APPARATUS FOR COATING THE INTERNAL WALL OF PRESERVE BOXES OR TINS WITH METAL FOIL OR ZPAPER.
- Application filed January 14, 1925, Serial No. 2,437, and in Franceil'anuary 21, 1924.
The present invention relates to. an apparatus forcoating the interior of preserve boxes or tins with aluminium or other metal foil or paper in order to preventall contact between the contents or preserves and the metal of the said box.
The said apparatus essentially comprises an expanding envelop whose normal di ameter is somewhat smaller than the internal diameter of the box, and a mandrel or expanding device of a mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic nature, controlled by hand, which will apply the said expanding envelop against the inner wall of'the box with great force, so that the metal foil which is interposed between the said envelop andthebox will adhere to the said internal wall in a permanent manner.
In one embodimentof the invention, the
expanding device consists essentially of a pneumatic pump with a metal cylinder or barrel which is. surrounded by an indiarubber .tube with which it communicates through suitable apertures in its wall, the whole device being disposed within the extensible envelop.
In a second embodiment, the expanding device consists of a cylindrical structure comprising a plurality of segments which are connected together by hinges and can be applied with greater or less force against the expanding envelop within which the said structure is disposed.
In one form of construction, the ex anding envelop is composed of a sheet of indiarubber which is strengthened with overlapping edges, the same being disposed within a sheath of thin indiarubber.

Fig. 6 shows the said sheath in the expanded state.
As shown in Fig. 1, the said apparatus is engaged in the box 1 and it applies the metal foil or paper against the inner wall of the said box; the extensible envelop 3 is maintained by the indiarubber rings 4 upon the mandrel or expanding device. This latter consists essentially of a pneumatic pump 14 which is apertured at the top at 17and is provided with a knob 15 for hand con- (ml; the said rod traverses the pump cover 16 and fits upon a hollow rod 15 and having the coaxial position and secured to the bot-- tom of the pump 11, said hollow rod com municating with the box bottom of the holes 12. When the piston 13 is lowered by hand by means of the said lunch, the air thus compressed will pass-through the holes 6 and will accumulate between the pump cylinder 5 and the indiarubber tube 7; the latter thus expands and applies the said extensible envelop against the box.
The air confined within the said box is discharged at the bottom part and passes through the holes 12 and 17, and the compresslon of the metal foil 2 by the extensible envelop 3 becomes more and more energetic, until the said foil is finally made to adhere to the bottom of the box; it will then suflice to raise the said piston in order that the envelop 3 will contract and resume its original diameter, so that the apparatus can be removed from the box without interfering with the metal foil.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the extensible device consists of a metallic structure which comprises five members 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 which are attached together in suitable places by the hinges 23, 24, 25, 26. The members or segments 18 and 22 are not hinged together, and in the space between the two is inserted acam 27 pivoted upon a shaft 28 which is rotatable in a bearing 29 (secured to the segment 20) and traverses the tube 30 which is secured to the cover of the apparatus. A rod I l-proat the vided with the knob 15 is connected with iElie zsaid shaft by a rod and link mechanism 2. When the said knob is pressed upon, the said shaft will rotate, thus actuating the cam, which latter will separate the segments 18 and 22, thus expanding the extensible envelop 3. The thickness of the said envelop should be somewhat greater than in the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, and it should be made of a softer material in order that it may be slightly flattened under the pressure which is exercised, so that the metal foil will properly adhere to the surface in spite of any roughness of the surface of the wall.
Figs. 4 and 5 represent a constructional form of the extensible sheath 3 and of the pneumatic mandrel serving for extension purposes. The said sheath consists of an indiarubber sheet 3 which has a canvas or optionally a cardboard backing, said sheet beingformed into a cylinder with the slightly overlapping edges 34, 35. The said cylinder is surrounded by a sheath 3-6 consisting of a thin indiarubber tube which may be secured for instance by cementing the same at 37, according to a generatrix of the cylinder, upon the sheet 3.
When the sheet 3 is caused to expand, the
outer tube 36-will also expand, and this expansion will take place almost exclusively part occupied by the band 36, Figs.
6 and so that the said expanding sheath will maintain a continuous periphery in all cases. If the sheet of foil or paper 2 1s laced around the said sheath, Figs. 6 and so that the overlapping edges of the foil are disposed against the band 36*, when the expansion takes place, the sheath 3, 36 will change its shape and will be opened to some extent according to the change of shape or the displacement of the cylinder of metal foil 2, which latter will open and will thus enter into contact with the walls of the box. In this manner, the sheet 2 will be well applied against the wall of the box without formation of folds. y
The said expandin sheath may consist simply of an indi'arubia r cylinder strengthened with canvas or otherwise, whereof a band com'prised between two generatrices will not be sostrengthened. The said band will serve the same purpose as the band 36' above mentioned.
What I claim is:
1. An apparatus for coating the internal wall of boxes with metal foil or paper, comprisin a cylinder, a sheath of extensible material surrounding the said cylinder,
means for securing the upper and lower edges of said sheath to the cylinder, an extensible envelop surrounding the said sheath, and means for supplying a fluid between said cylinder and the said sheath in order to expand the said envelop.
2. An apparatus for coating the internal wall of boxes with metal foil or paper, comprising a cylinder forming a pump barrel, a sheath of extensible material surrounding the said cylinder and secured thereto at its upper and lower edges, holes formed in the wall of said cylinder, a piston adapted to supply air between the cylinder and the said sheath, and an extensible envelop surrounding the said sheath.
. 3. -An apparatus for coating the internal wall of boxes with metal foil or paper, comprising a sheet of canvas covered rubber which is formed into "a roll with slightly overlapping edges, 2. thin rubber tube surrounding the said roll of canvas covered rubber, and means for expanding the said rubber-tube or extensible sheath.
4. An apparatus for coating the internal wall of boxes with metal foil or paper, comprising an air-pump barrel, a rubber sheath securedto the upper and lower edges ofspecification.
