This invention relates to record or index tion thereof, showing themovable end wall devices and more p-articularlyto card index of the slide moved away from the body poror record cabinets and trays or slides tion and the follower d1sengaged from the therefor. recorddevices supported by the slide. In the particular construction shown the tray is formed of sheet metal, and the movable end wall is made of a portion of the upright wall 25, and a portion forming an angularly eX- tending projection or tongue 26 which overlies a portion of the bottom of the tray. This portion 26 is provided with one or more guide slots 27 into which tongues or guide members 28 on the tray bottom project. The movable end portion and the tray proper are provided with interengaging parts whereby the movable end wall may be re leasably secured in its closing position substantially in contact with the body portion of the tray. For this purpose, in the embodiment of the invention shown, the bottom of the tray is provided with an aperture 29 and the part 26 of the front wall member is provided with a lug or projection 30 carried by a spring 31 which is adapted to engage the apertured portion of the tray bottom when the upright end wall member is in substantial contact with the body of the tray, so as to releasably secure it in such position. To permit the upright end wall to be moved outwardly from the body of the tray, the finger of the operator is pressed against the lug, forcing it up out of the apertured portion of the body of the tray, whereupon the upright end wall may be drawn forwardly out of contact with the body of the tray.
The movable end portion of the tray is provided with guide means, in addition to the lugs 28 and slots 2'7, before mentioned, for guiding the tray end and maintaining it in correct alignment in its movements. For this purpose the side edges of the part 26 are formed with vertical, parallel side flanges 31 which are received in recesses 31 in the sides 19 of the tray proper, see Figs. 2, 3 and 13.
The follower or movable stop member is preferably releasably connected to the movable end wall member. In the embodiment shown, this is accomplished by forming the upright end wall with a bentover flange 32, thereby providing substantially a chan nel 33. The follower is provided with one or more flanges 34 which are adapted to engage in the channel of the front wall member to connect these parts together. The follower is preferably provided adjacent its card or reoordengagin portion with a pair of side tongues or projections 35. These projections areadapted to engage beneath the flanges of the sides of the tray in order to guide the follower in its sliding movements on the tray.
lVith the movable end wall and follower of this invention, the follower may be readily actuated to engage or release the cards from the outside of the cabinet by moving the end wall. At the same time, this construction does away with the necessity of a separate follower block and means for retaining said follower block in fixed position when in engagement with the cards, and also the necessity of a front apron, or the like, to protect the cards from the operating parts of the follower.
