bricant dispensing apparatus is usually placed with, the outlet end of its conduit in direct contact with the inlet face of the nipple, and so retained by either manual pressure, or a mechanical lock, to provide a leak-proof joint while lubricant under pressure is expressed therethrou-gh. Nipples are generally formed integrally of brass or steel, and the application of the dispensing apparatus thereto often causes the oint forming portion of the nipple surface to be marred, so that it will not maintain a leakproof joint. Such a condition often arises from other causes, as the nipple is ordinarily exposed, andathe face thereof is subject to blows and bumps from various causes, such as careless use of tools in working on the associated parts. It is especially desirable that the contact forming face of the n1pple maintain its original contour, and espea cially so, when the joint formed between the nipple and the lubricant dispensing apparatus isa metal-to-metal contact as illustrated in Patent No. 1, 17 5,980 issued December 4,1923. 1 v Among the objects and advantages of the 85 invention may be enumerated the provision of a hardened tip portion of simple shape without interfering with the durability or ease of operation of the inside check valve.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds.
In the drawings illustrating an embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lubricant receiving nipple: Flgare 2 is a vertical medial sectional view of the nipple; Figure 3 is an end view looking at the bottom of the nipple; and Figure 4 1s a side elevation of the hardened inlet portion of the nipple removed from the nipple body.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference the nipple proper consists of a main body portion or receptacle 10 formed of brass or steel, and a hardened metal 1nlet portion 11. i
The outlet end of the reservoir is p1efor-' ably threaded externally as at '12 and a hexagonal flange 13 is provided so that the nipple can be screwed into and out of operative position with a bearing to be lubricated.- The other end of the nipple body terminates in a cylindrical neck portion 14: which tapers toward the end.
The neck portion 14 is provided with a central longitudinally extending passage 15 which is in alignment and communicates with a larger passage 16 which extends longitudinally through the body providing an open outlet end. A ball valve 17 seats against the annular shoulder-l8 formed by the junction of the passages 15 and 16, and is normally so maintained by one end of a spiral spring 19 engaging therewith. The opposite end of the spring is secured within the passage 16 by inturned lugs 27 broached from the wall of the passage.
The inlet portion of the nipple is formed with a cylindrical end 21, which forms a continuation of the cylindrical tapered neck of the receptacle, and a cylindrical shank 22 which fits into the, passage 15 in the neck of the receptacle. The hardened inlet end of the nipple can be secured with the main receptacle portion in various ways, but I .prefer to form the shank 22 so that it can be pressed into the passage 15 to secure the sections together. The outer end ofthe inlet 1 member is provided with a circular peripheral edge 23, and a passage 24 extends longitudinally through the member. The passages 15, 16 and 24 providing a direct passage through the nipple when lubricant is being injected therein.
The circular edge 23 is adapted to provide a contact face for establishing a metal to metal leak proof joint with the dispensing end of a lubricating dispensing apparatus of the type shown in the patent referred to above. I do not limit my invention to this type of nipple or contact, as I. am aware that the end of the nipple can be engaged in various other ways to provide a leak proof joint.
It will be noted that the shank 22 is materially shorter than the small bore portion in which it lies, to leave clearance for the .ball 17. Thus, the ball is seated at 18 on a relatively soft seat of large diameter with the attendant-advantages as to opening the valve under relatively low pressure differ ences, and tightness and long' life for the valve seat.
What I claim is: v
1. A lubricating fitting comprising a main body portion having a bore shouldered intermediate its ends, a check valve seated on said shoulder, and a hardened tip portion set in the smaller bore and terminating short of the inner end thereof to leave clear ance for said valve.
2. A lubricant fitting comprising a body having a bore therethrough, said body comprising a hardened tlp portion of minimum bore, an intermediate portion of intermediate bore and relatively soft material, and
an end portion of maximum bore, and a ball check valve seated onthe soft shoulder between said intermediate and end portions.
