BASKET CARRIER.
Application filed January 28, 1922. Serial No. 582,389.
This invention has for its object to rovide a portable support or carrier for askets such as used for marketing purposes. There is a growing tendency among people today, in marketing for the family, to carry home goods and articles in baskets. This is due largely to the fact that the carry home idea is being introduced largely as a means of reducing the cost of living, products being sold more cheaply by stores and markets when delivery service is dispensed with. A
vast amount of people deal with chain stores for the above reason and having in view the foregoing conditions the aim of this invenion has been to produce a mobile support or carrying device readily adapted to be engaged with and secured to a basket to facilitate the hand transportation of the latter by relieving the one carrying the basket from the weight of the load of the contents of the receptacle.
In the devising of my improved carrier several advantages have been had in view especially, including the provision of a device of exceedingly simple form so that it may be cheaply manufactured. Again, my aim has been to provide a device which is collapsible, which is readily applied to the basket, and being very light, may be carried in collapsed condition when the basket is empty. When, however, the basket is filed with commodities and ready to be conveyed home, or elsewhere as the case may be, my carrier is unfolded and adjusted so that it virtually forms a light, movable, wheeled support, sufliciently strong to support the weight of the basket and its contents, and adapted to be pulled along by the user with the basket mounted in supported relation thereon.
With the above and other objects in view an understanding of my invention will be had upon reference to the following description, in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a basket carrier embodying the essential features of my invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of the carrier.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of one of the wheels, which, however, may be made of different constructions.
Figure 4 is an end view in a modified form of basket supporting and attaching means.
Figure 5 is a side view of the modification of Figure 4, the link being broken away.
Referring to the drawings it will be observed that my carrier embodies a lazy tong construction, the body A being composed of an upper pair of levers 1 pivotally connected together at 2 and a lower pair of levers 3 pivotally connected together at 4. At their lower ends the levers 1 are connected with the upper ends of the levers 3, as shown at 5. At its lower end, one of the levers 3 is bifurcated as shown at 6, and the spaced members 7 thus formedare provided with openings through which an axle 8 passes, said axle 8 carying rollers or wheels 9 in an obvious manner. The other one of the levers 3 is provided at its lower end with a rpllfi' or wheel 10 swivelly connected thereto a One of the levers 1 is pivotally connected at 12 with the end of a link 13, and this link is slotted as shown at 14, to receive a fastening and adjusting device 15 in the form of a bolt having a wing nut screw thereon. It will be evident that by suitablywadjusting the fastening means at 15 the body A of the carrier may be set up in the position of Figure 1, or collapsed so as to occupy a minimum amount of space, after the manner of use of ordinary lazy tong constructions.
Upon the link 13 I rovide basket supporting means comprising horizontal supporting members 16 which are equi ped with suitable means whereby to secure the carrier device to the basket. The said securing means may comprise a pair of spring clamps 17 for each one of the basket supporting members 16, superposed thereon, and adjustably held in place by keepers 18 equipped with set screws 19. The spring clamps 17 95 are separately adjustable, and are adapted to yieldingly engage the opposite sides of the basket in order to hold the latter in proper position upon the carrier device.
I show in Figures 4 and 5 a modified form 100 of means for connectin the carrier device with the basket. In th1s instance the horizontal supporting members are designated 20 and are equipped at their ends with straps 21 adapte to be buckled over the 105 basket and thus form a very simple and secure means of holding the basket properly attached to the carrier device.
My invention is so desi ned that it may be practically entirely ma e of sheet metal 110 stampings and is therefore susceptible of being cheaply manufactured, something which I consider requisite to an article of this class,
'for under these conditions it maybe sold at a very low cost to the. producer, and therefore disposed of in large numbers. It is not thought that a further description of the operation of the invention is necessary owing to its simplicity, of the method of manipulation of the parts.
Fibre washers 22 may be interposed between the head of the bolt, and the wing nut of the adjusting device 15, and the portions of the link 13 and basket supporting members 16 through which the bolt passes. The backet supporting members 16 are provided with extensions 16 on their under sides through which the bolt of the adjusting device 16 passes, said bolt of course also passing through the slot 14.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. As a new article ofmanufacture, a basket carrying device comprising a body consisting of a single lazy tong structure, comprising a plurality of pivotally connected levers, wheels connected with the lower ends of the lowermost levers to operate upon the ground, an adjustable link connecting the upper ends of the uppermost levers to vary the elevation of the device, a securing device for said link, and basket supporting members carried by the link.
- 2. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the basket supporting members roject in opposite directions from the link so that and the obviousness they will support a basket in balanced position upon the link and lazy tong body structure, and basket attaching means adjustably amounted upon said basket supporting memers.
3. A basket carrying device comprising a body consisting of a lazy .tong construction including a series of pivotally connected levers,'a longitudinal adjustable connection between the upper ends of the uppermost levers, wheels connected with the lower ends of the lowermost levers, basket carrying means mounted upon the adjustable connecting means between the uppermost levers and including supporting members projecting in opposite directions from the adjustable connecting means, and adjustable clamps sliding upon said supporting members for attachin said members thereto, so that the basket Wlll be balanced upon the supporting members.
4. A portable and collapsible lug age carrier including an upright collapsib e frame including a lower single lever and a lower bifurcated lever, supporting rollers at the lower end of the frame including a single roller swiveled to the said lower single lever and two spaced rollers carried by the bifurcated parts of the other lever, luggage engaging and positionin means at the upper end of the frame, an means comprising a slotted link extending between the movable upper end of the frame for holdin the frame in distended and operative posit on.
