Aug. 3l,1926. l v I W. R. CEPERLY REMOVABLE SECTION BOOK Filed August 28, 1925 Wale/i3. M.
I 'ATYDRNEY Patented Aug. 31, 1926.
UNITED STATES WALTER R. CEPERLY,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
REMOVABLE-SECTION BOOK.
Application led August 28, 1925. Serial No. 53,130.
This invention relates to bookbinding devices, and more particularly to what I term a removable section book.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide simple and eicient means whereby a book consisting of a plurality of sections can be readily bound or secured together in such a manner as to permit independent removal and reinsertion of the individual sections of the book. A further object is to providefmeans of this character of simpley and `inexpensive construction and neat appearance. pear in the detailed description.
Inthe-drawingsf;
Fig. 1 isa plan-view,fpartly: in section, 0f the binder inopen position. i
Fig. `2 is a section taken substantially on lineiZ--Q ofFig. .11.' vi
Fig. 3 is a fragmentaryf sectional view through. the back plate `and onegof the clips and associated parts. 1 -f Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the binder and a plurality of book sections mounted therein taken on substantially on line 4--4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a side view of one of the book sections with the clips applied, partly broken away.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the clips.
The device includes a plate 1 of sheet steel to which is secured a strip 2 of canvas by means of rivets, adhesive, or any other suitable or preferred manner. Outer cover members 3 of suitable construction are secured to the portions of strip 2 which project beyond plate 1 by means of adhesive or any other suitable or preferred manner, these cover members being preferably provided on their inner and outer faces with fabric coverings 4, which coverings extend about the outer face of plate 1. The upper and lower edges of plate 1 are turned inwardly to provide beads 5 at the outer ends of resilient lingers 6 formed by slitting plate l from the ends thereof for a predetermined distance. The beads 5 are disposed downwardly and inwardly of the binder for engagement into depressions 7 formed in the ends of clips 8 of rectangular cross section and box like construction, these clips being formed of sheet metal or any other suitable or preferred material and being closed at their outer ends. The clips 8 are provided in the lateral walls thereof Further objects will apwith inwardly directed tangs which are disposed to engage into the sheets of the section or volume 10 of a bookvabout the corner portion of which the clip is placed,
the volume 10 being of such thickness that the clip fits snugly thereon. Preferably the leaves of volume 10 are cut away at the corners thereof, as illustrated in Figure 3, so that the ends of the sheets of the volume or section 10 coincide with the ends .volumes or sections 10 against outward movement laterally of the binder.
In practice, two clips 8 are applied to each volume or section 10 at the upper and `lower corners thereof, as illustratedin Figure; 5. To insert the vvolume 10 into the binder it is first placed so that one or more of the beads 5 at the lower end of plate 1 engage into the recess 7 of the lower clip 8, after which the volume or section 10 is moved into position to cause the beads 5 at the upper end of the plate to engage into the recess 7 of the upper clip 8.V In this manner the volume or section can be quickly and easily secured in position within the binder and by reversing this operation can be easily removed when required. This provides simple and eflicient means whereby a book or records can be readily assembled in sections or volumes and these volumes can be quickly placed in a binder so as to be readily accessible without the necessity of handling a large and heavy book such as would be required if all ofthe sections were permanently secured together. Preferably, though not necessarily, each volume or section 10 is provided with suitable cover sheets 11 which are secured by adhesive, or any other suitable manner, to the lateral flanges of clips 8, and these cover sheets can, by
suitable lettering, properly identify the various volumes or sections of the book.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a back plate provided at each end with resilient fingers having terminal securing elements, the fingers at one end of the plate being` opposed to the fingers at the other end of said plate, a book section, and members carried by said book section and conned between the terminal elements of the fingers for releasably securing the book section to the plate.
2. ln a device of the character described, a back plate provided at each end with resilient lingers havingl terminal securing elements, a book section, and members secured about the back corners oit the book section and each provided in its outer end with a recess receiving the terminal elements ot the lingers, said members and the tingers cooperating to releasably secure the book section to said plate.
3. In a device of the character described, a back plate provided with resilient end tingers having their terminal portions shaped to provide securing beads, a book section, and clips ttingl about the back corners ot the book section and provided in their outer ends with recesses receiving said beads 'for detachably securing the book section to said back plate.
4. in a device of the character described, a back plate provided with resilient end lingers having their terininal portions turned inwardly toward the plate and bent to forni terminal securing beads, a book section, and clips secured about the back corners of said book section and provided in their outer ends with recesses receiving said beads for detachably securing the book section to said plate.
5. In a device of the character described, a back plate provided at each end with resilient 'lingers having terminal securing elements, the lingers at one end ot the plate being opposed to the lingers at the other end ot the plate, the sets ot lingers being` adapted to receive between thein an article to be releasably secured to the plate.
G. ln a device of the character described, a back plate oit resilient material slitted troni each end to provide a plurality of re-V silient lingers, said iingers being bent forwardly of the plate and shaped at their vfree ends to forni rounded terminal securing elements, the fingers at one end of the plate being opposed to the lingers at the other end of said plate.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a clip adapted for securernent about the corner portion of a book section and provided in its outerk end with a transverse recess for reception of a vcooperating securing element ot a binder. i
8. As a new article of manufacture, a clip o box like construction including side walls and an outer end wall, the outer end Wall having a transverse depression and the side walls being provided with inwardly project ing securing tangs.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature.
WALTER R. CEPERLY.
