4.Application led February 19, 1921. Serial'Nc. 446,469. i
This invention relates to improvements in vanes for rota-ry pumps or rotary engines. The object of the invention is to provide an improved4 vaneA withl yielding means interposed within the same whereby the vane will be held seated against the adjacent part to form and maintain a tight joint.
Objects which pertain'to Adetails of construction and operation will deiinitelv appear from the detailed .description td fol-I low. y
I accomplish the object of my invention by the devices and vmeans described in the following specification. -v The invention is,- clearly defined and pointed out inthe claims.
line 2-2 -of Fig. I, the wane only .being l0 shown. l Y
Fig. III is a detail transverse sectional `view online corresponding to line 3 3 of Fig. I, showing the relation of myimproved vane to the cylinder and 'the piston walls i5 o fsuch. a pump. -Q
In. the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the, direction ofthe little arrows at the ends ofthe section linesand similar numerals of reference refer to simi- 0 lar 'parts throughout the several views.
Considering the numbered parts of tle' drawing, my improved vane lis made up of opposed synnetrical plate-like -halves 2,. 3. The half-3 has a bar 5 secured'to the mar- 5 gin thereof by suitable rivetsand the half 2 is cut away to correspond lto the same, and the half 2 has the bar 4 riveted to its op site symmetrical margin, the half 3 being cut away to accommodate the same, so that the two halves of the vane are capablel of expansion in facial contact the one with the other in the plane of the vane. Semi-cylindrical cavity 7 is formed in the half 3 and opposed to thesame in the half 2 is a cor- ;wardly projecting lugs -maintain'ed'by the lugs 9 and 10en responding semi-cylindrical cavity 6. i, `"I/hese are disposed centrally but slightly at one IIICHIGAN.
l:sis
side ofthe center, so that whenV the halves are brou register, t ere being a greater distance from the .block or bar securedto the edge than from the opposite edge.' The spring 8 .is disposed in these recesses and the plates con? stituting the vane i ht together these partsdo not are pushed outwardlyin Ithe plane of the vanainto yie ding4 contacti i on opposite sides with the cylinder .headsf At the inner nd of the'half` 3 are; out 9, 9,.and preciselyV corresponding lugs 10, 10, are onythe said half 2. In practice the outer'endl of the vane 1 contacts with the inner surface of, the pump cylinder 1,1, andthe outwardly`I projecting lugs 9 and :10 engage the cylinder heads 12 and 13 in the slots 14 and15're-l spectively (see 'Fi I). transverse to the p ane of the said vanetoY derwall. Y r
The vane 1 is disposed 'in a recess 17: in a radial wall 18 within the piston 16, the. radial wall 18 beingcounterbalancedat 19: (see Fig. III). -A flat surface20 is pro-` vided in the cylinder 11 for contactwithr These slots Safe 'i maintain the same in contact withthe cylin the -outer end of the vane 1. Contactis. f
ga 'ing' within the transverse slots 14 .and 15 a'ovey described. However, where the pump re-` volves, as appears in my concurrent patent'.
application, .centrifugal'force will hold :the
- vane in contact with the'inner wall of the cylinder and the lugs may be omitted.'`
I have not described the connections or ports to the pump in this behalf, as this invention pertains particularly. to the vane.
I have merely described vit in this @mec-f tionso that it may be readily understood what is accomplished in this particular structure. The lugs 9 and 10-are'of great lconsequence in certain structures, but the parts may be maintained in contact by centrifugal vforce. In a rotary pump where the enti-re parts revolve at high speed these --lugs may be dispensed with.
Having thus escribed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A vane for a rotary pump or engine comprising a pair of plates slidably overlapping -each other in transverse planes, and
lois
means for relatively ymoving said plates in the direction of the' line of intersection of said planes..
2. A vaneffor a rotary ump or engine comprising a-par of plates aving a slidable n sealing engagement with each other in trans# l is versc planes, the adjacent faces of said plates being'recesscd, and a spring Vlocated in said recess for relatively'movin lthe direction of the line o intersection ci*y fsaidlanes.. 'f
said plates iii n a rotary pump hinatio'n-'with eccentrically revoluble cylinder and piston, of a vane for lbridging the s ace between said cylinder .and piston` slid.`
. a le in a recess inone of said members, said l and means Vfor relativel in the direction -of the'line of intersection ofl said of the piston, of a vane locate 4iii the slotin said piston and comprising a pair of' plates lslidably loverlap ing eachA otherainfplanes lanes= having.
o f the slot in. which it -isxlocated a pair 1 of plates slidably vane comprisin other in transverse planes,
overlapping eac planea y. n a' rotary pum bination with .a radially d va cylinder in veccentric relation thereto-hav'- ing parallel cheek plates at ,o posits 'ends transverse to eac other said l h their line of intersection para-l el tothe axis of said piston, an'dmeans for resiliently relatively moving said plat/esl parallel to lthe axis ofthe iston to 'maintain sealing contact with said cheek'plates.
5. In a rotary pump or' engine,.the e'omf bination with'an eccentrically revolublepiston and cylinder, of afvane bridging the` s ace between saidpistonV and cylinder .andI
" recess in one yof said,
sidable injaradi Q members, and meansfor maintaining sealing contact between said vane and the coin-A ace` between said plementar walls for .the s with the walls piston an cylinder and -a tricall revolub e in fixed an or engine, the com moving said plates slotted l piston fand and the contactin a spring located in said recesses for 6. In a rotary pump or engine, the combi-- Iiston and Aa cylinder eccenlar relation to eac other, of a vane radia ly slidable in a slot in one of said members and bridging the space between the same and the other of said members, the unslotted member having a portion of its'wall' perpendicular to the nationI with a plane of said vane in sliding contact with the edge of the vane, said vane comprising a pair of members slidablyoverlapping each other in transverse planes having their' line of intersection parallel to the axes of said cylinder and piston, resilient means for relatively moving said plates in the direction of' intersection of said planes to maintain the of said cylinder.v l
7 In a rotary pump or cylinder, the-combination with a cylinder and piston eccentrically revoluble at the same angular speed,
' saine in'sealing. contact with the side walls vofa vane radially slidable in a slot in one v of vsaid members and brid ing the space be# tween said member and t e other member, the unslotted member having a portion .of -its wall .perpendicular to the plane of said vane in sliding contact with the edge of the. vanev said vane comprising a pair of plates 'slidably overlapping each other in transverse 'planes having their line of intersection paring provided wit -cylindeig'and means for also maintaining the t-ransverseedge of said plate in sealing contact with the surface over which it slides.
v In witness whereof I have hereuntoset my hand. i
