Application filed December 2, 1925.
This invention relates to lubricators, and more particularly to lubricators for drills and other apparatus employing compressed air as an actuating medium. I
In the present invention, I provide a lubri'cator of the type in which an oil reservoir is placed in the air line and the air passing through the line is adapted to'c'onvey oil from the reservoir to the drill or other apparatus with which it is employed.
An object of the invention is the provision of improved means for regulating the quantity of oil delivered fro-m the reservoir.
More specifically, I provide a reservoir having a valve which may be regulated to feed the proper amount of the lubricant through the air line.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the reservoir is coupled in the line,
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view,
Figure 8 is a perspective View of the valve disassembled, and,
Figure 4: is a detail sectional view on line l l of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a casing which may be of any suitable size and shape. The casing is provided with a top 2 having a filling opening normally closed by a threaded plug 8. A cylindrical conduit 4 is formed in the top of the casing and the ends of this conduit are provided with nipples 5 to which two sections of the line 6 through which the air is conveyed are adapted to be connected, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The conduit 4 is provided with an in teriorly threaded opening 7 arranged within the casing and extending into the casing, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. Above the opening 7 and in alinement there with, the conduit is provided with an opening 8 and is further provided with a vertically extending sleeve 9.
A valve is adapted to extend through the alined openings in the conduit and project into the reservoir. As shown, the valve consists of a stem 10, the lower end of which is externally threaded, as at 11, and is adapted to be received in the threaded. opening 7 in the bottom of the conduit. Beneath the threaded portion, the stem is reduced, at
Serial No. 72,758.
12, and extends to a point adjacent the bottom of the casing. The stem is provided with a. central bore 13 which is of reduced cross section adjacent the bottom and is enlarged at an intermediate point forming a conical valve seat 14:. The interior of the stem is threaded adjacent its upper end and is adapted to receive a threaded stem 15 having a handle 16 formed on its outer end and provided with a cone valve member 17 at its lower end, adapted to engage the seat ld. Above the seat 14:, the stem 10 is provided with an opening 18. As shown, the stem 10 and the valve stem 1 5 project through the upper opening 8 and the projecting portions may be protected by a cover 19 which is secured to the sleeve 9 in any suitable manner, as by threads 20.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description. When the casing is arranged in the line and the valve 17 opened or partially opened, air under pressure passes through the bore 13 and escapes into the reservoir. The air escaping into the bottom of the reservoir passes upwardly through the oil to the top of the reservoir, exerting a downward pressure thereon. After the pressure has been built up in the reservoir, the oil will be drawn into the conduit 4 and thence into the pipe 6 when the valve of the apparatus with which the lubricator is used is opened. As is well known, the opening of the valve causes a temporary reduction of pressure in the line which is compensated for by the flow of air from the reservoir, and as the air flows.
through the line, the oil will be drawn out of the opening 18 and conveyed by the stream of air or other fluid to the apparatus to lubricate it. An important feature of the invention is the provision of a valve adjusted by means of screw-threads or the like by means of which a line degree of adjustment can be obtained and the supply of oil to the apparatus properly regulated.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subj oined claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a casing, a conduit. arranged adjacent said casing, said conduit being provided with an opening communicating with said casing, a hollow tubular member extending transversely of said conduit through said opening, the lower end of said member communicating with the interior of said casing, a valve seat formed in said member intermediate its ends, said member being provided with an opening beyond said valve seat communicating with said conduit, and a valve arranged in said member.
2. In a device of the character described, a casing, a conduit arranged adjacent said casing, said conduit being provided with an opening con'imunicating with said casing, a stem extending transversely of said conduit through said opening, said stem being provided with a central bore reduced at one end and internally thread-ed adjacent the other end, the portion of said bore intermediate said ends forming a valve seat, said stem being further provided with an opening within said conduit, a threaded valve stem arranged within said stem, and a valve formed on the lower end of said valve stem and cooperating with said seat.
3. In a device of the character described a closed casing, a conduit formed in the top of said casing, said conduit being provided with a pair of alined openings communicating with the exterior and the interior of said casing respectively, a stem extending transversely of said conduit and projecting through said openings, said stem being provided with a reduced bore at its lower end communicating with the interior of said casing, a valve seat formed in said bore intermediate its ends, the upper portion of said bore being enlarged and threaded, said stem being provided with an opening above said valve seat communicating with the interior of said conduit, a threaded valve stem arranged in said stem and projecting there from, and a valve formed on the lower end of said stein.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature.
