Description

AQDeGARlS.
Apparatus fur Feeding Fowls.
N0 `|5*9,649 Patented Feb.'9,1875.
llll n UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ALFRED DE GARIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR FEEDING FOWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 159,649, dated February 9, 1875; application filed October 29, 1874. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED DE GARIs, of the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus for Feeding Fowls, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide for an apparatus by aid of Which all kinds of fowls, such as chickens, pigeons, geese, turkeys, &c., may be fed systematically, and thus fattened in a shorter time, and at less expense and trouble, than in the ordinary wayoffceding them by hand.
My invention consists in theconstruction of a suitable cylinder, into which the food is placed in a liquefied state, and by aid of a weighted or loaded pist-on pressed into a flexible tube, provided with a suitable mouthpiece, which is introduced into the throatopening of the fowl. The piston is connected by a chain or rope to a counting or registering apparatus. In descending, the piston causes an axle to revolve, and thus indicates on amarked dial the quantity of food discharged. The apparatus vis placed on a suitable stand, and with legs connected to a platform, which is provided with Wheels, and travels on rails laid in the room Where the fowl-coops are placed.
By means of this apparatus a large number of fowls may be fed in a very short time and with very little trouble, and they can be fattened in a shorter period and with less food than in the ordinary manner. In large establishments the piston maybe operated by steam, compressed air, or any other desired motive power. y
ln order to describe my invention more fully, I refer to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
Figure I is a front sectional elevation of an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. II is a side view of the same.
A is the cylinder; B, the piston; O, the exible tube, with month-piece cl connected at c to the bottom of the cylinder. f is the chain, connected to the piston at g, and carried over the axle or drum h, which is placed over the top of the cylinder and held there by suitable supports, as shown. On one end of thisI drum is placed a hand, j, which indicates on the dial K the quantity of food distributed to cach fowl. To the bottom of the piston is attached a connecting-rod, l, which operates through a stuffing-box in the lower end of the cylinder. A weight, m, is hung to the lower end of this rod, serving to give to the piston the downward motion. By aid of crank n and gearwheel o, meshing into gear-wheel lo at the end of the drum h, the piston is elevated and held over the top of the cylinder while the same is being iilled with food by aid of the pawl q. R is the stand or table, in the center of which the cylinder is placed. S is the platform, connected by legs t t to the table R. U U are wheels attached to the axles V V. W W are the rails on which the apparatus is moved.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claiml. The cylinder A, weighted and suspended piston B, and tube O, arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The cylinder A, piston B, tube C, and registering device K, as and for the purpose set forth.
ALFRED DE GARIS.
