Description
lUNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
CHARLES LINDNER, OF HOCKLEY, TEXAS.
lmpnovl-:MENT IN SAW-MILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,589, dated February 9, 1875; application filed September 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES LINDNER, of Hockley, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented an Improvement in SawlVIills, of which the following is a specification The invention will rst be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved gear. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line a9 x of Fig. 1; and Fig. i is a detail section taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the saw-arbor, on which is a cone-wheel, B. C is the shaft for feeding the carriage forward. It has a cone-Wheel, D, which is the mate to B. E is the intermediate frictionwheel for transmitting the motion from B to friction-wheel on the shaft C for turning the wheel K on the shaft, which gears with the carriage. L is the Wheel on the saw-arbor, and M is the intermediate wheel for running the carriage back. This wheel is mounted on the lever N, which is pivoted at O to a fixed pivot, so as to have a little end motion, and it is connected at the other end by a link, P, to the lever Q, in which the shaft C is journaled, and which is so pivoted at It, that whenever said lever is shifted to gear the feed, it throws out the running-back gear, and when it is shifted so as to gear the running-back train, it throws out the feed.
I ain aware that a shifting-lever, combined with a pitman and toggle, to work the forward and backward driving-pulleys of carriage, has been employed 5 but t What I claim is- The combination, with a wheel, M, that gears with a wheel, L, on the saw-shaft, of the lever N, slotted and pivoted on fixed pin O, and the link-connected lever Q that forms a bearing for the shaft C, and is pivoted at R, all substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
A CHARLES LINDNER.
