AObjects of this invention are toV provide an electric switch adapted for connection to a movable portion of a mechanism such for example as one of the operating `levers of an automobile, and which is so constructed that ,it will close an electric circ-uit such as theA stoplight circuit at the earlyportion of theinovement of such member, and which will permit a further movement of v, the switch mechanism without interrupting the circuit thus permitting unhindered operation of the lever of the automobile and maintaining the circuit closed during the entire operation of such lever.
Further objects are to provide an electric switch which is of extremely cheap and strong construction, which may be applied to the automobile as a unit, which is fully enclosed, and whichis admirably adapted for the purpose outlined above.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the switch looking into the interior of the compartment with the cover plate removed.
Figure 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
The switch comprises a main housing 1 provided with outwardly projecting curved end flanges 2. A cover plate 3 is provided with an upstanding marginal flange 4f, as shown in Figure 2, and with integral grommets 5. These grommets are passed through apertures formed in the flange or feet 2 of the main casing l and are spun over, as shown in Figure 2, thus securely retaining the parts and providing a closed construction for the switch at the same time providing apertures for the reception of attaching means.
Within the main casing 1 a transverse rock shaft 6 is positioned and rigidly carries an external operating lever 7, such lever being provided with apertures 8 either one of which is adapted to receive the connecting member 9 extending to the operating pedal. The ends of the shaft 6 are upset, as indicated at 10, to definitely position the shaft and prevent its slipping sidewise from the casing. A pair of stops 11 are secured to one side of the casing and are adapted to limit the motion of the operating lever 7 The central portion of the shaft 6 is eX- truded or pressed outwardly to form a cross-shaped section 12. An outer insulating block 19 is positioned on the outer side of the casing 1 and internally threaded thimbles 2O are passed through the feet and through the blocks, the ends of the thimbles being spun over A or flanged to retain the blocks and contact members securely in position.
Spring contact clips 21 are positioned at the outer ends of the thimbles 20 and are held in place and adapted to be closed by means of screws 22, such contact clips being adapted to receive and clamp the rconductors thereto.
lt is to be noted from Figure 1 that the outer bloc-lr 19v is provided with a central web 23 against which the sides of the terminal clips are adapted to bear to thus prevent rocking of such clips and also to form an insulating wall between the clips to prevent inadvertent contact or short circuitino of the conductors when they are positioned within the terminal clips.
lt is to be noted that a slight play is allowed the operating pedal, such for example as the bra-ke pedal without closing the curcuit. However, when the pedal is applied its initial motion closes the circuit by passing the rivet 14: between the spring contact stationary members 15.. These members readily spring apart and scrape against the rivet 14. Further motion of the brake pedal or other operating pedal is permitted without opening this circuit as the rivet 14 may rock inwardly a material dista-nce and still remin in Contact with the fingers 15.
It will thus be seen that an electric switch has been provided which is eminently suited for automobile work, as described in detail above, which is of simple and strong construction, Which is completely closed7 which may be readily attached and very simply manufactured.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied kand is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
An electric switch comprising a metallic Casing having a main member provided With side and .end walls and with outwardly extending flanges at its ends, a cover plate having upstruek flanges surrounding the outwardly extending `flanges and having integral grommets passing through the out- Wardly projecting flanges and secured thereto, a transverse bar extending through the side walls of the main member and having an operating lever on its outer ends, said bar having outwardly swaged portions intermediate its end, said savaged portions loeing forced through an apertured insulating lever, a rivetpassing through the end of said insulating lever,an insulating block carried Within said easing and secured thereto, and having a pair ot' spring lingers adapted for positioning on opposite sides of said insulating lever, said spring fingers having outwardly turned ends adapted to receive between them the heads of said rivet.
