I' ATENT JAMES N. BUCHANAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-SPRINKLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,498, dated February 9, 1875; application tiled November 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES N. BUCHANAN, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Street-Sprinklers, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel is a top or plan view; Fig. 2, a rear View, with a portion ot' the perforated plate removed; and Figs. 3 and 4., cross-sections.
The object ot' my invention is to arrange the head ot' a street-sprinkler so that a greater or less quantity of water can be thrown, as may be desired; and its nature consists in dividing the sprinkler-head into two or more longitudinal compartments or sections.
In the drawings, A represents the sprinklerhead 5 B C, the pipes or tubes for connecting the sprinkler with lthe tank; D, the upper compartment or section 5 E, the lower compartment or section; F, the horizontal partitionplate; a b, the openings for cleaning.
I usually make the sprinkler-head in the ordinary segmental form, as shown; but it may be made in any other suitable form, one side having the usual perforated plate, and the other lconnected with the supplypipes, as shown.
The horizontal plate F may be located so as to divide the sprinkler-head either into equal or unequal compartments, each of which may have one or more supply-pipes. In the form shown the pipe B supplies the lower compartment, E, and the pipes C the upper compartment, D. I have shown three pipes; but it is obvious that the head may be operated with two of these pipes. These pipes are connected with a tank, which has separate valves for each of them, or for those passing to each compartment, so that one or both may be cut oi' by the driver, if desired.
It is obvious that more than two compartments may be used;` but two, as shown, will be found practically all that will be required. By ina-king these compartments of unequal capacity three grades of sprinkling may be performed by the same head-that is, by the lighter' or heavier one, and by both combined.
In sprinkling streets it usually happens that foot-crossings require lighter sprinkling than the other parts; and it is also desirable that the street should be sprinkled lighter than usual when the sprinkling is to be followed by a street-cleaner. I obtain all of these advantages and a full control of the sprinkling by dividing the sprinkling-head into two or more longitudinal compartments, as described.
What I claim as new is as follows:
A street-sprinkler divided into two or more compartments formed by horizontal plates or partitions, in combination with a sutljcient number of supply-pipes, whereby one or more ofthe compartments may be used as described, and for the purpose specified.
