This is particularly adapted to locate the holes for the handles and latch and the key lock mechanism of automobile door locks, such as shown in the application of Lewis J. Morgan, Sr. No. 536,592, filed Feb. 14th, 1922.
As will be understood by those skilled in the art, the doorlatch and lock mechanism of automobiles is located on the inner side or on the interior of the door, the inner faces of the doors are of different inclinations and the outer faces of the doors are curved, the inclinations and curvatures varying in different doors, although intended to be exactly the same.
In placing the handles on the outer sides of the doors it is highly desirable. it not necessary, to have the shanks of the handles at substantially a right angle to the outer face of the door and also these handles must be located in juxtaposition to the key lock mechanism. This is therefore for the purpose of locating the holesfor the handles and the key mechanism of the lock.

The usually has a second locating member 13 and also a second guide member 1% carried by an arm 1& and having a passage 15 with the locating member 13; the locating member 1 placing the hole for the handle of the latch mechanism of the lock and the locating member 13 placing the hole for the key lock mechanism which controls the permanent lock member 11.
The locating member 13 is mounted on a part orblock 13 carried by an arm 16 hav ing a hub 16 journalled on the jaw 2 and adjustable about the axis of the locating member 4; and the arm 14c has a hub 14" journalled on the jaw 3 and adjustable about the axis of the tool guide 8. The arms 16 and 14? are adjusted correspondingly about the jaws 2 and 3 respectively, so that the second locating member 13 and the tool guiding passage '15 are always in alinement. As here illustrated, the member 14 is held in its adjusted position by a spring pressed bolt 17 carried in the hub 14 of the member 14: and having a nose 19 movable into any one of two holes 20, usually arranged dia metrically opposite each other in a flange 21 on which the bearing face 6 is pivoted. The bolt is provided with a suitable handle 22 by means of which it may be retracted against the action of its spring 23. The arm 16 carrying the locating member 13 is held in position by asimilar locking'mechani'sm the bolt or which is operated by a'ha'ndle 22,8;- v. In order'to space the locating members 4' and 13 different distances apart, the arm 16 is formed with a radial guide 24 and the block member 13 through which the member 13 threads is adjustable along the guide and is held in its adjusted position by a clamping screw 25 which clamps opposite sides of the guide 24 on the block 13". The arm 14 is formed with a similar radial guide 26 for the guide block 14 adjustable along'the guide 26 and held in its position by a clamping screw 28 which operates to clamp opposite sides of the guide onto the block 14.
The locating member 4 is provided with a terminal piece 29 at the end of its shank, which terminal piece is connected to the shank by a universal or ball and socket joint 30, and is secured to the shank by a screw or other fastening device 31 extending endwisely through the terminal piece 29 and threading axially into the shank 4. The passage in the terminal piece 29 for the screw 31 being of such shape as to permit movement of the ball and socket joint. The terminal piece 29 is also provided with a projecting hub or point 32 at its outer end for entering the hole in the member 10 in which the shank of the handle is finally attached, this hole being usually square and the hub 32 being also square to fit therein. The locating member 13 is provided with a conical point 33 at its end, this point being rigid therewith and adapted to enter a hole 34 in the member 11 of the lock, the hole 34 receiving the rod or shaft of which is turned by the key of the key lock which lock mechanism is located by the drill 35 guided in mechanism, in the hole bored the passage 15.
In operation, the casing 12 of the lock on the inner side of the door. 'In order to locate the handles and the key mechansim in alinement with the members 10 and 11 in the casing 12, the bracket 1 is mounted on the door, as shown in Figure 1 with a padding 7 for the bearing face 6 against the outer face of the door and with a terminal piece 29 in the member 10.
Also the locating member 13'is arranged With its point in the hole of the member 11 of the lock mechanism. In so locating the member 13 the locating member 4 will move about the ball and socket joint 30 by so doing,
and properly position or aline the guide passage 8 with the locating member 4 and also locate the passage 15 in alinement with the locating member 13. Both locating members 4 and 13 are then tightened and suitable drills operated in the guide passages 8 and 15 and the holes drilled thereby are in alinement with the locating members 4 and 13 and in proper relation to,
or at the right angle to the outer face of the door and also in proper relation to the holes of the locking members 10 and 11. On different doors, it is necessary to shift the arms 16, 14 about the axis of the locating member 4 and tool passage guide 8. This is readily done by unlocking and swinging the support 16 of the locating member 13 about the jaw 2 until its point 33 can be placed in the hole of the member 11 and locking it in its adjusted position as described; and the arm 14 is likewise unlocked and swings about the jaw 3.
By this jig, the handles of the door latch mechanism of automobiles can be accurately located to stand at the proper angle to the outer faces of the doors.
lVhat we claim is:
1. A jig for the purpose set forth comprising a bracket formed with opposing jaws, a plurality of locating members carried by one with a bearm face opposed to one of said locating members, a tool guide extending through the bearing face and alined with the axis of such locating member and a second guide at one side of the bearing'face, alined with the other locating member, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A jig for the purpose set forth comprising a clamping bracket formed with opposing jaws, a main locating member carried by one aw and adjustable transversely through the jaw, a second locating member supported by such jaw and adjustable about the axis of the first locating member, the other jaw having a bearing face opposed to the end of the main locating member and a tool guide through the bearing face and alined with the axis of the main locating member, a tool guide element carried by the' latter jaw and adjustable about said guide and having a tool passage for alinement with the second locating member, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A jig for the purpose set forth comprising a clamp having opposing jaws, a
end of the main locating member and a tool guide opening through said face and alined with the axis of the main locating member, an arm mounted on the latter jaw and adjustable about the axis of said tool guide and having a tool passage therethrough alined with the second locating member, and means for holding said arms from move ment relatively to the second jaw when the jaw, the other jaw being formed guide passage is alined with the second locating member, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
A jig for the purpose set forth com- 5 prising a clamp having opposing jaws, a main locating member having a shank threading transversely through one jaw toward the other jaw, a terminal piece at the end oi the shank and connected thereto by a universal joint, an arm mounted on the bracket and adjustable about the axis of the main locating member, and formed with a radial guide, a second locating member supported by said arm and adjustable along the radial guide, the other jaw having a bearing face opposed to the end of the main locating member, and a tool guide opening through said face and alined with the axis of the latter jaw and adjustable about the axis of the tool guide and being also formed with a radial guide and also having a block adjustable along the radial guide and formed with a tool passage for alineinent with the second locating member, and means for holding the last-mentioned arm and the block in their adjusted positions, substantially as and for the purpose described.
