This invention relates to skiving machines and is herein illustrated as embodied yin a machine for skiving the ends of strips of leather which are to be fastened together with the skived ends overlapping toform a length of belting in the manufacture of belts.

It is`essential that these scarfs be accurately cut since, when the two'scarfed ends'are overlapped and fastened together so as to join two strips, the thickness of the joint should be uniform with the thickness of the solid portions of the strips, and there should be no ragged edges on the surface at the joint.
According to one feature of the invention novel and improved means are provided for presenting to the skiving Cutter the ends of the strips of material which are to be skived. The illustrative machine comprises a pair of feed rolls open at one end to provide space for the passage of the/body of the strip while the end thereof is being skived A knife extends obliquely across the gap between the rolls and is mounted for angular movement about an axis located'at thatend of the rolls which is remote from the open end. In front of the rolls is a `table or support for the end portion of the strip and a gage for the extreme end edge of the strip, means being provided for pushing sidewise to the rolls the end portion of the strip thus supported and guided. With this construction an extremely accurate scarf may be produced.
This and otherfeatures of theinvention, including certain details of construction and combinations of parts, will be describedas embodied in an illustrative machine and pointed out in the appended claims. i i

rlhe knife 54 has formed along each'side `a V groove, the groove on one side (the riggght-hand side as viewed in Fig. 1) being 'held against a V face 55 formed in a member 56 by a clamp 57 and screw 58. The cutting edge 54a of the knife is positioned in the member 56 by a plate 59 fixed on the member 56; and thrust on the knifeV due to the cutting of the scarf is resisted by an adjustable screw 60 threaded through a lug 61on the member 56 and bearing against a block 62 resting on the knife and having a lip 63 (liig. 8) engaging the back of the knife.
The member 56 is slidingly and rotatably mounted on a rod 64 (Figs. 2 and 6) which is fixed by screws 65 to an arcuate slide 66 rotatably mounted in a bracket 67 fixed by a bolt 68 (Fig. 3) to themain frame 1. The bracket 67 has formed on it a tongue 69 Y which fits ina groove 70 in the frame. rlhe The arcuate slide 66 is'prevented from endwise movement in the bracket 67 byv a block 71 5) positioned in a slot in the `arcuate slide, iixed by a screw 72 to the bracket 67.

A spring and knife in a clockwise direction (see Fig. 6) about the axis of the slide. The spring 76 is connected at oneend to a bent rod 77 fixed in a lug 78 projecting from the bracket 67l and at the other end to a hook fixed in which is engaged by a roll 101 76 tends to swing theV slide 66 ,75 ported at its left-hand end during the cut* ting by a face (F i0: 2) formed on the a block 79 slidingly mounted in a bore inthe y rod 64. A screw 8O` having fixed to it a hand-wheel 81 is threaded through the block 79 and is prevented'from endwise movement in the shaft 64 so that when the screw is rotated the block 79 is moved axially of the shaft to vary the tension of the spring 76.

When the upper roll 141 is adjusted axially by means ot the slide 281 to 'vary the Width of the scarf, the knife is sinniltaneouslyV and correspondingly adjusted. For this purpose the member 56 (Fig. 2) is providedl with a seating and cap for one end ofV al ball-ended link 9drthe other end of which is seated in one end of an arm 95 the other end of which is mounted on a reduced portion 96 of the shaft 17. The reduced portion 96 is free to rotate in the arm7 andthe arm is confined axially of the shaft between the shoulder formedl by the reduced portion 96 and a- Washer 97 iiX'ed on the end of the shaft by a screw 98 so that the arm 95 moves with the shalt' when it is movedg axially and through the halllended link 94 causes the knife-carrying member V56 to slide axially on the rod 611.
