IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FSR COILING HOQPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,29, dated February 2, 1875; application tiled July 17, 1874.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known' that I, JAMES ToMLrNsoN, of Goderich, in the county of Huron and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Goilin g Hoops, of which the followin gis a specication:
The object of my invention is to coil barrelhoops into compact rolls after steaming to render them pliable; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan of my improved machine Fig. 2, a front elevation, Fig. 3, a vertical section of Fig. l; Fig. 4, a diagram, showing the device for discharging. or throwing oft' the completed coil from the forming-wheel.
A represents the frame in which is mounted a shaft, B, carrying the forming-wheel C at one end. The coil is formed on this wheel by winding thereon as the wheel revolves, being placed one on the top of another for the purpose. The hoops have to be previously steamed to wind well. D is a iiexible metallic strap or band attached at one end to the pivoted arm E, and at the other to a weighted lever, F, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2. By this means the main portion of the formingwheel is enveloped by the strap, leaving only an open throat or passage, a., at the top,
through which the splints are fed to be coiled.
The lever F has a longitudinal slot, b, at its rea-r end, through which passes the pivot c', and at a suitable position it has a cord or` chain, d, which passes upward over pulleys f f, and has attached to the opposite end a' weight, g. The object of this arrangement is' to allow the enlargement ot' the strap as the hoops are fed in one over another, as before described. As the coil enlarges the strap is pressed down so as to increase in its distance from the wheel, and this action is allowed by the lever, which depresses and also moves endwise under the action. At the same time the weight will draw up on the lever, and serve to keep the metallic strap in constant contact with the coil, which is essential to make it close and tight. The pivoted arm E has also an important action in allowing a free movement of the strap in various positions, so as to make it bear at all points on the coil. These several features for holding and allowing the-winding` of the coil, constitute important parts of my'invention.
In front of the forming-wheel is a face-plate, G, and in the rear a corresponding fixed ring, H, said parts boxing or inclosing the space around the circumference of the wheel, to keep the hoops in place one ou top of another, as they are coiled.
The face-plate G is made to move out and in, to allow the discharge of the finished coils, as follows: On the rear of the frame A rests a cross-bar, I, which slides back and forth freely. Rods h h connect this cross-bar with the lugs t' c' of the face-plate, said rods having suitable bearings in the frame, to insure their running properly. Spiral springs 7c 7c are placed upon the rods, or some equivalent arrangement is employed, whereby the faceplate is drawn back, as before described, to rest close to the forming-wheel. In the frame is mounted a cross-shaft, K, upon which", at opposite ends, are mountedpulleys LL, cords or chains l l, winding on the pulleys LL, connect with cross-bar I, and `one of these cords, after passing around its pulley, extends down and is attached to a foot-treadle, M. By operating this treadle it will be seen that the cross-bar I, and consequently the face-plate G, will be thrown out. The bar I is provided with two projecting rods, N N,- whose distance apart is a little greater than the diameter of the forming-wheel so that when thrown forward by the movement of the bar, before described, they will strike the sides of the coil each side of the wheel, and thus throw it olf from the wheel, to allow the forming of a new coil. Thus it will be seen the movement of the face-plate away from the forming-wheel, and the forcing of the nished coil from its place, are simultaneous. From the formingwheel the coil drops into an inclined trough, P, and rolls oft' out of the way. The action of the rods N is most clearly illustrated in Fig. 4.
On the back side of the forming-wheel is pivoted a clamp, Q, as shown in Fig. 3. One end, m, is made to extend over the face ofthe isms@ wheel, While the other, n, passes through a slot made in the wheel, and projects in front so as to come in contact with the face-plate, which presses back against it, as shown at n. The object of this arrangement is to clamp and hold the first end of the first hoop in starting the coil. This end is inserted under the hook m, when the back action of the faces plate will cause it to be clamped down upon the face of the Wheel. The next hoop is then applied under the end of that one Wou nd, and Wound up till the Whole coil is complete.

When the coil has been fully Wound the Wheel is turned to bring the last end of the last hoop under pin lo, which is then clamped down upon it by pressing ou treadle S. rlhis is for the purpose of holding the end of the hoop While a nail is driven through the same for binding to the coil.
The object of thus coiling hoopsis to get them in compact form for transportation and storage, and also to bind them into the approximate 'orm for use on barrels, which curved form they always retain after being once steamed and bent.
l. In a machine for coiling hoops, the combination of a forming-Wheel, C, encircling band or strap D, pivoted arm E, and the Weighted le- Ver F, arranged and operating substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine for coiling hoops, the movable faoe-plate G, pivoted clamp Q, lever R, and pin 19, in combination with the forming- Wheel C, encircling band or strap D, pivoted slotted arm E, and weighted lever F, all arranged and operating substantially as de scribed.
