My invention r 'ATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL JOSEPH LEMATTRE, OF ABBEVILLE, FRANCE.
elates to an apparatus for the hydraulic unloading of beets from cars carrying the same,
into the trench which is situate along the railwaytrack.
In a known process a stream of water under pressure from a hose is used by the workmen to expel the beets from the car into the side trench, but this method has many drawbacks and requires a complicated mechanism.
In my invention,
use is made of a main water pipe disposed above the track at a much higher level than the platform of the car, and in this manner a water is caused great quantity of to descend, without pressure, upon the beets, whereby the car can be rapidly cleared age to the beets.
out and without any dam- Obviously, the water pipe is provided with suitable valves for the flooding or for stopping the water, and alsowith suitable branch conduits of large size upon which the valve can be opened in each case in order to various cars.
The invention supply the water to the relates to an apparatus which is so constructed and disposed that a single person can operate it so as to send the water successively upon all the different parts of for a car of great length,
the surface of the car,
and even and in this manner the device is very rapidly operated. The invention consists essentially in the use of a large shape, inclined reference to a di tube which has preferably a tapered of suitable length; said tube can be by an irreversible mechanism with so revoluble on a vertical axis about the conduit of the main water tube.
The appended drawing shows by way of of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top view of the apparatus.
A neck 1 of large diameter is connected the inte through shown, with the main raised water pipe,
valve, not
rmediary of a and it replaces or forms the head of the usual conduit. The sai firmly attached thereto,
eting, a sleeve 2 serves as a support the revoluble disc d large diameter neck has for exampleby rivwith wide flange 3 which and as a roller path for L; the rolling balls 4' are preferably interposed between the members 3 and 4 so as to of said disc on th facilitate the rotation e vertical axis of the neck.
23', Serial No. 615,289, and in France February 4, 1922.
The said disc has secured thereto a sheet metal feeding conduit or water jet tube 5 which has preferably a tapered shape, this being suspended from the disc 4i on the axis X'Y; on one side, for example, the .said conduit is suspended by a pin or shaft 6 attached to a flange on said disc and extending through a hole in the upper part of said conduit. On the other side a shaft 7 rotates in two bearings 8 and 8' secured to the disc 4, and the upper part 5 of the conduit 5 is keyed to the shaft 7 so as to rotate together with the latter.
On the shaft 7 is mounted a worm wheel 9 actuated by a worm 10 which is journaled in bearings 11 secured to revoluble disc 4L, said worm being controlled by the hand wheel 12. In this manner, by turning the said hand wheel, the worm wheel 9 will turn through a certain angle, thus causing the conduit 5 to take an inclined position as shown in the dotted lines, Fig. 1. The shaft 13 is given a suitable length between the hand wheel and the worm, and thus the workman stationed upon an operating latform surrounding the water discharge tube is enabled to perform the following operations with facility; flrstly, he controls the valve for opening and closing the water supply, secondly, he can push the hand wheel to one side, using the shaft 13 as a lever, and is thus enabled to turn the conduit 5 about the vertical axis by reason of the ball bearing arrangement, thirdly, by turning the said worm he may incline the feed conduit so as to send the water stream to the ends of the car, and even when inclined, the said conduit will not bring any weight upon the operator owing to the irreversible control obtained by the worm gearing, and the Workman can thus leave the feed conduit in the inclined position for the whole time necessary to clear out the end of the car.
It is ascertained that a device of this kind can be used by a single operator to discharge some 2000 tons of beets per day.
Claims:
1. An apparatus for the hydrauiic unloading of material from vehicles into a lateral storage space, comprising a substantially vertical and stationary Water inlet branch, a horizontal support turning coaxially about said inlet branch, a water jet tube the upper part whereof is mounted upon said support and is spaced from and oscillates, about said inlet: branch, whereby the Water jet tube may oscillate about a horizontal axis passing through said inlet branch and in any position: receive the wa ter escaping freely from the inlet branch,
andco-mmon means tooscillatesaid waterjet tube about a horizontal, axis and to r0- tate same about a vertical axis.
2. An apparatus, of the character described adapted. for connection to. a. raised Water supply, said apparatus comprising a Water inlet branch having a supporting member seeurecl thereabout, an intermediate memleer, carried by said supporting member for retative; mewement, said intermediate member having flanges thereon, a water jet tube having flanges thereon, pivot pins passing tlirenglm recesses respeetiwely in flanges of the intermediate member and Water jet tube, whereby to secure said water jet tube to the intermediate member, and means [carried by said intermediate member toincline the Water jet tube, with respect to the horizontal and hold it in any one of its inclined positions.
In testimony whereof I aflix 11'1y signature. 1
