' Compound for .Picture-Frames,
N 0,159,5 55 Patentedremnay.
i U al i UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
CHARLES D. WILSON AND EDSON GERRY, OF ELMWOOD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOUNDS FOR PICTURE-FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,555, dated February 9, 1875; application filed l November 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Bc it known that we, CEAS. D. WILsoN and EDSON GERRY, of the town of Elmwood, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in compounds to be applied in the manufacture of picture-frames and other articles; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings which form a part of this ,speciiicatioln The nature of our invent-ion consists in a compound, of which straw pulp forms a component part, for the manufacture of lookingglass and picture frames, toys, moldings, and cornices, vessels of any description, or any article for which it may be found applicable, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings represent a pictureframe made of our compound.
The main ingredient of our compound is straw pulp, which is mixed with the following, viz.: One-half ounce gum-shellac, quantity of alcohol to cut the gum, one-half ounce of glue, reduced to athin solution, one-half pint molasses, one-halt' or one pint glycerine, quantity ofammoniacal solution of copper to make the pulp moist.
When the pulp is thoroughly moistened or saturated with the required liquid, it is molded or otherwise formed in the desired shape, and, when dry, it is perfectly hard, and will not be affected by dampness or heat so as to Warp or crack.
Articles to be used in and about water should have the shellac applied to the surface.
Articles made of straw pulp in this manner are impervious to water, and difcult to break 5 hence, this compound is a good substitute for wood, iron, and clay in many instances.
Having thus fully described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The .compound described for frames, moldings, &c., consisting of straw pulp mixed with gum-shellac, alcohol, glue, molasses, glycerine, and a solution of copper in about the proportions substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own invention we affix oursignatures in presence of two witnesses.
C. D. WILSON. EDSON GERRY. Witnesses:
