Description

X. WHITING.
Harness-Hanging Frame. N'0.59,730. v I. "Paten'tedFeb.9. 875.
WITNESSES 4 EN THE GFARHIC CO.FHQTO'LITH.39& "vi PARK PLACE, N-Y- TATE S UNITED XUR-Y WHITING, OF TRENTON, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-HANGING FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,730, dated February 9, 1875; application filed November 12,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, XURY WHITING, of Trenton, in the county of Dodge and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Suspending Harness and other articles 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for suspending harness or other articles, the object being to have the harness hung up sufficiently high to be out of the way and free from the liability of being kicked or pulled down by the horses, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of one side of a horse-stall with my invention attached thereto.
A represents the partition between two horse-stalls, at the outer end of which partition is a post, B, of suitable height. In this post is a vertical slot, a, through which passes a lever, O, which is pivoted, at b, to the partition A. The front end of the lever 0 forms a hook, d, from which depends a rod, strap, or wire, 6. On the inner end of the lever O is placed an adjustable weight, D,which may be moved in and out thereon, as required.
When it is desired to hang up harness, the rod, strap, or wire 6 is pulled, which turns the lever G on its pivot b, so that the harness may be hung on the hook d. The counterbalancing-weight D will then turn the lever back, so as to elevate the hook d with the harness thereon.
On the inner side of the post B is formed or attached a toothed or rack bar, 6, into which a pawl, G, takes, said pawl being pivoted to the lever O, and its upper end provided with an arm, f, upon which is placed a weight, h, as shown. This pawl will take into the rackbar 1', and keep the harness suspended; and it may be used with the counterbalancing-weight D, or without it, if so desired, and in the latter case the lever 0 need not extend beyond the pivot-point b.
This device may be attached at any other place desired, as well as to the partitions between horse-stalls, and may be used for suspending other articles as well as harness.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The pivoted lever 0, having a hook, d, formed or attached at one end, and provided at said end with a rod, strap, or wire, 0, and at the other end with counterbalancing-weight 1), substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The pivoted lever 0, provided with hook cl, and rod, strap, or wire 6, in combination with the rack-bar i and the pawl Gr, having arm f, with weight h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the slotted post B, with rack-bar i, pivoted lever C, with hook d, rod, strap, or wire 6, and weight D, and the pawl G, with arm f and weight h, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of November, 1874.
XURY WHITING.
