MOTOR RADIATOR.

This invention relates to radiators for the motors of automobiles, trucks, tractors and the like, and has for its object the provision of a novel radiator so constructed and arranged that any steam issuing from the wate" jacket of the motor will be condensed prior to entry into the upper tank of the radiator, the advantage being that there will be less evaporation than is ordinarily the case and a consequent reduction in the danger of overheating of the motor.
An important and most specific object is the provision of a radiator including an initial bar-auxiliary coolingportion acting as a conductor interposed between the connection to the water jacket of the motor and the upper tank of the main radiator.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this cha *acter which will be very simple and inexpensive in manufacture, positive in action, efficient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and ad vantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through a radiator constructed in accordance with my invention, the radiator being shown in association with a motor, and
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the radiator alone.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates, more or less diagrammatically, a motor of any ordinary or preferred type having the usual Water jacket provided with outlet and inlet connections B and C respectively provided for the purpose of making connections with the radiator.
The letter I) represents the usual fan assembly driven by a belt E engaged about a drive pulley, not shown, operated by the motor.
In carrying out the invention, 1 provide a radiator structure designated broadly by the numeral and including upper and lower tanks 11 and 12 respectively connected by a plurality of tubes or honeycombs 13, as preferred, the structure up to this point being conventional. At the lower tank 12 is a connection 14 upon which may be engaged the usual pipe or hose 15 which leads to the inlet connection C of the motor water jacket.
The essential feature lies in the provision of an auxiliary or initial tank 16 which is located to the rear of the main radiator portion and in spaced relation thereto as clearthe main or forward portion as to define a space 18 within which is located the fan. The tank 16 has a connection 19 with which is engaged the usual fleXible coupling connected with the water outlet connection B of the water jacket. It should be mentioned, in passing, that the upper tank of the radiator is. equipped with the usual filling neck 20 and the ordinary overflow pipe 21.
In the use of a radiator constructed as above described and as shown in the drawings it will be apparent that water issuing from the water jacket of the motor and passing through the outlet connection 1'), will enter the tank 16 through the connection 19 and pass upwardly through the tubes or equivalent structure 17 into the upper tank 11 from which the water will pass downwardly through the tubes 13 to the lower tank 12 and thence through the connection 14: and hose 15 back to the inlet connection C to the motor. Owing to the specific location of the fan, it is apparent that air will be sucked in through the radiator in the usual manner and will be forced very strongly against and between the tubes 17 of the auxiliary structure so that any steam issuing from the motor and rising through the tubes 17 will be condensed and be prevented from entering the tank 11 in the form of steam and escaping through the overflow pipe in the usual manner. In this way it is quite evident that evaporation of the water will be checked if not absolutely prevented and that overheating of the motor will be avoided entirely.

Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. In a radiator of the character described, upper and lower tanks connected by passages, the lower tank having an outlet con nection and a condensingdevice comprising a tank located to the rear of said Water passages and below said upper tank, and a plurality of passages connected with said condenser tank and- With the upper tank, the condenser structure being spaced from the main structure to define a space for the accommodation of the fan of the motor.

In a radiator structure of the character descrlbed, a main radiator including upper and lower tanks connected by Water passages, and a condenser spaced rearward- M ly of the main radiator and including a tank having an inlet connection and a plurality of passages establishing communication betweens'aid tank and the main radiator, said condenser tank being spaced from the main radiator to define a compartment for the reception of the motor fan whereby the last named Water passages will be subjectedto adraft. i
