This invention relates to a hack saw frame and the principal objects thereof are to simplify the construction and reduce the number of parts.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a side view of a. hack saw with the frame constructed in accordance with this invention; and
Figs. 2, 3 and 1 are cross sections taken respectively along the lines 2-2, 33, and 44 of Fig. 1.
The frame comprises a flat metallic handle piece 10 having a pair of non-metallic handle grips 11 secured on the opposite sides of the handle piece by screws 12. This handle piece has an opening 13 for the fingers and the hand grips co-incide at their forward edges with the outline of this opening which is of a general elliptical shape. I
Pivoted to the handle piece 10 at the extreme rear thereof on av pivot 14 is a U- shaped member 15 enclosing the top of the member 10 and having a space above it for receiving a telescoping section 16 constituting the rest of the frame. This member 15 has a stud 17 across it at a point below the level of the bottom of the section 16. The
' handle member 10 has an integral projection 18 at its upper forward corner. The section 16 has a series of notches 19 in the bottom, any one of which is adapted to receive the projection 18 to hold this section of the frame in adjusted position.
The front end of the section 16 extends downwardly and has an integral loop 20 forreceiving a screw 21 having a pin 22 for receiving the saw blade 23 and a thumb nut 24 for tightening it up. The other end of the blade is held in the usual way at the bottom of the handle piece 10.
It will be seen that when the parts are in operative position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 the tightening up of the blade holds the frame section 16 down so that one of its notches 19 receives a projection 18 and it binds at the rear end against the inside upper surface of the U-shaped, member 15. This holds the parts firmly in position.
VFhen it is desired to adjust the frame, the
blade is loosened and the section 16 elevated, as shownin dotted lines, to release one of its notches from the projection 18 and permit of adjustment back and forth.
This is an extremelysimple construction involving very few parts and the whole handle end of it is in one piece not capable of getting out of position or adjustment. The U-shaped member is comparatively short? and has no irregularities requiring expense in manufacture or assembling.
It will be seen also that the Ushaped member 15, on account of having no obstruction to the entrance of the telescoping section 16 except the stud 17 will receive this member freely and without any special care whenever it is tipped up materially above the operative position. Therefore these parts will not bind together.
Although I have illustrated and described only a single form of the invention I am aware of the fact that modifications. can. be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the; scope ofthe invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown. and described, butlVhat I do claim is a 1. In a hack saw frame, the combination of a flat metallic handle piece provided with an integral project-ion at its forward end and a fixed pivot at its rear end, both at the top, with a. member ivoted on said pivot covering the top of tiie handle piece and extending above the handle piece throughout its length to provide a longitudinal space, and a telescoping section in said space and having notches along its edge to receive said projection and hold it in adjusted positions.
2. In a hack saw frame, the combination with a solid metallic handle piece, of a U- shaped member pivoted to said handle piece near the top of it, to provide a longitudinal space along its upper edge, and a telescoping section adapted to fill said space and to be adjusted longitudinally along the same.
3. In a hack saw, the combination with a handle piece having near the bottom fixed means for connecting it with a saw blade and provided with an integral projection near the top at the front end, a telescoping frame section adjustable along the extreme top of the handle piece and having notches for receiving said projection to hold the telescoping section in adjusted posit-ion, means pivoted on the handle member for receiving said telescoping section and holding it against the edge of said handle piece at the extreme rear of the top, and adjustable means on the outer end of the telescoping section for receiving the hack saw blade and tightening it so that the tightening of the blade itself will hold the telescoping section against. the top surface of the handle piece and prevent its getting out of adjusted position.
4. In a hack saw, the combination with a handle member having near the bottom, means for connecting it with a saw blade,
a U-shaped frame member pivoted to the top of the handle piece, a telescoping section cooperating with the pivoted member to constitute a frame, and means on the outer end of the telescoping section for receiving the hack saw blade and tightening it so that the tightening of the blade itself will hold the telescoping section against the handle piece.
