PATENT Grrrcn.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ILLUMINATED SIGNS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,596, dated February 9, 1875; application iiled January 27, 1875.
4 To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERICK M CLEWEE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Illuminated Letter, of which the following is a speci- Iication:
Figure 1 is a face View, partly in section, of Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; and Fig. 3, a horizontal section thereof on the line c c, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
rEhis invention has for its object to produce an illuminated letter, which can at night be seen from opposite sides, and to the interior of which access may be conveniently had for lighting and extinguishing the gas, cleaning, and other purposes.
The invention consists in providing a letter, which is composed of glass or other translucent crystals or pieces, that are fastened to a wire frame, With doors or gates in one edge, to give access to the interior.
In the drawing, the letter A represents the Wire frame ot' my illuminated letter, said frame having the form of a letter or other suitable form, and being made to inclose a space Within which the gas-pipe B, or other illuminating apparatus, may be inserted. The pipe B carries within the frame A a suitable number of burners, a a. The opposite faces of the wire frame are closed by, and to the same are fastcrystals or pieces O C of glass or other translucent material. These pieces may be so arranged as to show the same letter on both faces, or different letters or characters on the opposite faces of the frame A. One edge of the frame A may also be closed by crystals C, but the other edge is closed by a sheetmetal plate, D, which has openings cut into it, and one or more gates, b b, pivoted or hinged thereto, so that each gate may serve to close one of Said openings, and so that by opening a gate access may be gained to the interior. buitable catches may be used for closing the gates.
One or more letters may be formed by the crystals 011 one or both faces ot' the frame A.
This frame may be suspended so that its opposite faces can be seen from opposite ends of a street, and the letters read at night when the burners auf, are lighted, and also at daytime, when the gas is extinguished.
1 claim as my invention- A11 illuminated letter, composed of the. wireframe A, plate D, gate or gates b, and translucent crystals or pieces C C, substantially as herein shown and speciiied.
FREDERICK MCLEWEE.
