one of its adjusted positions relative thereto;
2. In a device of the characted described, a supporting arnrprovided with a threaded opening extending transversely therethrough, a tool bar provided with a transverse opening adjacent to one end thereof and having the opposite end thereof threaded for insertion within the threaded opening in said arm, said tool bar being adjustable bot-h angularly and longitudinally with respect to said arm, means for clamping said tool bar in said arm in any one of its adjust-ed positions, a bushing mounted in the transverse opening in said tool bar and provided with a recess for the reception of a cutting tool, a cutting tool mounted in the recess in said bushing and extending transversely of said tool bar and adjustable longitudinally in said recess, and a clamping screw threaded in said tool bar and bearing against said cutting tool to clamp said cutting tool tov said tool bar in any one of its adjusted positions.
In a device of the character described, a tool bar provided with a transverse open ing extending therethrough and having an angular recess communicating with said opening, a bushing seated in said opening having an angular portion fitting in said recess and provided with a slot for the reception of a cutting tool, and a cutting tool supported by said bushing and mounted in thetransverse opening in said tool bar.

In a device of the characted described, a tool bar provided with a circular opening extending transversely therethrough and having an angular recess communicating with said opening, a bushing having a circularrportion fitting within said circular opening and an angular portion fitting within the angular recess and provided wit 1 a longitudinal slot for the reception of a cutting tool, and a cutting tool supported by said bushing and mounted in the transverse opening in said tool bar. 7
5. in a device of the character described. tool bar provided with an opening extending transversely therethrough, a bushing fitting in said opening and having a slot in one side thereof, the walls of said slot being inclined inwardly, and a cutting tool having the sides thereof inclined inwardly to tit within the slot in said bushing, a binding screw axially mounted in said tool bar and engaging said cutting tool for clampingsaid cutting tool within the slot in said bushing and holding said cutting tool and bushing in the opening in said tool bar.

In a device of the character described, a tool bar provided with a circular opening, a bushing fitting within the opening in said bar provided with an angular head and having a groove for the reception of a cutting tool, a cutting tool seated in said groove, and a shoulder on said tool bar adapted to engage the angular head of said bushing to hold the bushing and cutting tool against rotation.

In a device of the character described, a tool bar provided with a transverse circular opening, a bushing fitting within the opening in said bar provided with a groove for the reception of a cutting tool and having an angular head, a cutting tool seated in said bushing, a shoulder on said tool adapted to engage the angular head of said bushing, and a screw threaded in the end of said tool bar and engaging the cutting tool to hold said cutting tool and bushing in fixed position.
