Description

Sept. 1, .1926. 1,599,184

B. POLIHRONIS. NOW'BY JUDICIAL CHANGE OF NAME Wv J. POLYCHRONIS NUT FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS Filed Sept. 7, 192g Patented Sept. 7, 1926.

I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

BILLY POLIHRONIS, NOW BY JUDICIAL CHANGE OF NAME WILLIAM JIM POLYCHRONIS,

- OF PORTLAND, OREGON.

NUT FOB MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.

Application filed September 7, 1922. Serial No. 586,730.

My invention relates to musical instrument nuts in general, and particularly to the nuts used with the steel or Hawaiian guitar, the object being to provide a removable nut that will preserve the proper length of the strings, that will lift the strings a greater distance above the frets than the regular guitar nut, that will preserve the tone of the instrument, and that will cause the tops of all the strings to lie in the same substantially horizontal plane so that the all may be touched with the steel bar w en playing without unduly depressing any single string.

I accomplish these objectsby means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawin which is a part of this application for etters Patent, like characters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which:

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view (if the neck of a guitar with my device mounted thereupon, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my device upon an enlarged scale.

My device is disposed above and upon the regular instrument nut 3, havin a body portion 4 above said nut 3, a rear eg 5 and a front leg 6 adapted to receive said nut 3 therebetween, as shown in Fig. 1. The body portion 4 is curved rearwardly and downwardly to meet the rear leg 5.

To preserve the proper length of the strings of the instrument I provide that the forward face 7 of my device shall lie in the same vertical plane as the forward face of the nut 3, as shown by line 88 in Fig. 1.

It is obvious that my device will lift the instrument strin a greater distance from the frets than t e regular nut 3, as illustrated by the string 9 in Fig. 1.

To preserve the tone of the instrument it is desirable that the nut be a solid member,

and'this I provide for by making the body portion 4 solid, and having said body portion and the legs 5 and 6 in contact at all points with the instrument nut 3, as shown in Fig. 1.

Notches 10 are provided in the upper face of the body portion 4, and to provide that the upper surface of all strings shall lie in substantially the same horizontal plane, said notches are of various depths corresponding to the diameters of their respective strings, as illustrated in Fig. 2.

My device may be made of any size, and constructed of any materials deemed convenient and suitable for a device of this character, and while I have illustrated and described a form of construction found desirable in materializing my invention, I wish to include in this application all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that may fairly be considered to come within the scope and purview of my invention as defined in the ap ended claim.

aving disclosed my invention so that others may be enabled to construct and to use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a removable instrument nut: a body portion adapted to embrace the regular instrument nut; and a portion uprising from said body portion and having a forward surface lying in the same plane as the forward face of the regular instrument nut.

In witness whereof I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature at Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, this 2nd day of Sept. 1922.

BILLY POLIHRONIS.
