ADJUSTING MEANS non mm mamas.
Application filed. September 14, 1923. Serial No; 6 2,626.
In drop hammers where it is. frequently necessary to adjust the dies from front to back in the hammer this adjustment has been accomplished heretofore by loosening the die dowel in either the upper or'lower die and then filling in with shims from front to back, which means is, at best, very crude and unsatisfactory; being hard to hold in place under the severe jars to which the parts are subjected. The dies, due to the distortion of the metal caused by careless machining, either in planing the dovetail or in sinking impression or from other causes, arefrequently out of parallel from front to back, forming a twist or wind which it is also necessary to overcome.
The object of our invention is to produce a novel means for readily and accurately adjusting the die in the shoe or anvil cap, .to the front or rear and for compensating for the twist or wind in the die, said means comprising generally the die adjusting block and the compensating block arranged to be brought into coaction with the opposite sides of the die together with the proper shims and shoe die key.
A practical embodiment of our invention is represented in the accompanying drawings. in which Fig. 1 represents in horizontal section a portion of a drop hammer showing in plan our improved die adjusting means.
Fig. 2 represents a detail front view of the same.
Fig. 3 represents a detail section taken in the plane of the line III-III of 1.
The die 1 is represented in dotted lines.
The die adjusting block 7 has an angular i wall 8 corresponding to the angular wall 5' of the groove 4. The opposite wall 9 of the die adjusting block is straightand continuous except for the usual die engaging lug 10.
The block for compensating for the twist or Wind in the die is denoted by ll and its "corresponds with the curved side wall 6 of the groove 4: in the shoe or anvil cap. The opposite side 13 of this compensating block is straight and continuous and is adapted to engage one side of the die key 14, the other side of which key is arranged to engage the die 1.
To adjust the die to the front or rear, a thin shim is placed between the corresponding side walls of the die adjusting block and the groove in the shoe or anvil cap, either to the rear or the front of the apex of the angle, as the case may be. With the degree of angularity shown in the accompanying drawings this adjustment will move the die engaging lug either to the front or to the rear more than double the thickness of the shim. The die key is then driven home and the die Securely held.
When there is a twist or windin the die. this can be compensated for by putting steel shims or equal between the correspond ing walls of the die adjusting block and groove, and the key driven home. it being understood that the curved wall engagement between the'compensating block and its corresponding side wall of the groove will bring the die into parallelism by the slight longitudinal movement of said comnovel means for not only adjusting the die to the front and rear, but also forcompensating for any twist or wind in the die, the die being securely held in its adjusted position against displacement by the shims incident to the operation of the hammer.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the form. construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention: hence, we donot wish to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What we claim is 1. Die adjusting means including a shoe or anvil cap having a die receiving grooveacross its face. a die adjusting block for in sertion between the die and one wall of the groove. and a compensating block and die key for insertion; between the die and the ing Walls of the die adjustment block and groove being angular and adapted to receive shims therebetWeen either to the front or rear of the apex to shift the die to the rear or front respectively.
2. Die adjusting means including a shoe or anvil cap having a die receiving groove across its face with undercut opposite side Walls, a die adjusting block for insertion between the die and one Wall of the groove,
and a compensating block and die key for insertion between the die and the opposite therebetween either to the front orrear of the apex to shift the die to the rear or front respectively.
In testimony, that We claim the foregoing as our invention, we have signed our names 20 this 16th day of June 1923 EDWARD W. MERRILL. HOWARD TERHUNE,
