This invention relates to air pumps for use principally in connection with motors.
The object of the invention is to convert one or more of the cylinders of an internal combustion engine into an air pump, and utilize the remaining cylinders as a power unit to operate the said air producing cylinder or cylinders, for the purpose of inflating pneumatic tires, actuating pneumatic tools, and to operate on a lifting jack byair pressures.
The method of employing the cylinder is part of the invention, together with the method of cutting out the cylinder (i. e.
preventing flow of petrol gas into the engine cylinder on its induction stroke, and converting the exhaust stroke of the piston to obtain air pressure by preventing air escapement through the exhaust valve) in combi nation with the means employed in acco1nplishing the cutting out process.
In dilferent types of engines, different means will be employed; as for example, an engine where the cylinders are supplied with fuel through one induction outlet controlled by overhead valves will have different ap paratus (for the cutting out process) to the under type of valve having the same class of induction pipe. An individual outlet in duction pipe with overhead valve mechanism may have different cutting out means to either of the first mentioned types. Where the valve plug has been dispensed with, a different design to any of the above varieties will be employed.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a unit used in conjunction with valves of the under operated type; or the unit may be made to include the valve plug in the new manufacture if or when necessity arises;-for example, if the diameter of the plug aperture is not sufficient to permit the entry of the converting unit, then it may be found neces sary to increase the size of the said plug; 1 these circumstances a new valve plug would be included, but for the purpose of this invention it is assumed that the converting unit will pass through the valve plug aperture, and the drawings represent such a unit,

for usein forming a duct for air communication between air pumps and tires; and be tween air pumps and lifting acks; the stud fitting 15 preferably in the form of a compression cock, having a tapered plug valve 3 with operating means 3 passing through the body part 4 of the fitting. The fitting is screw threaded at 5, of preferably stand ard sparking plug size. There is an inter-- mediate part 6, which is screw threaded at 6 to register with the thread 5 of the fitting. The said intermediate part 6 is preferably in two pieces, the lower part 6 provides a valve hood 6 adapted to cover the head of the valve'l'.
There is an apertured stem 6 extending upwards from thevalve hood 6 fitted with a jam nut 8. The said stem 6 is screw threaded at G to register with an internal screw thread in the upper part S of the intermediate part 6. There is a suitable washer 9 engaging the upper surface of the jam nut 25 and the lower face of the upper part 6 of the intermediate part 6. When the two parts 6 and 6* are screwed together through the registering of the said screw thread 6 there should be a sufficient distance bet-weenthe face 9 of the washer 9 and the face 10 of the valve plug 10 so that the hood 6 will be lifted'clear of the valve 7 to have a suitable range of adjustment to put the cylinder out of actlon as a power unit when it is required as an air unit, and yet open sufii ciently to enable the cylinder to operate as an internal combustion engine unit.
The valve plug 10 is of the usual type, threaded at 1O to register with the screw threaded part of the cylinder, andis pro' vided with a shoulder 10 and washer 10 to form a joint with the face of the said. cylinder as in the manner of the well known type of valve plug.
' The adjustment of the intermediate part 6 is exercised from the upper end on turning an extension 6 a portion of the extension 6 may be of hexagon shape to take an ordinary spanner, or castellated to take a cotter spanner. There is a washer 11, used to form a tight joint when'the unit is adjusted to cut ofi the supply of petrol gas and'convert the cylinder into an air pump. V
Referring again to Figure 2, which as beforestated shows the converting unit out of action; when the unit is-in operation to direct air pressurethrough'the apertures 6,
the intermediate part 6 of the unit is screwed downwards until the hood 6 covers the valve 7 as in the mannerillustrated in Figure 1.
The valve hood 6 on adjusting the intermediate part 6, covers'the valve 7; a flex 2 is adjusted to the fitting on the inter-' mediate part 6. During the suction stroke of the piston in the converted cylinder, air 1s admitted through suitable inlet valve 4',
and upon the compression stroke and/or compression and exhaust strokes, the air is forced (by the medium of apertures 6 in cover said valve and prevent the passage of gas through the passageway, a hollow plug connected to the hood and communicating 'with the combustion chamber of the cylinder, a conduit connected to said plug and 7 provided with an air inlet valve and an air outlet pipe, and a piston arranged in the cylinder for drawing air into the cylinder through the air inlet valve and for forcing the same out through said plug, conduit and pipe.
2. The combination with an internal combustion engine cylinder and piston, of a gas passageway communicating with the combustion chamber of the cylinder, a valve controlling the movement of gas through said passageway, a hood in the combustion cham- 'ber arranged to obstruct said passageway and prevent the passage of gas through the latter even though said valve is open, means to permit axial movement of said hood, a hollow plug connected to the hood and communicating with the combustion chamber, a conduit connected to the plug and provided with an air inlet valve, and a pipe connected to said conduit for discharging air from the cylinder. w v
3. An air pump attachment for an internal combustion engine having avalve ineluding a' hollow plug provided with means for attaching the same to an engine cylinder, a hood arranged at one end of said plug and adapted to enclose the face of said valve,
- said plug being provided with slots to permit its interior to communicate with the combustion chamber of a cylinder, said plug being provided at one end'with a threaded aperture of a size to receive an ordinary spark plug, a second plug having a screwthreaded extension adapted to engage the threads of said aperture,a conduit connected to the second plug and provided with an air inlet valve, and a'pipe connected to the conduit for discharging air from the latter.
4. In combination, an internal combustion engine cylinder having a gas passageway controlled by an axially movable valve, a piston in the cylinder, an axially movable hollow plug,,coaxial with the axis of the valve and having its interior communicating with the combustion chamber of the cylinder, a hood at one end of said plug arranged to enclose the inner face of. the valve head and to obstruct the gas passagewa said plug being provided with a threaded aperture of a sizesuitable to receive an ordinary spark plug, a conduit having a threaded extension projecting into said aperture and engaging the threads of the latter, an air inlet valve for the conduit, and a pipe connected to the conduit and arranged to discharge air from the latter. 5. In combination, an internal combustion engine cylinder provided with a gas passageway having a control valve, an adjustable hollow fitting extending into the combustionchamber of the cylinder for cutting off the gas passageway from the combustion chamber and covering said valve, and a valved conduit connected to said fitting to convert the internal combustion engine cylinder into an air pump.
6. An air pump device for use with internal combustion engines including a ring provided withinternal and external screwthreads and with upper and lower shoulders,
a hollow plug provided with internal and external threads, the latter being adapted to engage the internal threads of the ring, an outwardly extending flange at the upper end ofthe plug extending over said upper shoulder, a packing ring between the last mentioned shoulder and flange, a second packing ring arranged intermediate the ends of said plug and being adapted to engage the lower shoulder ofv the threaded ring, said plug being axially movable in the threaded ring, a hood arranged at the lower end of the plug to cover the valve of an internal combustion engine, said plug being providedwith slots to permit its interior to communicate with the combustion chamber of an engine, a-conduit having a threaded extension engaging the internal threads of theplug, an air inlet valve for said conduit, and a discharge pipe connected to the conduit. f
