My invention relates to razor Sharpeners, and more particularly to safety razor blades sharpeners.
I am aware of numerous devices on the market for the sharpening of razor blades of the wafer type, but they are of. complicated structure and hence expensive. lt is my chief object to produce, in contrast to the above, a simple Sharpener for this type of blade having but two simple moving parts, small and compact in structure, durable, in expensive and efficient. One that is light in weight and portable, and adapted to rest horizontally upon a surface and be gripped by one hand and the moving parts be oper-V ated by the other hand moving to-and-fro, the blade sliding on the sharpening or stropping element and reversing at the end of the stroke.
With the above and other objects in View, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, form and arrangement of parts. The accompanying sheet of drawings, forming a part of this specication, illustrates an embodiment of my invention, and what I claim as new, is particularly pointed out in the appended claims following this specification.
Figure 1 of the said drawings is a plan of my Sharpener constructed in accordance with the invention and shows it in operative position, the handle being drawn toward the operator.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of Fig. 1
along the line 2--2 thereof and looking in the direction of the arrows. The light dotand-dash portion indicates the position the blade holder and blade will assume on the reverse stroke of the operatin member. Fig. 3 is an end elevation o Fig. 1 showing the blade in contact with the surface of the stone and the moving parts in engagement with the upper flange of the housing. Fig. 4 is a plan of the movable members of the invention and shows to advantage the assembly thereof.
Adverting to thedrawings: The numeral 5 indicates the oil or other sharpenin stone or element of the device, and 6 a eather facing or equivalent stropping body. 7 is a referaving the remote end 8 closed and the near end 9 opened as shown and for a purpose to be later set forth.
To the holder 7 I preferably form with the sides thereof a superstructure 10 in the shape of channels having the flanges in horizontal planes, 11 being the upper flange.
12 indicates the shaft of the blade holder and to `which is mounted ag. pair of jaws. The jaw 13 is secured tothe shaft as by rivet 1&1, and the other jaw 15 is hingedly attached to jaw 13 by hinge-pin 16. To the shaft 12 and jaw 13 is also secured, and by the same rivet 14, a spring clip 17.
To the jaw 13 is formed a pair of raised eyelets 18 for the mounting and positioning thereon of a razor blade 19 of the Grillette35A jaw 15 has registering P type, and the other apertures 20 of larger bore for clearing the eyelets.
The ends 21 of the shaft 12 are adapted to be housed within the channels of the superstructure 10, and 22 represents a rubber or other ferrule slipped on the said ends for silent operation, if desired.
The operating member of my invention in the embodiment shown thereof, consists of a spring-wire frame 23 having its terminals loosely looped around the shaft 12 as at 2li, the extreme ends 25 of the wire projecting outwardly, like fingers, and at right-angles to the side'mernbers of the frame. Additional fingers 26 and 27 are formed adjacent the finger 25, and the said lingers in combination with the end 21 of the shaft are designed to bearvon the upper flange 11 of the channel structure when assembled.` The shaft end 21 and middle finger 26 are adapted to bear on the under surface of the said flange and the other two fingers on the top surface thereof. 28 is the handle of the operating member and it is formed so as to project above the flange 11, Fig. 2, for the convenient grasping thereof by the foreiiners. g To assemble the moving parts on the iiange 11, the shaft 12 and frame 23 are inserted through the open end 9 of the housing 7, and the shaft ends 21 and fingers 25, 26 and 27 interpositioned on the said iiange 11 as shown to advantage in Fig. 1.
In operation, the spring clip 17 and jaw 15 are raised. and the razor blade positioned on the eyelets, then the handle moved t0- and-fro. In one direction of movement the blade will draw across `the stone as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, and in the reversedirection of the reciprocal motion, the blade will draw across the stone as shown by the dot-anddash lines, same figure. v It Wlll be Dil noted that the shaft ends and fingersslide on lthe flange 11, and at the end of each stroke the shaft will oscillate and thereby' reverse the blade. To strop the blade, siniply slip the stone out of the holder from the open end 9 and present the stropping surface uppermost in the holder.
Having thus illustrated and described thepreferred embodiment of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the following l. A raor` blade sharpener of the character described, comprising a sharpening element, a holder therefor having upper inwardly projectingflanges, a blade holder having a shaft,- and an operating member attachable to the shaft near its ends and engageable with both surfaces of the said flanges, the said member adapted to' be reciprocated along the surfaces of said flanges to support and carry the blade holder toand-fro over the sharpening element, and said blade holder provided with a pair of jaws to position and hold a razor blade therebetween for contact with the said element. n
Q. A Sharpener for razor blades of the wafer type, comprising a fiat sharpeningstone, a holder therefor having channelshaped side portions above the stone terminating in inwardly and opposed upper flanges, a blade holder consisting of a pair of jaws supported on a shaft and provided with means for engaging a wafer blade, and a wire operating member having its eX- tremities looped about the shaft near the ends thereof and terminating in lingers adapted to bear upon the upper surface of said opposed flanges, and adjacent said fingers having additional fingers 'formed to bear against both surfaees'of said flanges in cooperation with said first-named lingers for supporting the operating member and blade holder carried thereby in sliding engagement with the said flanges.
A razor blade sharpening device, comprising a block-like sharpening element having sharpening surfaces on its opposite sides, a housing for holding'said element and in which said opposed sharpening sides are reversible, said housing having a superstructure projecting above the surface of the sharpening elementand along opposite sides of the housing, said struc-ture forming a.
channel along each side of the housing ter minating in a, flatand relatively narrow guide strip as the upper wall of said channel, a blade holder, a shaft upon which said holder is mounted, the ends of said shaft being confined in said channels with freedom ot' reciprocation, and means connected to said shaft for reciprocating the same and wiping, the blade carried by the holderover the uppermost surface ,of the sharpening element, said shaft-connected means having fingers projecting into the said channels and overlying the said guide strips for retaining the said shaft within the said channels and against the said guide strips.
ll. A razor blade sharpening device, comprising a block-like sharpening element having sharpening surfaces on its oppositer sides, a housing for holding said element and in which said opposed sharpening sides are reversible. said housing having a superstructure projecting above the surface of the sharpening element and along opposite sides of the housing, said structure forming a channel along each side of the housing terminating in a flat and relatively narro'w guide strip as the upper wall of said channel,`a blade holder, a shaft upon which said holder is mounted, the ends of said shaft being confined in said channels with freedom of reciprocation, and means connected to said shaft for reciprocating the same and wiping the blade carried by the holder over the uppermost surface of 'the sharpening element, said shaft-connected means comprising a spring-wire handle having fingers projecting into the said channels and overlying the said guide strips for interlocking the handle with freedom of reciprocation within the channels.
