This invention construction. j j
A prime desideratum is to provide an apparatus of this kind which is particularly applicable to a brick drier or the like to generally simplify, render more eflicient and reduce the cost of operationof-the same.
Specifically' an aim is toy provide a structure of this type in units capable of use singly or in a battery, devoid of flues therethrough,'whereby special front or rear ends are unnecessary, be formed by a continuation of the masonry of the firebox, and the space arched by the unit or units may ycommunicate directly or with the discharge flue for the firebox.
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent if not later specifically mentioned, from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a view of the apparatus in front elevation, but partially installed to disclose details; l
Figure 2 is a plan of one of the drier units, partly broken away and in section;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of one of the drier units, and
Figure 4; is a perspective view suggesting a battery of the drier units connected in operative relation.
Referring specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, drier units are shown at 10 and each unit is designed so that it may be made in a single metallic casting. Each unit 10 is similar, of arch shape as shown in that it comprises spaced parallel arched walls of substantially equal length joined at their edges by end and bottom walls, has an interiorly unobstructed water space, attaching lugs 11 integral with the unit, a plurality of openings 12 through the end walls thereof and an opening 13 through the top.
011e or more units 10 may be used in an installation. When one unit is employed, openings or apertures 12 at both end walls have suitable plugs or closures 14 screwed or otherwise fastened therein, as shown in Figures 2 and 3. Vater is supplied to the unit or units as through a pipe a connected in one of the lowermost plugs 414 at the front ofthe unit and the return line b for relates to a `steam drier so that the front wall .may
condensation is connected at the opposite end inthe adjacent lowermost plugs 11i. A pipe 15 isscrewed into the opening 13 through .which steam under appropriate control may be taken from the unit. Said pipe 15 may extend to coils or'the like in i t A rier ltunnels for drying purposes.VV Obviously the unit, as in Figure 1, may be equipped with accessories such as steam or pressuregage 16, and a water. gagel? arranged in communication with the water space of the unit by pipes 18.
Said unit 10 isused in connection with a furnace 19 as in Figure 1. Furnace 19 has upright walls of masonry at 2O on which the section 10 rests and to which it is cemented and anchored, as by means of bolts 21 passed through the lugs 11. As a result, the unit crowns the combustion chamber or Firebox` 22. The fuel door of said furnace is shown at 23 and below the same is an ash-pit door 24E. The front wall 20 covers the entire frontpof unit 10 and the i products of combustion from the furnace discharge from the combustion chamber directly into a chimney or smoke flue to which the unit is directly fastened and anchored` by cement and the aforesaid bolts 21.
The unit is arranged under a drying tunnel in a kiln so that the bricks placed therein, usually on trucks, will be subjected tothe drying action of the heat radiating from V the drier unit through generation of steam in the latter when fire is maintained in furnace 19. Preferably a steam pressure of twenty-live pounds is maintained in the unit 10.
About the openings 12 and 18, each unit is preferably reinforced by bosses 26 and 27.
Said units 10 may be used in battery form instead of singly. Referring to Figure 4,
in this connection, three units 10 have been so shown although the number employed is optional. These units 10 are mounted in a furnace 19 similarly to the single unit. In the present instance, openings 12 of the facing ends of the units are not plugged but remain open and alined, and the units are clampedy together water-tight by bolts 28 passed through adjacent ears 11. Plugs 14` are used for the openings 12 only at the free end walls of the outer units branch pipes 29 (in lieu of pipe 15) are detachably threadedy into the openings 13 and in turn threaded to a pipe functions similarly to the pipe l5. Anchor 10. Also, i
30, which i 'steam pipes and coils.
yspace 22 into the discharge flue.

bolts may also be used in the front and rear series of lugs Il to engage the front wall oi the 'furnace and the chimney.
In both arrangements, a fire in the fur,- nace 19 causes steam to 'be generated within the units IO, due to the presence of water supplied through pipes into plugs Ill in rear end of section, say, twenty-five pounds pressure.` The heat ra.- diating 'from the units is imparted to and dries the bricks or other ,materials in the 'associated drying tunnel or the like through Allproducts oi combustion pass directly from the chamber or In both arrangements, the bolts and pipe connections are readily displaceable to enable re- Inoval, substitution or repair of a unit.
v Various changes may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by appended Claims. o
I claim Al. In a boiler construction, an integral casting having two spaced substantiallyparto the extent oi: i
,. 2.111 a boiler construction,
allelY walls of arch-shape and of substantial-l y equal length ljoined at their-edges by end `and bottom walls to provide a water chamber, said casting being of such dimensions as" to enable its use as a boiler in itself, the end walls being provided with apertures adapted to be selectively plugged,
or arranged in `communication with other' boiler parts.
an integral castingihaving two spaced substantially parallel. walls of arch-shape and of substantially equal length joined atthe-ir edges by end and bottom walls to provide a water chamber, said casting being of such dimensions as to enable its use as a boiler in itself, the end walls being provided with apertures adapted to be selectively plugged, or 'arranged inv communication with other boiler parte, and outwardly extending attaching lugs at each end of the casting disposed substantially in longitudinal alignment.
