Description

NITED STATES Price.
EDMUND WALTERS, OF TAMAQUA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO HENRY WALTERS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN RELIEF-VALVES FOR CVLINDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,483, dated February 2, 1875; applica-tion filed January 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND WALTERS, of Tamaqua, in theV county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Relief-Valves for Cylinders 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and useit, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in relief-valves for cylinders; and consists in the arrangement and combination of devices that will be more fully described hereafter, whereby the Water in the cylinders can be ejected at each stroke of the piston.-
The accompanying drawing represents my invention. a represents an ordinary. shell, provided With a screw-thread, b, upon its inner end, by means of which the cock is secured to the cylinder-head. Passing through this shell is the valve-rod c, which has the valve d upon its innerend, to close that end of the shell,-
of the stem is passed the coiled spring t', which bears against the collar, and the collar against the enlargement of the stem, which holds the valve open, when not closed by the pressure of the steam.
Passing through the screw-cap pis a screw, o, which passes through the spring and can be made to bear upon the end ot' the stem, so as to hold it open against any pressure, and thus allow the steam a chance to blow through and clean the valve.
The operation is as follows: A valve having been placed in each end of the cylinder, as soon as the steam is admitted into one end the valve instantly closes and remains closed until the piston has made its stroke, when the exhaust is opened, and the pressure of steam being removed, the force of the spring instantly opens the valve, when the condensed steam runs out through the shell and escapes at b.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the shell a, valvestem c d e, collar g, spring z', cap p, and regulatingscrew 0, substantially as shown.
2. The screw o, in combination with the valve-stem, whereby the valve can be kept open for the steam to blow through, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of December, 1874.
EDMUND WALTERS. Witnesses:
