CUSHION Application filed-December This invention-relates to rock drills,'but moreparticularly to a cushion handle for that type of rock drill which is supported and guided by the'operator. I
One object. ofthe invention is to prevent the transmission of excessive shocks and vibration tothe guiding handlesof the rock drill. V
. Other objectswill be vin part obvious and inpartpointed out hereinafter. 5 The invention consists of the combinations of elements, features of construction and arrangement of parts having the general mode of operation substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly pointed. out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which V Figure 1 isa side view in elevation partly in section of. a portion? of a rock drill equipped with a cushion handle constructed in accordance with the practice of the invention,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1 partly in section, and V Figure 3 is a perspective view of the re silient supports.
Referring to the drawings, the invention is shown embodied in a hand held type rock drill in which a back head A, a cylinder B, a front cylinder washer C and a front head D are held in operative position by means of side bolts E. The side bolts E are arranged on opposite sides of the rock drill and preferably exterior thereof to engage various lugged portions of the parts comprisingthe drill'casing, such as the back head, the cylinder and the front head, for holding said casing-parts against relative rotation.
Pressure fluid may be supplied to the rock drill through a suitable connection F and its admission to the rock drill is controlled by a suitable throttle valve (not shown) having a controlling lever G. Secured to the cylinder B as by means of screws H is a valve chest J wherein may be arranged a suitable valve (not shown), for distributing the pressure fluid to the cylinder B. In this instance a back head plug K is shown screwed in the rearward end of the back head A for holding in a well known manner a cleansing fluid conducting tube (not shown).
In accordance with the present invention, a pair of supports designated generally by L are in this instance formed of single HANDLE. 1

have off-set curved" resilient portions R which terminate at their free'ends in loops S. -Apertures-'T formed by the loopsS are adapted to receive a bolt. U comprisinga part of a handle V whereby the rock drill may be manipulated. The bolt ,U may beof a length to extend well on either side of the supports L so that grip portions W,ipre fer-, ably of rubber, may be arranged slidably thereoninA similar grip portion X is in this instance arranged on the bolt U between the supports L and serves as a spacer for holding the curved portions 'R of the supports L against relative movement on the bolt f In orderto provide flat surfaces for the endsof the sleeves W and the spacer X adjacent the loops S of the supports L, suitable washersY are arranged on the bolt U. The washers Y in this instance are cupped as at Z to conform to the shape of the loops S and have recesses 11 to cooperate with the curved portions R of the supports L for holding said washers against rotation. One end of the bolt U' is in this instance screw threaded as at 0 to receive a suitable nut d whereby the parts comprising the handle may be firmly clamped in position.
Suitable means are provided for preventing rotation of the side bolts To this end washers e are arranged between. the loops 0 of the supports L and heads f of the side bolts E. The washers are provided with upwardly extending projections 9 having flat sides 71. which in this instance cooperate with flat faces formed on the heads f of the said bolts E. The washers 6 like the washers Y are also cupped as at Z to receive the loops 0 and are provided with recesses Z) into which one side of the straight portions Q may extend for preventing relative rotation between the sup-ports L and the washers e. v
Although the supports L are in this instance shown as being formed of single pieces of wire and then bent in the manner hereinbefore described for supporting the handle W yieldably with respect to the rock drill, it is to be understood that said supports may be formed of flat stock if deill) sired, or of any other suitable material possessing the property of resiliency.
This invention has been found to function an nnusually ellicient manner. The trans nis shocks and vibration resin the -d rill to the Operator Will be greatlj 11']lIllIl1lZ6l, dIlCl in consequence the drilling ethciency of a tool thus equipped Will be considerably increased.
By arranging the handle in a plane oil-set froin the longitudinal axis of the rock drill, ready access for adjustment and inspection may at all times be had to the back'head plug K and its associated parts.
1. Ina cushioning device for rock drills, the co1nbination or a back head, a handle for the back head, resilient supports mounted on opposite sides of the back'head to yieldablysup port the handle in a lane Olf-St from the longit'udinal axis of the back head, said resilient supports having straight portions to seat on the back head and curved resilient portions, loops at the ends of the curved portions for the insertion of the handle, and side bolts inserted through the ends of the straight port-ions for securing the resilient supports to the back head.
2. In a cushioning device for rock drills, the combination of aback head, a handle for the back headfresilient supports back headfand means-for preventing relative rotative movement between-the resilient supports and the side bolts.
3. In a cushioning-device for rock drills,
the combination of aback head, a handle-tor the back head, supports mounted: on o posite sides of the back head to yieldab y hold the handle, said resilient supports having straight portions to seat on theback head andoft-set resilient curvedportions, loops formed on the ended the curved portions for the reception of the handle, side bolts inserted through the ends of the straight portions for securing the supports to the back head and washers cooperating withthe sidebolts and the snpportstor holding said supports and thieside bolts against relative rbtativeiriovement,
In testimony whereot I have" signed this specification. i
