Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGEo PENROSE W. BROWNBAGK, OF LIMERIGK, PENNSYLVANIA.
4IMPROVEMENT IN MOWlNGjNIACHlNES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,496, dated February 9, 1875; application filed September 12, 1874.
- thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical sectional view of my mowing-machine. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the saine.
This invention relates to mowing-machines, and especially to those parts of such machines which communicate reciprocating motion to the sickle. The novelty of my invention consists in adapting the well-known lever-escapement to the accomplishment of the object named, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a draft-frame, which is mounted on the axle C of two transporting-Wheels, B B. D designates a pallet-Wheel,whicl1 is keyed on the axle C, with which wheel the escapement-lever E engages. The lever E is pivoted at a to a pendant, A', and to this lever a rod, F, is rigidly secured. Gr designates a horizontal rod, which is jointed to the lower end of rod F, and also to the longest arm of an angular lever, L. Lever L has its fulcrum on a stirrup, J, depending from the frame A, and the short arm of this lever is connected bya short rod, r', to` the sickle H. The linger-bar is hinged to the stirrup J and a pendant, J, which latter has a ground-Wheel, g, applied to its lower end. rEhe outer end of the ngerbar is supported by a wheel, g', in the usual manner, and this bar can be turned up in a vertical position by means of a hand-lever, K, and a rope or chain, c.
It will be seen from the above description that a very rapid motion will be transmitted to the sickle when the machine is drawn along.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a mowing-machine, the wheel D on axle C, in combination with lever E, rods F G, lever L, rod r, and sickle H, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
PENROSE W. BROW'NBACK.
